Nope.. they had to buy a bag of donuts. Break out some kneepads, and put on some chapstick.

In the grand scheme of things, guys like Skal don't really matter for his reputation of being made of glass
followed him from Sacramento. Not likely to excite Dame though...

There still could be trades that are done but not announced.

Skal was going to be RFA this summer. I'd also wonder how serious his knee injury is. When I hear Blazer-big + meniscus, I get nervous

it was a boring deadline for Portland but an entertaining one for the NBA. If anyone can detail what exactly Memphis did, I'd be interested. I think they made about 736 transactions

I think it's pretty clear that Olshey received some instructions from Seattle to start saving money where he could. A losing record makes things look a lot different than the feel-good moments from the later parts of last season. I really doubt there was any intention of paying tax next season and that likely shut down trade options for Whiteside

Olshey is risk-averse; we all know that. He's in his wheelhouse when he rooting around in the dusty corners of other teams' garages, but he totally avoids moving around in the man-caves inside the house where all the big-screen TV's are. The light from those big screens exposes risks and prevents ass-covering

the next step is the waive & buy-out market. And Portland has an empty roster slot now. I do wish it was Hezonja gone instead of Skal

Trey Bruke was waived, he would be an upgrade over Simons and if we want to make a push for the playoffs his ability to run the offense would be nice as Damian is leading the league in MPG.

We need a big and a true backup PG. We can only get one on the buyout / waive market. I assume big since NO doesn't like backup Point Guards.

I get that the Blazers were probably not going to keep Skal next season, since he was a RFA, and that he probably wasn't going to play any more this year. I get that it saves JA 4.7M in tax/salary.

What I don't understand is why the Blazers got another trade exemption that'll never be used. Seems like Olshey likes to stockpile those things.

Correction it saves $2.7M. Blazers paid $2M to offload him.

What was Skal's $2.7 million going to cost the Blazers in luxury taxes?

I believe his salary was $2.35 million, which would have cost that much again in luxury tax, so $4.7 million total. Spending the $2 million to ship him off saves the bottom line about $2.7 million.

Skal must be worse off injury wise than we thought. Like, out for the season and we didn't intend to resign this offseason worse.

Because moving him to save only 2.7M just doesn't make sense.

but likely 60-65% of his salary has already been paid. So Portland is only saving about 700-800K in salary and about 3.7M in tax
***********************************************************

there is also a thread in what happened today: Olshey traded for Varejao, waived him, and then stretched his remaining salary over 5 years. That's an annual 1.94M hit against the cap...and the tax. He did all that to get a 26th pick he used on Swanigan; then traded Swanigan for Skal; then paid 2M dollars to trade Skal. That's a string of bad decisions

I do think its indicative of how much management believes in this years teams chances if they make the
playoffs for the tax savings are peanuts and a top 55 second round pick that almost won't convey even
less so. I'd rather they had gotten donuts for the Blazers office.

I'd be interested to hear what everyone else thinks about the trades that mattered. I actually like the
Wiggins trade to GSW for Dlo was never going to be a fit with them and they now have a young SF to
and a top 3 pick next season to go with Klay, Dray and Steph. A number of teams got better but Portland
was not one of them.

I think Wiggins will be just as garbage for Golden State as he was for Minnesota. They should have lowered the draft pick asking price on DLo in exchange for Covington and Dieng IMO. I think they will regret the Wiggins move and he will turn into an outrageously expensive bench guy who looks like Hardaway Jr in his past years.

Wiggins is talented. The problem is he takes no responsibility for earning his pay. That's what you can expect from 80% of the population, but you want more in return from a guy earning $30M/year.

When announced, the Skal trade sure looks bad. It definitely had me scratching my head. But I'm going to assume a few things, to try and make some sense out of it:

1. I assume Skal's injury is season-ending, making him worthless to us this year.

2. I assume Olshey doesn't see a role for him beyond this year, and considering the price he may command with his RFA status, it's time to say good bye, because...

3. I assume Whiteside IS in Olshey's future plans, and Skal, who is too good and too expensive to just sit on the bench, will likely have trouble seeing the floor with a potential PF/C rotation of: Nurkic(32 mpg) / Collins(32 mpg) / Whiteside(32 mpg).

4. I assume that Olshey may now have his eye on the waiver wire, and a player that can contribute this year, and possibly beyond. Another Olshey, Diamond in the rough, to fill the open roster spot. Sounds like he has alot of exemptions that he could also maybe use.

All in all, the real action for us happened when we first got Melo, and more recently, Ariza. I'll feel better when I know that Biggie isn't going to get tons of minutes, and wait for Olshey to hopefully snatch another talented player off the wire. Til then, I'll just close saying, Get well soon Nurk and Z.

Don't get too excited people, but Olshey now has a 2nd round pick he can use. It may be getting used as I type this

I would much rather have Wiggins than Russell. For some reason I just do not like that guys game. Wiggins, get him out of Minnesota and put him on a winning team and I think he can be a positive player. Maybe he still doesn't live up to that contract but I think he can help the Warriors.

Sad to see Skal go if it doesn't get us out of the luxury tax. Perhaps he is more injured than I originally thought, but I actually liked him on the court with Whiteside, he can shoot from the high post and can be the secondary rim defender when Whiteside gets himself out of position. Kind of a poor mans Zach Collins. We are gonna need that sort of front-court depth if we make the 8th seed and have to face the Lakers and I think Skal would be more useful in that series than Swannigan.
