I just caught the tail end of Marc Stein on Sportscenter, but he was saying that talks on the three way (I'm pretty sure) were furious for the last 24 hours but are now "pretty much dead". He still thinks Dallas has the inside edge to land Kidd because he supposedly wants to go there, and as such these talks could be resurrected, but for now... Looks like it's off. Did anyone catch the long explanation?

Kidd is better for Dallas than Harris because their time is now, and Kidd is still a superstar, one of the top players in the game.
Harris would be great for Portland because he's good, younger than Kidd, and because he's the second best player in the transaction... Portland moves quantity for quality. Plus in the competitive West, Portland can't rest on "nice run," or "nice season" - hell, tonight, Portland is out of the playoffs!
New Jersey just needs to get out from some salary (Kidd makes $21 mil next season!) and get young guys, picks, and cap breathing room while the getting is still good, because they're going nowhere this season.

I don't have a problem with the Blazers trading for Harris, or sending Kidd to the Mavs, but the package would have to be DRAMATICALLY different.
The MAX I'd offer is:
Raef Lafrentz
Darius Miles
Some combination of:
Jarrett Jack
Draft pick
Martell or Travis
Bottom line, Miles would have to be included. I just don't see a huge need for Harris.

OK, here's my final attempt at making this rumor legit...
.
Portland Trades:
Darius Miles
Jarrett Jack
Martell Webster
Portland Receives:
Jerry Stackhouse
Jamal Magloire
The Blazers give up Martell, but they gain a taller version of Jarrett, and dump Miles.
Dallas Trades:
Jerry Stackhouse
Jason Terry
Eric Dampier
Dallas Receives:
Jason Kidd
Darius Miles
If the Mavs want Kidd, they have to take Miles
NJ Trades:
Jason Kidd
Jamal Magloire
NJ Receives:
Martell Webster
Jarrett Jack
Jason Terry
Eric Dampier
The Nets get an infusion of talent to hopefully improve their chances to win now, but also get some talent to build with. Terry should be able to stretch the D, opening things for Vince and RJ. Dampier gives them a legit starting center. Jack could fill the same role he plays for the Blazers, offense off the bench. And Martell give's them a potential star. Webster also allows them to try to move either RJ or Vince in an additional deal.
The Blazers projected line-up in the future:
PG: Blake/Sergio/Green
SG: Roy/Stackhouse/Rudy*
SF: Outlaw/Jones/Stackhouse
PF: LMA/Frye/Outlaw/
C: Joel/Magloire/Oden*
Portland Trades:

I'm just not a fan of Harris. His game doesn't compliment Roy's IMO. Yes, he may be a good defender, but his offense is pretty much limited to slashing, and short jumpers. That will not help pull the defenders off of Oden, and it will duplicate Roy and Rudy too much. I can honestly say I'd rather have the cap savings than Harris.
In addition, Stackhouse's stats are almost identical to Jacks, in almost identical minutes. And Magloire helps with rebounding off the bench. The other major advantage to this deal is that if allows Nate to keep Pryz on the floor at the end of the game. Typically, Nate pulls Pryz and plays LMA at center, so that Travis can play PF. If Martell is moved, the Blazers can play Travis at the SF, and keep him on the floor with Joel and LMA at the same time.
Like it or not, the Blazers are going to have to choose between Travis and Martell at some point, I just don't see any way around it.

Well, the Blazers would have a lot of leverage if they were the ones to facilitate bringing in Kidd. This might be the best chance that I've seen to convince another team to take Miles.

Harris is shooting 35% this year from threes ... not great not bad ... but it is noteworthy that he has drastically improved every year in that category
Nate plays travis at PF because that is where he is most effective ... if you put him at SF he loses the quickness advantage that he uses to get good looks
And I disagree entirely. I think eventually Pritchard will have to decide between either Channing or Travis and between either Jones or Webster

I think its fair
Dallas gets - Kidd, Wright, Armstrong
Portland gets - Harris, Bass
New Jersey gets - Frye, Webster, Jack, Stackhouse, cap space
Its fun to play with rumors

If Pritchard actually chooses Webster over Outlaw, I'll be shocked. Webster has a lot of potential, but his role is diminishing right now. Just imagine when Rudy comes over next season. He should choose Outlaw over Webster. If I had to guess, this could stretch out a few days in case Pritchard tries to offer McRoberts or rights to guys like Peterri Koponen or Freeland along with Webster instead of Outlaw. Otherwise, I can't see this deal going down until Harris is healthy.

I would do that trade, but I have never been a big fan of Webster. Only guy I would even be somewhat sad to see go would be Channing, hes done so much better recently and truly wants to be here. Oh well I could live with loosing him if we got Harris and Bass in return.
Return to Portland Trail Blazers
