Ariza, and 2 1st rounders... it's a bit steep imo, but I'm not super high on Covington, but if the protections on the 2022 pick are solid, this could be a solid move.

On the surface, I love it. I don’t think middling draft picks are of much value to Lillard’s prime.

The trade board had the trade as two FRP in consecutive years which I wondered was legal under the Stepien rule
but if its a protected pick in 2022 its a good trade depending on the protection in 2022

I believe the picks are this years and next years 2021 protected...

Be honest - how many people were cool with CJ for Covington in the past?
People shi- on Olshey, but I honestly believe he has been making solid - not spectacular, but solid moves post Paul Allen. Love Paul but feel his involvement forced win-now moves.

I agree with this. I think people in the GB calling this a massive overpay are a bit out of touch. I think we need to consider 1st round picks a bit of a watered down commodity when it takes basically 5 FRP's for a middling-level All Star these days. Teams are just giving picks away like water. So like, the 18th pick and another around that same range or lower isn't all
that valuable right now as far as I can see.

Excellent move to shore up our trash forward rotation.

My bad.

As long as that second 1st round pick is heavily protected I have no problem with this deal. I love that we got a guy that is almost the same age as Lillard exactly.

Seems like a lot for Robert Covington but I think he will help the team.

Trade won't be finalized until after the draft. So Blazers picking for Houston this draft, then the deal completed after the draft with Ariza, the player picked at 18 and then the 2021 FRP.

It seems like this was a pretty weak draft and next years pick will probably be in that 18-25 range. Blazers are at the spot where they need to be investing in win-now players, not more players like Nassir or Simons that are going to take 2-3 years to develop. You can get lucky at those spots with some diamonds in the rough, but by in large, they are project players in that range.

I think this is a slight overpay for Portland, this is one of the best defenders we could realistically get that still has some offense to his game.
Olshey appears to be going after strong defenders.

Two more years left on his deal at a reasonable cost...
He's not going to be the scoring wing that most of us want and likely will play a role similar to Aminu in the
end. Likely Jay Scrubb will be the SRP but Portland still has their MLE which is going to be a good contract
this summer.

also gotta consider ROCO is on a very good contract and ya have to pay for that, seems like a good trade all around, glad to see Neil make a good move

Steep price but the perfect fit. Covington would have a lot of bidders so Portland had to add that 2021 pick, which teams have been very careful to avoid trading.
Snag another forward with the MLE and I'll be pretty happy with next year's roster. Still want a real PG as our backup but Olshey is allergic to that type player so not counting on it.

Blazers need another PF/C if Whiteside leaves. Neither Zach or Nurkic have shown that they can stay healthy.
Speaking of, hasn’t RoCo had some pretty injury riddled seasons? I’m too lazy to look it up...
EDIT: And for the record, IMHO with a healthy Lillard/CJ/RoCo/Nurkic can begin a PO conversation. The West is going to be incredibly stacked next season...as it was, I don’t think the Blazers are in the PO picture without this trade.

90% of posters here were willing to trade CJ for Covington. Now the Blazers landed him for some draft picks, when we already are stacked on development projects, and landing Covington for mid to late 1sts is an overpay. Seems like expectations are a bit unrealistic.

I’m always a fan of draft picks. Love the draft. But this is a solid double. A rental, good back-up and 2 mid round picks (likely result) for a win now multi-position defender ... D and 3 with blocks and rebounds. Again, it ain’t cheap, but his reasonable contract works and preserves the MLE and TPE options.
Nurkic, Collins, Covington, Hood, Little, CJ, GTJ, Lillard, and Simons. Gabriel and Hezonja. 11-ish.
Keep it up, Mr. Olshey.
