We might have a situation of a temporary GM until the next off-season. Similar to when a coach gets fired during the season they don't always find a new coach they sometimes move another person into the job temporarily.

Watch on YouTube

Ainge deserves the job just based on this. Olshey should've been fired after this aired, just absolutely embarrassing. You can't be a GM and ****talk the city you work for.

I would be insanely happy if the Blazers could get Ainge.

I watched that and have a pretty different take on it all. He's being blunt but be that as it may, he's not saying anything inaccurate... I'm a 36yr non-NBA player and I don't have any desire to live in the PNW, so he's accurate that Portland, OR is never going to win out on lifestyle for young players who care about that.

Most people with extreme drive have some level of narcissistic tendencies, doesn't mean they clinically have those disorders tho.

Not here to be a Olshey defender by any means, I'm plenty happy to see that the Blazers are on the cusp of potentially having a new voice in the FO, but I want to remain fair and unbiased as possible as well without resorting to extremes just because I don't like the guy.

I thought Vulcan was an investment firm.

What do they know about running an NBA team? Well probably no less than Jodi Allen.

She probably needs to hire some consultants or ask the league's help to get some basketball people in there.

That's what the NBA did for Philly a few years ago, right before or right after they ousted Hinkie.

In any event, there are basketball reasons to fire NO, aren't there, apart from this toxic culture stuff?

The thinking is if they fire him with cause he loses out on his remaining years, it's not that they can't fire him. There also is some speculation that Olshey gave himself an extension on his contract basically and they might be a bit peeved at that.

Olshey is not immune to being fired that is not the case at all, Vulcan+Jodie just might not to want to have to pay him after that.

He didn't **** talk Portland in any way. Nothing he said was embarrassing or inaccurate.

Plenty of basketball reasons to fire Olshey. No need to look to be offended because he commented on the weather, the size of the market or the nightlife. POR isn't NYC, LA, MIA or HOU. That's a simple fact. We have gloomy, rainy weather during most of the NBA season, high state income taxes and a lack of nightlife options for wealthy young men. How many NBA players do you think get excited to come to POR so they can visit Powell's Books and VooDoo Donuts (well, other than Raymond Felton)?

Other than maybe MIN, all things considered, I can't think of a less desirable market for young, black millionaires. And I love Portland, moved here in my 20s and will never leave.

They've been running the team since Paul Allen bought the Blazers in the late-80's... So in terms of the financial aspects of running an NBA franchise, I would say they know a decent amount.

MIN actually has a large african american population, something like 20%+, with a lot of nightclubs (Albeit most are tremendously sketchy).

PDX is on par with Utah in terms of lowest % of blacks demographically, with the added similarities of a poor nightclub scene, poor weather but with much higher state income tax than Utah.

Yes, the two biggest strikes against MIN are the weather and being a perpetual losing franchise (missing the playoffs 17 of the last 18 seasons). SAC is another undesirable destination due to all the losing and high state taxes, but at least they are reasonably close to the Bay Area.

No coincidence that one of POR's biggest free agent signings was luring Brian Grant from SAC to POR. Love me some BGrant, but the fact that he's one of the most memorable free agent signings in franchise history, and that happened 22 years ago, kind of reinforces Olshey's point about POR not being a preferred destination for top free agents.

Lots of reasons to hate on Olshey. That video isn't one of them.

My prediction for the rest of the season… Olshey is fired within 2 weeks and the roster is blown up before the trade deadline w/ Dame, CJ and maybe Nurk and RoCo all moved. Nurk and RoCo if not moved will be let to walk in the summer. Team goes full rebuild around Simons, Little and a high draft pick + whatever assets returned from the trades.

wow DB...you're jumping way over the re-tool fence to full "the process"

