I think this kills any talk about a KD to Portland situation, since the only way to get Simons to the Nets would be sign and trade. Now we might still be making an offer on KD not using Simons but I just am not sure that competes with other teams.

Was hoping it'd be for cheaper, but I'm comfortable with it.

Could use Nurk on an overpaid resigned contract to match money along with picks and Hart but yeah not sure that gets us close in value. I think they'd really have to like someone like sharpe

I think the best we could assemble is Hart + nurk S&T + shaedon + boatload of picks that skirt around the Chicago obligation. would be worth the gamble for kd if we can finish the roster with vets

No options I'm assuming given the price?

Ive been saying form the beginning he would get a max deal, but i was hoping we could grab him for 20 so i guess it averaged out. My biggest thing is he should be used in a s&t for Durant, but with how quickly this was done he probably stays here. I also think this was overpay and in classic Olshey fashion Cronin set the market instead of allowing him to see what other teams would pay. But then again Det, NYC or Orl could have offered more.

The second Ant sat his final games after breaking out coming off a rookie deal we should have understood this wasnt a 'let him test the market' situation.

Sure of course we all expected that but it doesn’t mean it’s the best move. The deal is fine I guess, I’m sure it will age well. Like I said, I would hope that it’s part fo a sign and trade for KD though.

Well there was some speculation that Ant was actually not as injured as speculated, so perhaps the Blazers set this deal up with him on the down low in return for him sitting out the last 15 or so games of the season. It was a bit suspicious when nearly every player that was leading to wins after Dame and CJ were completely done both developed injuries that took them out for the remaining games as the season ended.

I bet Ant was hell bent on playing and winning games as the season ended to build his value up especially with the new contract looming.

Exactly. We did a wink-wink that he gets X contract if he sits out and helps the tank.

Going back on that would be total bush league. Like, if that were me I would vocally tell the league the org made this deal under the table, asked me to sit out while healthy and rescinded the handshake bush league. It would implode the Blazers reputation overnight. We would be below the Kings on the hierarchy of organizational respect.

On the face of this deal, it is a bit of an overpay. Not many teams with the money and positional need. I heard earlier 4/80 and that would be OK. 4/100 is a classic Blazer overpay for an "our guy" player IMO. I hope he proves me wrong.

I'd muchhh rather this deal than Dort's or Beal's. Sheeesh.

The Blazers drafted him in 2018 and have more inside knowledge than we can come close to processing. As a franchise, you don't dump Powell and trade CJ if you don't have faith in Simons.
If having one player paid $5M over what he should is franchise crippling, the Blazers are doomed.
If Simons continues his development, this is a win for the Blazers.
If Simons had a small stretch of good games on a bad team and was overpaid, this is a loss for the Blazers.
If the Blazers move on from Dame or Dame simply ages, you have a Simons+Sharpe back court for the future to build around.
I get it. It might not be the A+ sexy move some fans think the Blazers were going to do, but there are certainly worse contracts the Blazers could have offered.

Well as the cap grows this contract also looks better, if he develops anywhere near all-star potential or better the contract looks like a bargain. Even if that is not the case if the cap booms soon that $25 million will be more like paying a player $18 million right now.

When you sign a player to a max contract that goes up or down as the cap goes, meanwhile this is set at $25 million period.

AM620 this afternoon had some guest NBA person on and he said the Blazers could have signed Simon's to a 4/$60M deal last summer. I'll bet that's looking a whole lot better now. Thanks again Olshey!

I don't think that is correct, I heard that they offered Simons a contract last off-season and Simons turned it down. If that is the case Simons pulled a Gary Trent Jr. who also turned down a contract then had a great year and signed a bigger one.

I thought it sounded a little light when he said it. 4/$80 I could see.

Well whatever the amount is we will never know for sure, I just heard that a contract was offered to Simons and he said No. It's very easy to find out about NBA contracts that happen it's much harder to find out about ones that didn't.

That amount was only known to Anfernee, his Agent, Olshey and a few others that worked for him. Again the contracts that get signed eventually come out, the ones that don't get thrown in the trash.

Yeah there is nothing wrong with overpaying one guy a little bit. But when we take a look at a bigger picture -Blazers overpaid Simons a bit, overpaid a bit Nurk, Payton etc. and at the end of the day we have a mediocre roster and already into the luxury tax zone, I afraid the loose salary policy might not have been that great idea.

We are a small market team in a high tax state. Overpaying is the only real edge we can get. Compared to a Texas or Florida team we have to overpay just for the after-tax amount to be similar.

I was hoping for 4/80 and frankly, that could be argued as an overpay considering that Simons did not show he deserved anything close to that except for a 25 game stretch, in his 4th season, playing for a bad team, in games that didn't matter at all

but players who show potential during their rookie scale usually get a 'juiced contract' in their extension. The extra 5M a year is only about 4% of the salary cap so it's not a significant overpay. Hopefully, Simons continues that limited sample size trajectory and the contract ends up looking like a bargain

Nurkic at 4/70 is worse than Simons at 4/100....but neither contract is close to the Crabbe or Evan Turner or Meyers Leonard debacles
