This is my question. Health, skills, whatever the drawbacks are, this is a huge red flag to me.

Don't worry, Portland has the best medical staff in the league for big men.

The best medical staff is the one that never works. Unfortunately, our staff is experienced.

He put up good bench player stats on the Kings. The problem with him excelling in that squad though is there just isn't enough shots to go around. Fox, Bogdan, Barnes, Heild, Bagley. So many young folks too it isn't really surprising Giles took a backseat. In addition to that, Vlade seemed to decline his option before last year even began (https://www.sactownroyalty.com/2019/11/6/20952045/im-still-baffled-by-sacramento-kings-decision-to-decline-harry-giles-option) They pretty much screwed any future with Giles before he started playing well, why give him minutes at that point?

That isn't to say he will find better luck gettings shots in with the Blazers, but theres a good chance he is further along in development than his stats say.

He really isn't much of a shooter though. Anything deeper than 15 feet is pretty suspect for him. His passing skills seem really good but the rest of his skillset is sub-par and he clearly no longer has the athleticism to compensate and doesn't seem have much of a motor or bbiq

We have a lot to learn about Giles. We know he is big and talented, but we don't know why Kings dumped him. Kings have 3 good players at his position ahead of him. Was it a case of a good player not getting a chance, or something else.

He will have a chance here, especially while Collins is out. Perhaps, he chose Portland because Blazers have no PF a head of him. He has at least 1 month on a good NBA team that has only centers, SF's, and him as the only real PF.

Kings dumped him because he hasn't panned out. He's G-League or Meyers level.

I'd have been happy if Olshey brought Skal back. Giles needs to do better to win me over.

Skal needs to impress someone who has a checkbook. AFAIK, nobody has signed Skal.

The in vs out on the Blazers this offseason has been pretty impressive.

Divac was high on him

Heat gave Meyers more than we are paying to DJJ. They didn't make an offer to DJJ.

Apparently, Luke Walton wanted to keep him.

Meyers is a great regular season floor space and culture guy. He got paid that amount because he is a huge, huge plus for that team in terms of character and culture. Its also a 1 year deal basically and they had money to spend.

They didnt offer DJJ because their wing rotation is stacked. At SG/SF they have Herro, Butler, Iggy, Robinson with Nunn, Dragic and Bradley all having the ability to play SG (And Nunn / Bradley arguably being more SG than PG).

Even w/o injury, Giles has serious limitations. He hasnt developed his shot since HS and he has lost a ton of athleticism. Also seemed to have poor body language whenever he got minutes last season. Still clearly worth a shot, and I wouldnt be surprised if he beats out Zach if both are healthy. But there is a reason he was on the barging bin, just as much as there was a reason we scooped him up.

Another Divac favorite. Walton is there for maybe just this season.

Giles reminds me of Elden Campbell. Body type, movement. Definitely see him as a center at this point.

Giles showed up for camp last year out of shape. Hopefully he knows that that does not go well in PDX. Per Windhorst, the issue with DJJ in Miami was that they were only offering one year contracts clearing space to go after Giannis next year.

I think the answer to your question, is within the actual question. He has game, just limited mobility which shouldn't be an issue playing maybe 8-10 min a night. Great passer, and appears to have a solid BBIQ. I remember him getting signed to Duke years ago as a top H.S. player. Last years highlights:

It would be awesome if Giles is good enough to beat out Zach. That would mean Blazers will have 2 PF's due big contracts next season.

As to the bargain bin, Giles has a minimum contract, but it was his choice where he would play. His contract is a bargain because many teams would like to have him on the contract he has with Blazers. Compare this to RoCo who was waived by Rockets after his rookie season. Rockets didn't want RoCo at any price. Sixers signed RoCo to a 3-year unguaranteed minimum contract. The amount RoCo was paid was not a bargain, it was the minimum. It became a bargain after the fact, and I hope RoCo fired that agent. DJJ was waived in his second season with Suns prior to the date NBA guarantees all contracts. DJJ signed a 2-way contract with Heat. So, Giles might be a bargain, but his value has not sunk as low as the value of RoCo and DJJ value once was.

Come to think of it, except for his injuries, Giles would have been drafted ahead of Collins. Neither of them have been anything special. Collins has backup center skills expected to be a starting PF, Giles has 3d string PF skills with hopes of being a serviceable backup PF. Add to the PF mix a geriatric chucker who plays no defense. Maybe one of the three exceeds expectations. Right now you would have to pencil in RoCo as the starter at PF, so there aren't a lot of minutes for these guys to show anything.
