Oregon Football coach (OT)

I need to think about something else but the putrid outings that I had to watch on Thursday and Saturday..
The winds of change in CFB have been fascinating with USC getting Lincoln Riley, LSU getting Brian Kelly
and now we are seeing perhaps the three big programs in the P12 (USC, UW and perhaps Oregon) all
changing coaches with the news that Cristobal apparently is headed to Miami. Canzano is already is
already pushing Chip Kelly as the new UO coach. If Cristobal stays, it might take $8-9 Million/season
to keep him,

Can't tell if you are advocating for Christobal to stay or to go... As an Oregon Alumni, I can't think of a worse situation then Oregon losing a coach who has turned this program around. Maybe people have short memories of the chaos that was Oregon football before he took over.
My opinion his he is a quality coach, person, and the best recruiter in memory. Oregon should do whatever it needs to do to keep him. There is no one better out there for this program.

I'm neither for or against Cristobal but one can understand the pull of family, friends and going home
plus an extension would be $85 Million over 10 years. Nike has already signed off (reportedly) on the UO
extension so his decision will not come down to money but what Cristobal wants to do.

Guess the discussion should now be who can replace him at Oregon.
https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/miami-hires-mario-cristobal-hurricanes-make-brash-move-luring-oregon-coach-home-but-will-it-work/I am extremely disappointed, but I can understand his reasons for leaving. Hope it does not turn out for him like it did for Taggart(spl) at Florida State.
Here we go again on the Coaching Carousel.

Nike can get most anyone they want to be head coach. It will come down to who Phil wants to be head coach for
if that's Chip, it will be Chip.

I would be surprised if Chip ends up the head coach again, it felt like he left on not the best of terms.

Not just as a fan my honest opinion is I think they go big: Matt campbell or fickell. They were willing to offer mario big money so i think they have the money to lure a big name away. They had 8.5 mil a year plus now 10 mil in savings between mario’s buyout and the 1 million dollars we aren’t bonusing him this year which i think puts us comfortably in the 10 mil a year range for a head coach, very close to what lincoln riley got. Just like usc oregon is set up to dominate its division and an ideal situation. to walk into, i can’t imagine fickell or came turning down a chance to in essence triple their income assuming their existing schools couldn’t come close to matching 10 years 100 mil

Would they offer the $8.5 Million/year to Peterson?

You have to break the coaches up into dream, aspirational, and fallback tiers.
When I was in high school, the week before prom I started asking girls and they were like "OMG I would have loved to but I said yes to _ 3 weeks ago!"
And that is Oregon now.
Chris Petersen is a great coach, but he quit because he was burned out and didn't like the direction college sports was heading.
Urban Meyer and Matt Rhule might be burned out at the NFL level. But what makes anyone believe that they'd want to go back to college? Both could probably land OC jobs.
All amazing coaches, but that's not realistic. You ask, but you don't act surprised if the prom queen doesn't want to date you when she has better options or isn't interested in going.
So then you have your ideal realistic candidates. And this is where I think you poach the Big 12. The SEC and "Alliance" want 4 conferences. And no - replacing Oklahoma and Texas with BYU and Cincinnati, etc. are going to keep the Big12 relevant.
And yes, that means Aranda.
But it also means Gundy (who would be a hard sell but a great coach).
Campbell has trended downward, but if the price is right.
Kiffin probably fits in this tier. And while I know it wouldn't end well, that is Must See TV.
Then there are the fallback names. These are your Justin Wilcox, Kalani Sitake type names. I don't hate the good ones. You hope for better, but you're so late into the coaching carousel game. And the last coach you hired externally was from USF.
One name I am surprised is getting no burn is Tom Herman. He was solid at Houston and not as bad as people remember at Texas. Get the Texas booster drama off of his back, and he could be a solid 5 coach.
Again, not an aspirational name. But if it's last call...

The word tonight is Oregon has asked UCLA for permission to speak to Chip who seems at an impasse on a
new deal with UCLA. As I wrote before, Chip is very close to Phil and Phil apparently wants Chip to be the
coach.

All rumors at this point as to what oregon will do as uo runs a very tight lipped admin. If we bring chip back we’ve gotta get a recruiting specialist in the staff

Situation seems quite fluid for the Atlanta Constitution is reporting Dan Lanning who is the Georgia
DC could get the job as soon as Monday. With the early signing day for recruits coming up, there is
a lot of pressure to hire a HC, to preserve what remains of a top 10 recruiting class.

I think Canzano reported they interviewed Justin Wilcox on Thursday. I would much prefer an Oregon Guy that is not going to want to go somewhere else. He is a very good defensive coach, and if they could also hire a strong offensive assistant coach, he would be my preferred choice.
I would not want to deal with Chip leaving for greener pastures again.

No way to wilcox. His record and recruiting are meh. Going after him is basically saying we are on the level of osu and i’d much much rather go after someone better even if they bail because in the long run that puts us on a better path and winning a natty is far far more important than a coach not leaving. If a coach bails it’s a good thing and means he’s had great success here generally which i can accept. Hopefully our next coach stays but i’m don’t wanna lower our standards just to have a loyal coach

The Georgia 247 site is reporting its a done deal and the 36 year old Georgia DC is going to be the new coach
at the UO. What's really odd is his first game as HC will be against the Georgia Bulldogs to open the 2022
season.

Not a bad hire, he helped orchestrate a pretty damn good defense in Georgia this year.

Canzano had an interesting piece on the coaching change. I did not know that Wilcox turned down the job, or that 14 former players shared the same concerns I did.
https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/john_canzano/2021/12/canzano-ex-oregon-ducks-greats-wrote-letter-to-ad-rob-mullens-worried-about-programs-lost-identity.htmlHonestly, the more I hear about Dan Lanning the more I feel better about the hire. I love defense, and would very much like to see Oregon become known for having great defenses. Let's hope he picks a good offensive coordinator.
