I think you need to give 3 stars used to being the main man some time to gel. The only thing that matters is how they are playing at the end of the year.

As I said, they've been a disappointment thus far. Maybe they can still pull it together, but I seriously question Melo's fit there. That and I suspect Billy Donovan will be out of a job come 2018.

Melo's skill fits anywhere. The problem is fitting his big head. An army of asskissers can't sufficiently indulge him.

They really can't, but whatever floats your boat.

So to me, this season has been pretty disappointing. Lots of missed opportunities. No cohesion. Yet, at the 1/4 mark of the season Portland is in first place in the NW Division and would have home court in the first round if the playoffs started today.

(Yes, I know this has more to do with other teams, but still.)

We had one of the easyiest Schedule so far. For example look on the Schedule after the all Star Break. That's gonna be tough for the Blazers. I doubt we can hold the home court advantage over 82 games. But maybe 5 or 6

Mitchell will be the one that got away for at least 10 GM's...he shot up the draft boards for good reason. He's still pretty inconsistent, but he has that "it" factor that is very rare, and among rookies especially. Same with Kyle Kuzma.

Pretty much everybody knew Mitchell was going to be good, but it's really hard to evaluate whether or not guards will be able to transition to the NBA level.

Lots of folks thought Kuzma would turn out ok, but he was used totally differently at Utah and has surprised a lot of people with a ready-made NBA game.

Yeah, it's all hindsight. If you had a crystal ball you likely could have traded Lillard and a future pick to the Kings for #7 and #10 and drafted both Dennis Smith jr. and Donovan Mitchell, traded McCollum and #15 for Myles Turner, drafted OG Anunoby or Kuzma at #20, and also drafted Jordan Bell with #26 and done a really big rebuild. All those guys are producing as well as anyone on our roster.

Nobody knows at draft time how well a young prospect will turn out. You do your workouts and interviews and take it from there. Like zzaj mentions, lots of GM's missed out.

I remember having heated discussions on here about Chris Paul before he was drafted. There were a TON of question marks surrounding how he would fit in the NBA. Like you say, GM's just have to do the best they can...in some ways it's a crapshoot.

Yeah, Donovan Mitchell is a ton of fun to watch. Quickly becoming one of my favorite players in the league. His composure reminds me of a young Lillard and Roy. Great pick by the Jazz.

At least he's in some pretty good company and not with some scrubs. Even the great ones mess up.

The Blazers have lost 7 games this season by 4 points or less. Currently, if they'd have won those games they'd be tied w/Houston for 2nd place in the West. If they would have split those games (3-4) they'd be in 4th place in the West.

Crazy, with how poorly it seems the team has played up to this point.

wut?

Portland has also won 7 games by 4 points or less. If they would have lost all 7 games they'd have the 4th worst record. Splitting those games they'd have the 10th worst record

the Blazers are .500 on games decided by 4 or less, a 7-7 record. Just isolating the losses without the context of the win is an incomplete picture. Portland's SOS ranges from 25th-27th depending on where you look. They are 2 games above .500 having played 2 more games at home then on the road. They have exactly 1 win against the top-10 teams (top 5 in either conference).

I keep waiting for some kind of positive trend to develop but I haven't seen any yet
