Who's your favorite buy low player?

Post#1 » by Goldbum » Wed Feb 8, 2023 12:10 am

Just curious. I'm 100% convinced that we need to stay away from bidding wars and over priced(trade not contract) players. For example last year a lot of people thought Randell was overpaid and could be had for expirings... Ben Simmons is being called a negative asset. Ayton could be available for less than he's worth ect ect

My list for now:
Patrick Williams
Ayton
Ben Simmons
John Collins
Sadiq Bey
Okoro
Avidja

The list goes on...but I really want to hear who your favorite buy low guys are.
Thoughts?

Simmons had 2 points and 6 assists tonight with a steal and a block. No way in hell i’m tying up that much cap space with him when he either bolts to LA when his contract is over or retires. He just coasts, doesn’t give a **** about winning and probably basketball in general. He’s never improved his game and was good just enough to get his second deal setting him up for life. he’s a con man and I don’t want him anywhere near the Blazers.

I really Like Bey, he’s got a young Jae Crowder vibe and we need forwards.

Justise Winslow is basically Ben Simmons at this point except he makes a tenth of what the Aussie basket-case makes. Hoping Simmons will turn it around in Portland is wishful thinking.

Most seasons I would have a pretty long-list of buy low guys but this year its pretty sparce. Some buy-low guys I like:

Long-term starter potential

- Okungwu - I still see a Bam Adebayo type of player
- Thybulle - plays well enough offensively with Australia
- Bamba - needs a fresh start. His processing speed seems to have improved a lot
- Pat Williams - will never be good enough to justify his draft position but he's startng to figure it out

Good role player

- Saric - having a really solid comeback the past couple of weeks
- Naz Reid
- Nerles Noel - woud much rather have him at center than Nurkic.

What about Ja'Sean Tate? Could be as good as a lot of these rumors at half the cost?

Decent player but hard to see a role for a 6'4, 27 year-old power guard on this team, especially given his $7 million salary. I'd rather give those minutes to win now guys like Hart or Payton or win later guys like Sharpe, Little or Jabari

Smart.
I'm hearing Hart could go to Miami with Jovic coming back if they can find a 3rd team...

Hart makes $10 million more than Jovic so there would have to be pieces. Miami does have its own pick though and that has some appeal.

Yeah what I heard is Oladipo or Martin going to a 3rd team. Jovic and a center to Portland. The reason I heard abouts it was they tried to get another team in the NW division involved.

Vanderbilt and Jovic would be a great return for Hart

Ya, I love Hart but Vandy and Jovic would be a tremendous return. I am really high on Jovic though.

Dont see how a 3 way works though w/ UTA - what salary / asset(s) are they getting for Vandy?

Maybe 2 moves?

Little + 2 SRP for Vandy
Hart for Jovic + C from team X

Portland doesn't have/wouldn't trade the assets for some of these names.

Would honestly be surprised if Portland did anything beyond a Winslow for a backup 4/5 level trade.

Sounds like the Knicks are about to give up on Cam Reddish... I'm curious what the deal is there... He was decentish in Atlanta before falling off a cliff and Thibs seems to absolutely hate him. Reddish could be one of those guys who just needs the right fit

Hart + SRP for Cam + Toppin is a nice swing IMO.

It doesnt move the needle, but it at least ensures a return on the likely to walk Hart and both are young enough, and have enough raw talent, to potentially blow up in the right situation.

I could see Thibs really overpaying for Josh.

Yeah, this is the deal I was thinking as well. Not sure what the Knicks thoughts on Toppin are, but if that's on the table, I like that deal.

Ya, certainly not a home run but I would understand it in a 'we dont have chance / assets to get a true #2 for Dame so lets swing on some youngsters using a guy we probably lose in FA' type of thinking.

I proposed a deal a couple of weeks ago that was similar to this so I would be really happy if something like this transpired:

Detroit trades:

Bogdanovic
Noel

Detroit receives:

Dallas 1st (11-30)
Detroit 1st returned
Rose (team option for 2023-24)
Cam Reddish
Keon Johnson

The Pistons get their pick back which gives them more flexibility going forward. They also get the Mavs pick and two youngsters worth kicking the tires on.

New York trades:

Dallas 1st (11-30)
Detroit 1st returned
Obi Toppin
Rose
Cam Reddish

New York receives:

Bogdanovic
Josh Hart

The Knicks getting a much needed massive upgrade their depth adding two guys who can play a big role in expanding their core from 6 to 8 guys. Bogdanovic is having a career year while Josh Hart is the consummate 3 and D Thibs player who gives 100% every posession on both ends.

Portland trades:

Josh Hart
Keon Johnson

Portland receives:

Nerlens Noel
Obi Toppin

Portland gets a much needed size increase and more defensively versatility. With GP2 finally playing and Sharpe exceeding expectations this clears up the back-court jam. Noel gives the Blazers a potentially different look at center which is much need in certain match-ups. Toppin gets a new chance at finding his spot in the league.

I feel like Reddish is one of those guys you know is just destined to be a blazer. If he does it will continue Olsheys legacy of taking bust draft picks and hoping they turn into decent role players. It will also continue to confirm my theory that Cronin has been the shadow GM all along with Neil just taking the “credit” for the decisions.
