Pick swap with Utah?

The Jazz apparently have a deal on the table to move up in the draft. Portland recently worked out Tony Mitchell. This leads me to think that the Jazz could possibly swap their picks at #14 and #21 for Portland's #10. Does that sound plausible to you?

Players in the #14 range are expected to be Caldwell-Pope, Olynyk, Gobert, Giannis and whoever slips among Carter-Williams, Shabazz and Zeller.

I would imagine if there's any chance at that, Freeland would have to be going to Utah as well with either no salary, a TPE or a unguaranteed contract coming back.

I think if we moved Freeland in the deal then we should do it. I like these two options

1
Adams at 14
Jamaal Franklin at 21

2
Shabazz at 14
Dieng or Withey at 21

I severely doubt Shabazz will still be on the board by 14. Adams probably, not Bazz though.

Who is Utah moving up for? Do they think Burke will fall past Sacramento? As it stands, they seem in a great position to grab one of Schroeder or MCW at #14.

Reports do indicate that Dallas likes MCW at #13, so maybe Utah is trying to leapfrog ahead of them.

As for the pick swap, I do kind of like where #14 and #21 are. At #14 I would take the best player available - and since Utah is probably moving up for a PG there might not really be a talent drop off at the other positions between #10 and #14.

#21 allows us to grab a flier on a defensive center like Adams, Dieng, Withey or Gobert - or if the BPA at #14 was a big, we could go with a wing like Franklin, Bullock, Crabbe, Hardaway ect (lots of role playing wings in this area, I think there could be some solid value).

Swaping picks with Utah so they can move up in the draft... where have I seen this before??? Oh, yeah... 2005. The Blazers trading down with the Jazz and by doing that they passed up on Deron Williams and Chris Paul.

Ironically that trade is what got the Blazers the draft pick the following year that landed Freeland. ;)

Yeah, that trade really backfired on Portland, but that was a much stronger draft and much higher picks being swapped. There seems to be a lot less risk of backfire with a draft like this and at picks like 10 and 14. I don't like the deal if it's just pick swaps, but if Portland can dump Freeland in the process, that would be a good move imo.

I'm assuming that Utah would be targeting one of the top 3 PGs in the draft: Burke, McCollum or Carter-Williams. At least one of them ought to be on the board at #10, but all three could be gone at #14 depending on how things shake out. Dallas still wants to move their pick, etc.

The Jazz did work out Schroeder and Larkin too, tough.

Teams like Philly and OKC would probably take a big. I'd assume Zeller (PF) and Adams (C) would go to Philly and OKC. Dallas would take Carter-Williams or an international player to keep overseas (if they keep the pick). Utah would most likely take a PG. So whatever forwards or wings who were on the board at #10 would still be there at #14.

Where's this supposed rumor coming from?

Love it for Portland if we can give them Freeland and one of our 2nds. We dont need 5 picks in this "weak" draft unless the FO is planning on stashing more euros.

Jazz GM Dennis Lindsay indicated that the Jazz already have an offer on the table to move up. I'm assuming it would be with either Portland or Minnesota and primarily based on swapping picks. Teams that aren't sold on the players available at 9 or 10 might prefer to take 2 picks in a range that's considered to be pretty flat.

Players like Franklin, Rice Jr., Karasev, Hardaway Jr., Bullock, Mitchell, Giannis Whatsisname, Schroeder, Dieng, etc. might turn out better than picks in the 8 - 12 range. Caldwell-Pope is probably also a slight reach at #9 or 10.

The Jazz have been approached about moving players like Favors, Kanter, Hayward and Burks, but I don't think the Jazz are in a hurry to move one of those.

Is there a link to his interview?

I would think KCP would be gone by 14, but you can grab Franklin at 14, and one of Gobert or Nogiera at 21.

Let me see if I can dig it up. It was a week ago.

Edit: The Jazz also worked out Zeller and McCollum this week, so that is also adding to speculation that the Jazz are considering trading up to the 9 or 10 range.

This would be the equivalent of trading the 10th pick for the 14th pick. The value of the 21st pick is minimal because the chance of getting a player worth the contractual commitment is minimal.

If the Blazers want a late 1st round pick, they should just buy one off a smart team wanting to dump theirs.

I'd prefer Dieng at 14 and Karasev at 21 over anything t 10

I would imagine any deal like this wouldn't be agreed to until draft day when the teams have a slightly better idea of how the draft will play out. I still would sincerely hope that if Portland does any slide back, they dump Freeland. Unfortunately, I think this forums desire to see Freeland dumped is a lot stronger than managements desire for it.

I think the deal would at least be agreed upon in principle and finalized around the time that Detroit and Minnesota drafts. However, it sounded like the trade offer is on the table now.

BTW: I had to look up who this Freeland character is. Not a productive player, but his contract can't be that awful as a #30 pick.

I dont know why everyone make Freeland sound untradeable anyway.

I think Portland and LA Lakers would both agree to Blake, Sacre, future 2nd like 2016 for Freeland, Pavlovic and #45

Saves LA I small amount of cash this year. Portland gets a combo guard who is gonna be an expiring. Sacre may end up being serviceable, who knows.

Makes sense. The middle of the draft is pretty strong in terms of bigs and wings.
