Hypothetical: If a team offer a George/Clippers level deal for Dame...

Would you take it?

Purely hypothetical as obviously with the supermax signed, he's here for good, so no need to point the obvious out, just a slow news NBA summer "what if".

the first issue is I can't quite remember just how many picks and swaps there were, and what exactly they will be. Maybe that's because it's a boatload of picks or maybe it's because I had a late night and I'm old

I remember it was SGA and Gallo as the players coming in. Gallo is pointless because it the Blazers traded Dame their best route, by far, would be also trading CJ and going for a youth movement (I'd be grossed out seeing CJ as the #1 option and best player on the team). So then Gallo would be a further trade chip, and that has a little value. SGA on the other hand I like quite a bit and see plenty of upside. At the same time, he's the only 'immediate' young prospect coming in so in that regard, the package is pretty light

ok then, I'm now looking at all the future picks OKC has and it's a damn long list. Looking at the LAC portion of the list:

2021 first round draft pick from Miami and/or Houston (two most favorable incl. Oklahoma City)
Oklahoma City will receive the two most favorable of its 2021 1st round pick, Miami's 2021 1st round pick and Houston's 2021 1st round pick protected for selections 1-4 and Houston will receive the least favorable of these three picks (via Miami to Phoenix to Philadelphia to L.A. Clippers to Oklahoma City; via Oklahoma City's right to swap Oklahoma City or Miami for Houston); if the Houston pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyable, then (i) Oklahoma City will receive the Oklahoma City pick and the Miami pick and (ii) Oklahoma City's swap right and Houston's obligation to Oklahoma City will be extinguished [Miami-New Orleans-Phoenix, 2/19/2015; Philadelphia-Phoenix, 6/21/2018; L.A. Clippers-Philadelphia, 2/6/2019; L.A. Clippers-Oklahoma City, 7/10/2019; Houston-Oklahoma City, 7/16/2019]

2022 first round draft pick from L.A. Clippers
L.A. Clippers' 2022 1st round pick to Oklahoma City [L.A. Clippers-Oklahoma City, 7/10/2019]

2023 first round draft pick from L.A. Clippers (swap, Oklahoma City outgoing)
Oklahoma City has the right to swap its 2023 1st round pick for the L.A. Clippers' 2023 1st round pick [L.A. Clippers-Oklahoma City, 7/10/2019]

2023 first round draft pick from Miami
Miami's 1st round pick to Oklahoma City (via L.A. Clippers) protected for selections 1-14 in 2023, 1-14 in 2024 and 1-14 in 2025 and unprotected in 2026 [L.A. Clippers-Miami, 7/6/2019; L.A. Clippers-Oklahoma City, 7/10/2019]

2024 first round draft pick from L.A. Clippers
L.A. Clippers' 2024 1st round pick to Oklahoma City [L.A. Clippers-Oklahoma City, 7/10/2019]

2025 first round draft pick from L.A. Clippers or Houston (swap, Oklahoma City outgoing)
Oklahoma City has the right to swap its 2025 1st round pick for the L.A. Clippers' 2025 1st round pick or Houston's 2025 1st round pick protected for selections 1-10 (if the Houston pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyable, then Oklahoma City's right to swap for Houston and Houston's obligation to Oklahoma City will be extinguished) [L.A. Clippers-Oklahoma City, 7/10/2019; Houston-Oklahoma City, 7/16/2019]

2026 first round draft pick from L.A. Clippers
L.A. Clippers' 2026 1st round pick to Oklahoma City [L.A. Clippers-Oklahoma City, 7/10/2019]

somehow, OKC appears to have weaved together their LAC and Houston trades. Not sure it makes any difference

anyway, the issue I have with that return is it's all geared toward the long game. The first pick they will get is not till 2021. That's a long gap of time between getting SGA and a pick. Now, there is the possibility that some of those later picks from 2023-2026 might be good. There is also the distinct possibility that OKC will not collect a single lottery pick. If Kawhi and PG13 play out their careers in LAC (and there's a decent chance that could happen), none of those LAC picks will be that high in the graft order. Miami? They could be pretty good in 2021 and 2023

so again, trading Dame for one young prospect and the potential of 5 non-lottery picks doesn't really interest me that much. I'm getting old. The Blazers maybe getting a top-10 pick 5-7 years from now doesn't excite me. I'd want a much more immediate payoff than just SGA.

Unless Damian ever actively wanted out, you wouldn’t trade him for anything in this league. He’s not just a rare talent but his leadership/health/longevity lend to the possibility of 6-8 solid more years with a HOF sendoff and a transition into front office. He’s already the greatest Blazer ever and can crack league wide records eventually. This idea unfortunately at this point has zero premise to hypothesize from.

Because we have Dame long terms and he does not want out I would much rather keep him than rebuild with a bunch of picks. If anything we should be offering the massive amount of draft picks to another team for their star.

I agree with most of this but Dame isn’t the greatest blazer ever yet imo. Walton and Clyde i rank higher at the moment

Yeah I think that deal is a reasonable return for a star level player but if Damian wants to be here I would much rather have him play out his entire career in Portland.

Yeah, those picks are a real crap shoot. I mean, let's look at the Brooklyn/Boston trade for an example. Boston got the 3rd, 1st and 8th pick, which is probably the best possible outcome, a lot of the picks OKC is getting are going to be mid to late picks. Those picks became Jalen Brown, Jason Tatum, and Colin Sexton. Would you trade Dame for the ability to draft those 3 guys 8 years from now? I don't think I would.

OKC had some reasons to trade George other than what they got in trade. George wanted a trade and had a record of quitting on his team. OKC was in tax hell and had little prospects of improving a team that lost in the 1st round. Finally, OKC had an opportunity to leverage the value of George with the value of Leonard to get more out of a deal that might be inevitable given George's record as a quiter. Better to do the trade when you can get a big haul then to wait and get almost nothing later.

This would probably be the worst possible time to trade Dame, blow up the roster, and tank. People forget that the NBA is a business and Paul is gone. Do you really think new management would be cool losing money for years in the hope that they could land a player as good as Damian Lillard in order to sell tickets? That doesn't make selling the team, and along with Moda Center's age, provide current or future ownership with a great excuse for relocation?
