So 9? year old me mowed the lawn and washed the dishes. And he gave me $1. Which was $29 less than the youth camp entrance fee, so I was not in attendance.
I think I used the $1 to buy basketball trading cards. One of the cards was a story edition where Karl Malone explained that, one time while camping, a bear came into his camp ground and he punched it in the face. Seems questionable as an adult. Pretty sure I tried to trade it at school, but nobody had any interest. Unless I wanted something like an Anthony Peeler Lakers card, which had no back story about punching a bear in the face.
And that is how I did not meet former two time all-star Blazers great Kevin Duckworth. But sadly, his passing means that now that I have $30, I will never be able to attend a Kevin Duckworth basketball training camp. Which is extra sad as I would totally dominate a bunch of 9 year olds right now. Back then? Live or die by my high arcing jump shot.
No idea why anyone is reading this.

Duck lived across the street from William Walker grade school. He would just show up at the school regularly after he retired and worked with the kids. Very nice guy.

One of my favorite memories was the 1999 playoffs, specifically the WC Semis against Utah. The battle between Brian Grant and Karl Malone was a lot of fun to watch.

Not sure this counts. I had a dog that was in love with Wheels. She would lay in front of the radio anytime Wheels was on, no other time. RIP big guy.

As far as games. The 1990 game against the Spurs. The perfect quarter, Blazers scored a record 49 points in the first quarter.

Wasn’t that the series where Strickland the critical turnover?

Oh man, I remember that game...what a great team that was. Also, the days when Snapper was the color commentator.

No question, one of the most satisfying playoff victories in team history.

That was a great series!!! Didn't Grant end up with a broken nose from one of Malone's elbows? I remember Grant took one in the nose and he just stayed in there playing.

Yes, the infamous foul by Brian Grant's face on Malone's elbow.

zzaj wrote:PDXKnight, you just reminded me of a funny memory...

My wife and I had 100 level season tickets in the early aughts and were going to every game...in 2002 a fat Shawn Kemp was on the team and he was pretty much the laughing stock of the Arena.

At one point in some random game the Blazers were getting blown out and the Arena was VERY quiet. Kemp pulled up with about a 20 footer just below the top of the key on a fast break and it hit nothing but backboard--no rim whatsoever. In the silence of the arena a guy a couple rows down from me yelled at the top of his lungs, "NICE SHOT, DAD!"...and literally you could hear the whole Arena murmuring with laughter. LEGEND.

Was too young to truly remember what player it was, but Kemp seems as good as anyone. One of the players had multiple baby mamas. And they hated each other. So, usually there is an area where the family of the players sit together. And no idea the drama leading up to this, but the Blazers had to put two ex? lovers and their kids on completely opposite sides of the court for games in order to avoid a catfight, which I presume happened but did not witness.

Everyone bashes A.C. Green's virginity streak. But he probably got a good night's sleep every night.

Coach Cheeks walked over and began singing with her. The entire arena started singing with her. She ended up on the Tonight Show because of that.

Stotts is going to go down as one of the most underrated Blazers basketball coaches of all-time.

But, Cheeks always seemed like a cool dude. Not a great basketball coach, but a solid person. I think Billups will end up the same way. Not the best coach as far as actually coaching a professional basketball team, but a seemingly likeable enough guy.

That would have been nice to know 30 years ago. Could have met the great AND kept my $1. :D
