Dillon Brooks

Apparently the Grizzlies will let Brooks walk for nothing:
?s=20
Could Brooks be the solution to our SF/SG woes?
We definitely could use an agitator. It seemed like many players didn't care last year.

I guess for the MLE/tMLE its good value but I really, really, really hate Dillon's shot selection. Dont even care about the overly chatty mouth, for me his real wart is he seems to say 'I will shoot 4 times per quarter regardless of the quality of the shot'. Its maddening.
I think we need a true needle mover, not quality role players and certainly not quality role players that will demand 14-16 shots per game when they should be taking 10 max.

Short answer.... NO.
Brooks brings the attitude (which Portland needs), but he's basically a near minimum-level contract type player skill wise. Portland needs skill/talent more than attitude right now.

He's actually an elite wing defender. Beggars can't be choosers. I'll take an elite skill where I can get it.

I would pass on Brooks due to mostly fit with Grant (if he re-signs.

By what metric?
Admittedly, most/all the defensive metrics are noisy - but I don't see anything indicating that he's elite.

If Portland trades Simons for frontcourt help signing Brooks to a reasonable deal to back up Sharpe might be a good idea.

He's a solid defender but he's not an elite shooter and he thinks he's a star rather than a roleplayer.

Maybe tough vet Dame could keep him in his lane. He’s relevant to a playoff team and his idiotic villain BS this season might really cost him and POR could get him a short term “prove you’re not a useless distraction” deal. He’s apparently efficient from certain spots (corner 3’s). That sounds an awful lot like a young PJ Tucker…if he would just shut his mouth, D up, and play to his strengths. He needs a strong coach and a strong star vet to manage. I hate that he’ll probably go to LAL for $100.00, bow to LBJ, and be great. He’s no Rodman, but it’s somewhat similar…you put him in a weak, young locker room and you get mayhem, but he CAN contribute on a good team in a limited role.

I don't want that ego in my locker room. Even if you put him around vets I don't trust him to not be a problem. There was a reason the griz used the words "under any circumstances". That kind of language hurts a players value which creates issues with agents etc. They wouldn't have said that if it wasn't warranted. Re-sign Winslow and Thybulle. If we want a player like that, waive all these cap holds and go after Draymond, because he actually contributed to winning 4 rings.

Fun fact - Thybulle actually has a higher career 3PT% than Dillon.
Give me good-guy Matisse, who is a better defender and doesnt go into every game with a promise to himself to shoot at least 14 times.

He's pretty inefficient but this essentially boils down to one thing - money. After the clown fest he performed in the post season I think it's unlikely to see Dillon getting substantial offers from a financial standpoint.

I disagree. Brooks is a decent defender but he is a real long ways from elite
he plays with intensity and sometimes that can look like he's defending great. But the results are not great. Brooks has consistently posted defensive ratings 2-3 points
worse than his team. And he has a negative DBPM. An elite defender would not have those results
by contrast, Matisse Thybulle...a truly elite defender (
twice named to the all-NBA-Defense 2nd team) has consistently posted defensive ratings 3-4 points
better than his team. This season he was 3 points better for Philly, then came to Portland and was 3 points better here. And while Brooks has a career -1.0 DBPM, Thybulle has a career mark of +3.3
which points out that there is no reason, at all, for Portland to consider Brooks when they already own the Bird Rights to Thybulle. And unlike Brooks, Thybulle knows enough to stay in his lane. He's actually a better shooter than Brooks with a TS% of .551 vs Brooks at .512. But Thybulle only sports a career 10.1% usage rate. Brooks is at 23.2%. For chrissakes, Brooks actually has a higher career usage rate than Anfernee Simons
some other factors as well: Brooks is a crappy rebounder for a 6'7 wing. His career rebound rate is 5.9%. 6'2 Damian Lillard who lives on the perimeter has a career rate of 6.2%. And he's a poor passer and facilitator. He has a career assist rate of 11.1%. Trendan watford has a rate of 15.4%
so let's review Dillon Brooks:
* an inefficient high usage chucker who apparently has no control or shame about his chucking. A career TS% of .512 when the NBA average is .550
* a career PER of 10.9 when the NBA average is 15.0
* a career winshare/48 0f 0.033 when the NBA average is 0.100
* a career BPM of -3.8 when the NBA average is 0.0
* a career ValueOverReplacemt of -4.6 when the NBA replacement level player has a -2.0
* a poor rebounder and a weak passer
* and who comes with a ton of personal baggage
just say no to Brooks

Nice advertisement for Matisse Thybulle. Sold.
He can guard 1-3 … not all the time or the best PGs or SFs, but he’s a dude. Great to have off the bench!
And if Ant is traded, and Sharpe isn’t quite ready, Thybulle can start at SG for part of the season so long as the Blazers have the best forward combo in years.
Okay. About Dillon Brooks. I’m a Duck grad, and I was never a Dillon Brooks fan. Just wasn’t. He’s been paid well for what he has done. Getting a significantly bigger payday isn’t likely. He’s no reclamation project, and he can play … and with work he could … could become a 3&D guy. His D needs work. His shooting needs work.
The Blazers have other needs.

Hard pass on Brooks.
I suspect he’s gonna end up on “prove it” contracts until he has a solid season without antics. 1 and 1 w TO type deals.

right now I'd wonder if that is the best case scenario for Brooks. I would not be surprised if he has trouble even getting a vet minimum deal this summer. Memphis officially saying they would "
not re-sign him under any circumstances" is a torpedo slamming directly into Brooks under his waterline. I'd be curious if there is more to this story we haven't heard yet. But what we've seen may leave Brooks on the outside looking in this summer

Oh yeah, to be fair, I think you’re right that’s best case scenario. Definitely top end. I suspect someone will do it, but also wouldn’t surprise me to see lower… but I’ll eat my hat if he gets a higher and/or longer contract than the mid-level 1/1TO.

He's a vet minimum until he gets his act together.
