TIERS - 2023 NBA DRAFT - Who Goes into Which?

Post#1 » by HoopsFanAZ » Tue Jun 6, 2023 10:27 pm

BPA -- so goes the mantra of taking the best pick available regardless of current fit. The disagreement about criteria and rankings begins soon after.

Tiers -- a way of grouping players -- and then ranking them within a tier -- so that a team selects any player from within a given tier instead of selecting a player from a lower tier. One would hope -- looking at Mike Schmitz and others -- that all the relevant criteria for placement in a given tier already settles choices prior to the actual draft. 5 or 6 tiers are used.

Since no one has created this thread for the upcoming draft ... (1) feel free to modify descriptors of a tier, (2) place draftees where you think they fit, (3) justify your selections or not, (4) rank players within a tier or not, and (5) enjoy it for what it is.

TIER 0: Generational and/or Superstar if potential is met. Only one name or nickname is required.
TIER 1: If potential is met, all star / #1 on a good to contending team / franchise keystone
TIER 2: A #2 player on a contender / fringe all star / Robin not Batman / a foundational player but not likely the keystone of a team hosting a playoff series
TIER 3: A starter on a quality team / in the upper half of starting players at that position
TIER 4: High quality 6th man / 4th or 5th option as a starter
TIER 5: A rotation player
TIER 6: Project / 2 years away from being 2 years away / fan favorite, name gets chanted in blow-outs, memes created

[I'm not dying on any of these hills for the description/definitions. Names are typed so you don't have to ... but only so many. Once done with Tier 3, I'm just typing up names that have been named.]

This is roughly my thought on this draft too. I actually have Miller a tier below Scoot as well. I think Scoot has real potential to be in the mix for best PG in the league when he's nearing his prime years. I don't think Miller gets to that level, I think he's more around a PG / Brandon Ingram-level player at his max potential.

Interesting you've got James Nnaji ahead of Lively, who likely will be a top 20 pick
in this draft due to scarcity of bigs.

Nnaji by all reports has all the physical tools but is greener than Jalen Duren who went in
last year draft to the Pistons.

I think scoot turns out the best player in the draft. Alpha skill set and alpha personality, yet can slide into a team atmosphere. I’ll be ecstatic if we exit this offseason with him paired with Shaedon particularly.

I know that’s not necessarily the majority vote, but I’m seeing something special in him.

Well let's not forget that Scoot is a 6'2" dude who doesn't seem to be gifted with the athletic tools of Ja or prime D Rose. I still think talent wise he's a better prospect than Miller and barring injuries he's going to be a really good player. But I don't think he'll turn out to be THAT good.

Totally on Team Scoot as well. Scoot's floor is Ricky Rubio - a competent starter level pure point guard.

But Miller isn't a bad consolation prize if Charlotte decides to not Charlotte the draft. Every team wants a talented 6'9" combo forward. And there's a very realistic chance he'd be the best wing Portland has had since Batum.

Best part is that either of the two can play next to Sharpe. If you take Scoot, you don't necessarily have to trade Dame, but if you keep Dame, you have to trade Simons. Not the worst thing. Markkanen was effectively trade filler until he found a home to thrive.

If I go by your definitions in the tiers, I think Wemby is Tier 0.

Then we skip Tier 1 entirely…maybe even Tier 2. I have Black, Scoot and Miller in Tier 2.

I am worried if we do draft him that he will spend his time as part of the bench unit, to really prove his worth he needs a starting role and 30+ MPG no matter what. The timeline of a NBA player is accelerated heavily if you shove him into the starting lineup as the main guy on day 1.
