Blazers Sign Jared Rhoden???

Post#1 » by DaVoiceMaster » Thu Aug 4, 2022 1:12 am

Jared Rhoden has agreed to a one-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Rhoden, who went undrafted out of Seton Hall, will have a chance to compete for a roster spot in camp.

Who the heck is this guy and why? I think they already have 15 players under contract so is it a two-way contract?

Why didnt they just say that. I'm scratching my head why they signed someone to a one-year deal. Thanks for the update.

Yeah I think he is playing for a 2 way spot, unless he looks extremely good then maybe they offer him a longer deal after this year. This guy was very impressive at SL though, he had the highest +/- of any player in SL across all teams.

I also love a player like this that went undrafted playing with a chip on his shoulder.

yay. another guard. Nothing against Rhoden, he seems like a promising young guy with a great attitude, but I'd much rather have given a 2-way to a Moses Brown type guy who can play center. I imagine the thinking is that when you have guys like Dennis Schroeder and Enes Kanter still available a team can always get a stop gap center or PG if an injury to Dame or Nurk should happen while we want to stay in playoff contention.

Just training camp bodies, much like yesterday's signing of Pelle and the Wolves signing Eleby.

Big problem for Portland is if he makes the roster for that just means Sharpe could very well
see zero PT for most of the season, much like Ant saw zero PT in 2018.

Cool.

Need to find roster spots for Gojira and King Ghidrah and we’re set.

That makes zero sense. Why would an undrafted soon-to-be 23-year old who is just hoping to make an NBA roster (and probably won't) send the Blazers highest draft pick since Damian Lillard to the end of the bench?

In Ant's case, on a deep veteran team that won 53 games and was 3rd seed in the West, Simons got more playing time his rookie season than fellow rookie and 2nd round pick Gary Trent Jr. - even though Trent had a much more NBA ready body and game. And it's not like Ant was a lottery pick. He was a late first round pick and still got more PT than Trent who started all 37 games as a freshman on one of the top college teams in the nation. Trent Jr. was the 8th ranked recruit in the entire nation (ESPN gave him score of 95/100). Rhoden didn't even crack the top 100 in his recruiting class (ESPN score of 79/100).

By contrast, Sharp was the No. 1 ranked recruit in his class. Unless he is injured, there is no way Jared Rhoden is stealing minutes from him. He has WAY more talent than Rhoden and is over three and a half years younger and was a high lottery pick. He's not going to rot on the bench while POR "develops" Jared Rhoden. This is a training camp invite. Nothing more. He signed a Summer League contract with Sacramento and was cut loose after an unspectacular performance (.125 3FG%).

I don't see any "big problem" here. Even if Rhoden makes the roster (highly unlikely), he's going to be 15th man. He won't be stealing minutes from Sharpe. Your comparison is apple:oranges and you "fear" is unfounded and irrational

Right now, that highest draft choice since Damian Lillard, is likely behind Dame, Ant, Hart, GP2 and
Keon Johnson. Portland also has a two way player already on the roster in Brandon Williams

Don't look at being draft seventh as a guarantee for PT for the guy hasn't really played since his junior
year in HS. Portland doesn't have to play him and he will be further behind after missing the summer
program. On a team that is trying to compete for the playoffs, they are not going to force feed a
player until he's ready to play.

I think the first month or so of the season will be devoted to experimenting more with the roster. Many coaches use that time to really adjust things and try out different players to see how they play. As the season goes along that experimentation becomes less and less, since most coaches at that point have a set rotation barring injury.

With the heavy shakeup to the roster in the last season this also puts more emphasis on experimentation, it's not like we brought back 90% of the players we had at the start of the 2021-2022 season.
