Love this pick! BIG swing! Exactly what we need! It seems like we are keeping it?

I'd hope so. No guarantees that he pans out, but at least he has the potential to. A Dort or even OG trade isn't going to push the Blazers past Golden State, so you have to take some risk - be it in the draft or trade.

Yeah, I liked the idea of getting OG or Collins for 7, but just 7. Not 7 and Hart. 7 and Little mayyyybe, but I was only ok moving 7 alone, not giving up more value on top of that for the likes of OG or Collins. I also never loved the idea of the OKC deal.

So if the choices were, 1) give up a lot of value beyond just the pick to get a player, 2) move down to get a player who doesn’t fit at all and will be wasted on the bench, or 3) just take a swing on the BPA with a lot of upside, I’ll take 3 every time.

If you hit on the pick, he’ll be better than any of the guys you would have gotten back in the trades. I’m always for the mystery door when the known price is just a dining room set.

Yeah Hart is a hefty price. He can actually handle sf duty I think because of his play style. Giving up a good pick on top of Hart for og seems like a Toronto robbery to me, og is good but I think a bit overrated

Also, this was the new Assistant GM Mike Schmitz - supposed ex DraftExpress - draft gurus pick for the player of the draft if I remember right. So I’m interested to see how good this guys eye for talent is. He got the guy he touted in this draft.

This was definitely Mike’s pick. I really trust our GM’s talent evaluation skills, if Sharpe is his guy then we should probably be excited. I do question his motor, but hopefully coaching and leadership corrects that.

Yeah, I like it just because of the fact that the reason Mike got hired was because he was a draft guru. So this feels like him taking his shot and it’s a pretty fast way to see if he’s the guru everyone touted him as. A lot of fans here were stoked on his hire, so he’s now got something he can put his name too and we can see if he’s really as good as he was advertised.

Drafting sharpe is a total roll of the dice gamble. He could've been a top 3 pick next season and quite likely would have been. I think with a 7 pick we can afford this sort of gamble given that he's super young with tons of the physical attributes. If it doesn't pan out not the end of the world and I'd rather portland go for the chance at an all star than a guarantee at a fringe starter

Not just the Canadian aspect, but his build and movements/game really remind me a lot of early Wiggins.

Kinda a letdown draft all things considered for fireworks, but again, totally content with the pick… probably means he’ll be a bust lol

Watching the war room vid is pretty telling…

Although I 100% understand why they do it, it always bugs me when scouts compare players like Sharpe to established, dominant NBA players. There’s a much better chance that Sharpe develops into Qyntel Woods than almost all of the players to which I see him compared (on the court only, of course)…

I would LOVE it if he simply turned into a reasonably decent player, lol.

This kid has all of the physical tools but nothing we've seen yet (not playing at Kentucky, interviews, HS) indicate that he is anywhere close to having the mental tools to succeed. Hopefully the Blazers staff can get him on the right track quickly.

If he had all these boxes checked he'd be drafted in the top 3 instead of being there at 7.

Right. He could be the most talented player in the draft but his motor is a huge concern. It wouldn't shock me if a guy like Dalen Terry ends up better with the chip he had on his shoulder in our interview.

Mathurin was my guy behind Murray who I think will be the best in the class but both were gone. Hopefully billups can light a fire under him.

I'll take the most talented guy 9 times out of 10 unless a guy is Ben Simmons 2.0. I feel like chasing after talent is the more sure fire way to get a stud. There's a lot of immature rookies you just hope they can grow up eventually and you help them as much as you can along the way via adding good veteran leaders and good mentors in the coaching positions

Going after pure talent isn't a sure fire way to success you certainly have to weed out the really bad apples but there's plenty of guys somewhere in the middle who aren't a lost cause imo especially when they're as young as this kid. I'm cautiously optimistic here and for sure if the rumored offer of Hart and 7 for og was on the table I'm glad it didn't work out presumably because man that'd hurt bad
