If there's good reason to believe Indy doesn't match this offer and Batum signs his offer sheet first, I say we opt for Hibbert. The chance of having a legit center is better than overpaying for a slightly above average SF.

I know Batum has said that he won't wait on the Blazers but is there any chance he waits a few minutes so that we can finish signing Hibbert if it won't impede on his plans? I find it hard to imagine Nic turns down a chance for his team to become better.

Wiz,

Are there any tricks available for Portland to do in the new CBA similar to what we've done in the past with Wesley and Milsap?

first off, I'm pretty sure that's not how this works

Portland made an offer. If Hibbert signs the offer sheet, Indiana has two options, match or don't match. If they don't match, Hibbert is a Blazer

secondly, when a player is willing to sign with another team, that team is not going to give up much to get the player for an extra year. Usually a 2nd round pick and a TPE is the norm, not giving up the 11th pick in the draft, a player who many think was a steal
We've made a verbal offer only. The binding offer can't be made until the 11th so there's plenty of time to make a deal with Hibbert and the Pacers.

While I'd rather not move Leonard either, if the choice is between not getting Hibbert or losing Leonard then the choice for me is clear.

If Hibbert signs his offer sheet first Blazers can sign Hibbert than match Batum. If Batum signs his offer sheet first than the Blazers will not have room to match Batum and sign Hibbert.

IIRC from the Wesley Matthews and Paul Millsap offers-heets, the time margin for signings is pretty broad. I think if both Hibbert and Batum sign offer sheets on July 11, the leagues considers them to have been signed at the same time, and the clock ends at 11:59 am, July 14 for both

in other words, the timekeeping is set by date. In order for one to be considered as having beens signed before the other, it would have to be on another day

but I'm not positive about that... :-?

you mean like making it a toxic contract?

Portland is offering a deal to an RFA, and a max deal to boot. So they can't front-load

they can offer a 10% signing bonus and make the Pacers pay that up front...like the day of signing. But that's somewhere in the 5.5 million range and i can't see that making the Pacers balk if they were ok with the deal as a standard deal

I am not gonna lie i am not super thrilled about giving Hibbert a Max offer BUT it's better then a Max too Batum or even Gordon with his injury issues.

I think the chances the Pacers match is 90% but i think it will take a day or 2 before we get a 100% clear indication if they will or not. The fact they did not give him a Max deal to start is headscratching but maybe unlike some teams they did not want to outbid themselves.

Well maybe IND was preparing to lose Hibbert when the drafted Plumlee. Seems possible.

if I'm reading the CBA right:

a max salary for Hibbert would be 12.92 million

the step raises would be 4.5% or about 582,000

so

12.922 million
13.504 million
14.086 million
14.668 million

that's about 55.2 million over 4 years. About 13.8 million a year

Now I know the number that's being reported is 58 million. But it may not be coincidence that you get to 58 million when you apply the 7.5% raises. But the Blazers can't offer 7.5% raises

Is it simply 4.5% from the original amount or is it 4.5% from that seasons salary? Not that it's a lot when you're talking these type of figures, but it would add just a little bit more to that price tag.

#Blazers GM Neil Olshey says team "engaged in negotiations with Roy Hibbert" & will "enter into an offer sheet when moratorium period ends."

So it depends on the Pacers if they will match or not.
Wesley Matthews just came by the scores table and said, "I ain't f***king losing no more."

4.5% of the starting salary. No raise of previous raise balance

I'm glad we went after Hibbert, I've been watching a lot of Pacers games for the last couple of years so I know him well. He will fit perfectly with Aldridge . Decent passer , good rebounder , and the most important thing, he is a BEAST patrolling the paint, that would give Aldridge more freedom to go out and contest shots , and play more help defense without having to worry about protecting the rim so much. That defense would be SCARY. His real value is clearly lower than the max, but trust me, I can't think about many more centers who fit this team and Aldridge better than Hibbert, both offensively and defensively

I don't think the pacers will let him go anyway

that's my take

and the 'scuttlebutt' is the Pacers were wanting to offer a starting salary of around 11 million. When to compare that to the Blazer offer after factoring in that the Pacers were offering 7.5% raises, the difference is only about 6 million over 4 years

There is also something else to consider on if Pacers match is does there owner want to pay the Lux tax plus other players who are Free Agents not just this year but next. I looked at that and this is what i found

This year besides Roy is George Hill and you have to think he will want more then the almost 4mill he got last season. I am thinking 7 to 9 million will be his final number when he finally signs.

Then Next year David West will be a FA and he will want a raise from his 10 million i am guessing after showing he is a Star again. Also Tyler Hansbrough will be a restricted Free Agent and that could cost the pacers alittle if they want to keep him. Also Collison but i think they might left him walk if they Pay Hill.

George Hill and David West are second in importance to Roy for Indy, make no mistake about it. He's their most valuable player imo and I think they match.
