Greatest Blazers ever: Vote for #4

Post#1 » by Moonbeam » Sun Jul 14, 2019 10:13 pm

Damian Lillard was voted in as the 3rd greatest Blazer. Here is the list so far.

Who will be voted in as the 4th greatest Blazer ever? The top 3 players dominated the first 4 rounds, with only Brandon Roy receiving any votes in the first 3 polls. It seems #4 is wide open!

How to participate:

1. Vote among the polled players for the player you feel has had the best career as a Blazer.

2. Nominate an unlisted player to join the pool of players eligible to be voted in the next thread.

3. Feel free to argue your case for the players you are voting for and nominating, but do not use this as a platform to belittle the opinions of others.

You are welcome to participate in any and all of these ways. Above all else, have fun!

Project guidelines and links:

Spoiler:
Polls will be remain for 48 hours. Ties will be broken by votes in previous rounds, and failing that, total Win Shares with the team.

Do not consider the careers of players while they were playing for other teams. For example, we're not evaluating LaMarcus Aldridge for his entire career, just for his career with the Blazers.

Do not consider any non-playing roles some former players have had with Portland after their tenure as players. So don't consider Maurice Lucas for his role as a big man coach, just what he brought to the team while he was a player.

This spreadsheet may be a useful resource - it contains information about all 330 Blazer players, including statistics from the regular season and playoffs, all-star appearances and other awards, and MVP vote shares.

Here is a link to the overall 2015 project, which contains links to each of the chosen players.

Whoops! I put Lillard in the poll in place of Roy by mistake, so I've started a new topic. My apologies, everyone!

This is when it really gets hard. For me it’s between Roy and Aldridge. I will go with LMA due to longevity.

I nominate Cliff Robinson.

Yeah, it's tough. I'm thinking of those two plus Porter.

I nominate Jim Paxson. It may be tough to consider him vs Mychal Thompson as they were both similar caliber players on those early 80s-mid 80s teams, but Paxson was regarded as a better player at the time if going by accolades at least.

I'll vote for Aldridge over Roy due to longevity. Roy had a brilliant four seasons but LA had
nine good seasons in Portland and continues to be a solid player in the league.

I voted for Roy. It's very close between Roy and Rasheed. Roy's career was cut so short but he was such a good player.

I nominate Pippen. Pippen, Rasheed, Porter, and Buck were the greatest Blazer teammates and winners. The top 3 and Roy were great Blazer franchise players. A great teammate and winner are different than a franchise player because he sacrifices individual accolades in favor of team success. The top 3 and Roy may have been unselfish enough to sacrifice individual accolades but their teams were constructed to support their individual greatness.

Walton has already been voted in and nomination choice is based off who gets suggested the most. Also how many kids today have ever heard of Petrie or Wicks? My guess is not many at all.

LMA is my choice for this slot and I nominate Cliff Robinson.

If you are looking for a Blazer that was good before the championship season, John Johnson and Lenny Wilkens were the best we had. That might not be saying much because Wilkens was old and Johnson wasn't a star. At least those guys played basketball the right way.

There were some good reasons why Portland didn’t reach .500 as a team
before 1976-7 and they were Wicks and Petrie. Petrie was a good guy but
didn’t do anything but shoot from long distance while Wicks was known
as problem player with small hands and zero leadership skills.

I think guys like Mychal Thompson, Larry Steele, Cliff Robinson, Porter, Kersey,
Sheed, Batum, Matthews, CJ, Sabonis all had good years in a Blazer uniform. I’d
prefer avoiding guys Pippen who while great players, did most of their work
elsewhere. I remember seeing Walter Davis who used to torch Blazer teams in
the 80s at the end of his career in Portland. Great player but just not as a
Blazer.

Went with Terry Porter for my vote - his longevity was great and as a second star, he was unselfish and showed up big in the playoffs year after year, at times being the best Blazer performer.

pick #4 starts the second tier of Blazers. voted for Roy, but one could make an argument for Aldridge (9 seasons, 4 all-star appearances), Porter (10 seasons, 2 all-star appearances). too young to understand old timer's fascination with Lucas. sure, he was a 3x all-star, but he also only played with Portland for 3 1/2 seasons. Sheed's 2 all-star appearances in 7 1/2 seasons seems more meaningful personally.

fun fact - Kevin Duckworth was a 2x all-star during his 7 year stint with the Blazers, yet remains so under appreciated that Norm brought up Larry Steele before anyone ever mentioned him. looks like I'm going to be spending a few threads nominating him.

LaMarcus Aldridge

Post#15 » by Najee12 » Tue Jul 16, 2019 3:02 am

This is was a closer race as there is a drop between the first three players and the next wave of players. I chose LaMarcus Aldridge over Terry Porter and Maurice Lucas. Aldridge had three all-NBA seasons (2011, 2014, 2015) and led the Blazers from its transition from the Brandon Roy-injured period to the current Damian Lillard-led run. His 2013-14 season may have been his best season with THe Blazers (23.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game).

Think it's Roy for me, but Aldridge, Sheed, and Porter all deserve strong consideration. I could be talked into any of them.

Voting is closed! This was a tight race, with 7 different players getting votes. In the end, BRANDON ROY earned the most votes with 6 to be enshrined as the fourth best Blazer ever!

CLIFF ROBINSON was the only player to receive more than one nomination, so he will join the pool of eligible players to be voted as the 5th best Blazer.

Thanks for your participation, everyone!

Without Roy, there's a decent chance Paul Allen would have sold the Blazers and this would be a Seattle Supersonics/Vegas Knights/etc. forum.
