I mean. Can we at least deal in some form of realism by recognizing the CBA exists, the Lakers have zero assets left and the idea that two all NBA players are going to decline massive contracts (one a supermax, the other after an ACL injury) to sign for MLEs in their prime?

Can we please just ground ourselves some?

Lakers have two years to create cap space to sign Dame.

And when Dame signs his supermax this will be a moot point.

So it's Klay that's going to be taking the vet min then?

Well, good for Dame. Sucks for Klay. Oh well.

But man, those guys are sure gonna love playing with a 39 year old LeBron for one year before he retires!

They do have potentially a max contract spot

Here's the deal Norm. And this is why people are a little agitated at this idea and/or making fun of it.

You're running a wild idea based on a comment that LeBron once said he'd like to play with Dame.

You're ignoring everything Dame has ever said. Every. Single. Thing.

You're proposing that LeBron is going to use Space Jam to lure players to the Lakers. That it's a precursor to Dame turning down a supermax, which is hundreds of millions of dollars, in the middle of his prime. That it's a sign that Klay Thompson will turn down a max contract to take less than that when he's just torn his ACL. It's that either of these two guys will force a trade to the Lakers.. who have absolutely zero assets of value left after trading for Davis. You're proposing the Lakers will not try to sign someone close to the max this summer, and instead will punt it two years down the road, signing lesser players to one and two year deals, to try to sign Damian then. So that's two years wasted of LeBron at the end of his career after they literally just traded away their future for the next five plus years for Davis.

Do you understand why the comments you're making come off as improbable and in fact a bit infuriating? Because you're trying to start worries out of nothing.

Dame's a charismatic, handsome and talented guy who likes doing this kind of stuff. He raps, he's got multiple sponsorship deals worth literally over a hundred million dollars. It may just be, stick with me here, that Dame is doing the movie.. to do the movie. And I actually find it a bit insulting to Dame as a person, from all we know about him, that you think LeBron is going to convince him to give up his supermax, to come to the Lakers to form a megateam two years from now, when Dame has shown he is anything but weak-willed and anything but someone who rides another person's coattails.

Let's look at the situation you've laid out. In order for Dame (and Klay, since you included him in your original remark) to sign in two years that means..

1. The Lakers decided to not pursue a high level free agent this summer. Instead, they wasted two years of an aging LeBron's last of his prime and acquisition of Davis to sign only role players to punt cap space for a chance that Dame will: a.) turn down his supermax b.) sign in two years.

2. Damian, who will turn twenty-nine next month, decides to turn down a supermax contract that will pay him 191 million dollars.. after he turns 31.

3. Damian, who has had tremendous luck in terms of health, will take the chances that he'll retain that health for the next two years and not suffer an injury that could cost him a max contract.

4. Klay Thompson will either sign a less than max contract with the Lakers this summer (which means Damian would do a min contract in 2021), demand a trade to the Lakers after his max contract from the Warriors is offered despite the Lakers having legitimately nothing to offer the Warriors, or he will sign for the veteran minimum to ensure the Lakers will have a max contract slot.. two years down the road.. to sign Damian.

5. The Lakers will risk the beginning of Anthony Davis' prime by selling him on more superstars joining him in.. two years. As if nothing could change plans, if there were plans in place, and hope he conveniently ignores the actual cap situation and the fact that the LAkers traded almost all their picks until 2025.

Because this rumor you keep pushing, a rumor you've put the most life into, needs all that to happen.

It's more realistic that the actual plot from the original Space Jam could happen in real life than this unfolding.