I have hated Olshey's tenure but I'm not at a full tear-it-all-down position...yet. I'd like to see at least an attempt made to put a better team around Dame; one that isn't anywhere close to Olshey's vision of what a roster should be. Now, I'll admit, it may be too late. Too many years of Dame's prime might have been wasted, and Portland's collection of trade assets, other than Dame, might not be sufficient to do any more than rearrange deck chairs. The time for those all-in moves was 2017-20 and 2022 could easily be too-little-too-late

it might already be a sealed deal anyway because the way this season is going, it could very well be there's a trade-me demand from Dame waiting in May, if not sooner. I've already said I think it would be the worst kind of stupid if Portland trades Dame and then tries to build a team around CJ. If it does come to that, then not only should Dame be shipped out for as many picks and promising young players as possible, than the same should happen with Nurk, RoCo, Powell, Nance and any other player over 24. By far the best potential asset the Blazers could land in that situation is 2 or 3 or 4 high draft picks from being a bad team. The process

now, that might mean Dame would not necessarily be traded to a contender. I really wouldn't like that because that's absolutely not what he deserves. But that's where some imagination from a new GM would come in handy in constructing a multi-team trade so those re-build assets head Portland's way. Teams in that situation tend to not get more than 50 cents on the dollar anyway (at most). Blazers shouldn't expect more

I know this, after everything I've seen from the Blazers in the last 7-8 years, and especially the last 5 months, if Olshey survives this current mess and is still the Blazer GM in the new year...I'm out. Won't bother watching games and won't be a Blazer fan. Maybe not till new ownership.

For financial and optic related reasons you dont blow the team up until Dame asks out. He wont do that during the season so you wait until draft time to press the rebuild button.

And the phrase 'full rebuild around Simons, Little' is basically the same as saying 'full rebuild around Fernandez and Outlaw'. Those guys are role players, at best, not guys you can build around. Neither will ever be a top-3 guy on a good team. Never.

With how well GSW is playing I dont think they make a big move but it might be pretty tempting to bring Dame home. Wiggins, Poole or Moody, Wiseman, Kuminga, 2 FRP for Dame, RoCo?

New death lineup:

G - Curry
G - Dame
F - Klay
F - RoCo
C - Green

You're right, it would be. Saying you rebuild with them doesn't mean they'll ultimately be the teams core players - or even be on the team by the time they get a new franchise player to build around. Don't misconstrue that phrase to think that I believe those guys will be the core of a new era of Blazers basketball... they're just the closest thing the Blazers have to young players that could be around for another 6yrs on the team.

I just don't really see how retool is still in the cards anymore. The team isn't even playing .500 quality basketball and is seemingly coming apart at the seams from top to bottom. Usually when things get THIS bad for a franchise, they go the way of the Thunder and Rockets when they moved PG+Russ and Harden+... well Russ again, and just go really young and get picks.

I agree as you said, anyone over 24 should be moved for whatever the team can get.

A few seasons ago, Blazers were top 10 in defense. Rest of the time, they have been in the bottom half on defense?

Did they do any better in the post season that year? Apparently not well enough to keep the wings who played that year.

How well would Blazer nation tolerate a full rebuild, meaning tank for a couple of seasons and hope to land a possible generational prospect -- Banchero, Bates, Holmgren, Wembanyama.

Though some of those are probably coming in the next draft, not a couple of seasons from now.

I would be willing to grant Dame a trade to a likely championship-level team, if he wants the ring. With that, Golden State or Philly fit that bill IMO, and the returns from either team, even if modest in others eyes, could still be huge enough to make our current roster much more competitive over the next 5 years... but I'll spare the trade possibilities for now.

Bigger problem is we have no GM function/ability right now. Until Olshey is ultimately fired, and a new GM is hired, we likely roll with what we have, right? In short, regardless of Olshey's lovability, his performance has been horrible of late, evidenced IMO by the pure stonewalling of other GMs this last off-season, when there WAS a huge amount of activity, moving BIG-TIME players with large contracts. But Olshey just couldn't get that CJ trade done, but locked Powell up(who I'm loving) for 5 years.

Biggest problem comes now: Getting a decent GM candidate that wants to inherit this mess of a roster. AINGE  Our best hope, because I can only imagine what the interviewing process will be like: Trying to answer honestly about one's ideas about trades with big money-making players must be soo difficult to do. Could a candidate even hint at moving the Vulcan's Cash-Cow?

Craziest thing is, I can totally imagine an Olshey's secret desire, in cahoots w/ Morey, that wanting to trade Dame, is exactly what is getting him run from Portland. Course we'll never know.

WUT?

so...trading Dame for Andrew Wiggins & Jonathon Kuminga will make Portland "much more competitive over the next 5 years"...? Much more competitive than who? The Timberwolves and the Rockets? The only place Portland would be more competitive is the lottery
