Solid move for a proven vet. Not sure how much he has left in the tank, but he's a high BBIQ player who can be a really good mentor for all the bigs on the team.

As for his on-court impact, all will depend on his health. If he can give 15min a game, he should be a solid help.

Side note as mentioned in the offseason thread, this has been Olshey's 2016 do-over. All the guys he wanted originally that summer he's finally been able to get; Whiteside, Bazemore and Gasol were all targets of his in 2016.

EDIT: I see NBA Twitter has noticed that as well lol.

Who says Portland can’t sign major free agents? We just signed a future hall of famer!

Outstanding signing. It seems like someone suggested the Blazers sign Gasol a couple of weeks ago.

I don't know if his ankle was hurt prior to his being shut down and then ultimately undergoing surgery, but in the games he played for us (3 very limited sample size) he was beyond awful. Looked totally totally cement in his shoes cooked. Spurs fans seemed to think the same when we acquired him. If he's forced to contribute on the floor, it'll be ugly, but he was great in the locker room and enthusiastic on the bench. That's what he provides at this point.

Could do wonders for a guy like Collins.

By next summer, they might over $80 million tied in guys who can play PG

Just waiting for a Chandler Parsons buyout to make it complete.

Let's hope Pau has enough in the tank for 12 minutes a game until Nurk comes back. He was fairly solid on defense against slower opponents last season ,before injury.

Absolutely love this signing from the perspective of a big man around to help teach and coach Nurk, Zach, Skal and Hassan.

It's also nice to have a guy who if healthy, can have a 20 point game on occasion.

There might not be any regular minutes for Gasol. The benefit of veteran smarts is knowledge of how to help team in spot duty.

He won’t play more than 12 mpg unless injuries occur. I love this signing though, he’s a savvy player who can teach ZCo a ton

Gives Portland a big who can pass the ball. Nurk was good, Kanter was OK, neither one will be there in October.

He’ll likely get some minutes early for Collins and Whiteside do tend to get in foul trouble and there is nobody taller than 6-8 after him

Mentor for half a season, a few minutes here and there, and more potential trade filler at the deadline.

I'm not sure the Blazers will have regular minutes for Gasol. The signing was because Stotts didn't want to look to his bench for a big man and see only guards and small forwards.

That puts the roster at 15. We're officially full.

Dame, CJ, Nurk, Hassan, Gasol, Baze, Collins, GTJ, Simons, Little, Tolliver, Hood, Skal, Herzonja. It's only 14. They still have one more guaranteed spot open. Hoard as a 2way contract doesn't count against the full 15 man rotation iirc.

That said, I do suspect Portland is officially done for the summer, the roster is set.

It’s possible someone like Jeremy Lin might be a fit if Simons struggles in camp

Hm, well I was hoping we would sign another PG and guess I got it...

Pretty happy with this signing, we need a couple veterans to help with depth, to get us through the regular season with a decent seed. I wanna make a run at it this year before the LA teams have a chance to gel. Ok but Olshey I still want another point guard this time.
