What will Cronin do with Billups?

Post#1 » by Sinobas » Fri Apr 4, 2025 2:17 am

Taking bets on what the Blazers will do with Billups. I predict they will resign him to a 1 year deal.

It's just a gut feeling, because of how long they've stayed with him thus far, and the fact that the Blazers are on the upswing, they're 20-15 since Jan 19.

I think the refrained from firing Chauncy because we were tanking. I don't agree with that, but the only explanation I can come up with, because the team was not playing like a well coached team.

Professional teams usually don't keep head coaches around after 2 consecutive losing seasons, let alone 3, let alone 4. In fact according to chatgpt, Bill Fitch has the current record for most consecutive losing seasons as an NBA head coach with the same team, at 4, and Chauncy is about to tie that.

Most team managements would fire Chauncey anyway but let's hope he asks out

I have a weird feeling some idiot team will offer him a deal and he bolts. PHX, as there were whispers of him going there last year, is my bet.

I hope we get Jenkins.

IIRC the Blazers hold an option on Billups for next season at 2M

that would likely be the cheapest they could get any coach for and the Vulcans love cheap

This is correct.

Ok all fronts.

The only way out is if Billups asks out. Otherwise, they’re just kicking this can.

Cronin trades Simons, SRP, and Billups to Miami for Rozier and Erik Spoelstra.

The coaching market has begun.
Taylor Jenkins is a legit coach who values D.
Michael Malone is a winning coach who can piss people off, wanted veterans around Jokic while his GM gave young guys and questionable contracts …

Who’s next?

I think Billups would be insulted to be offered only the TO for next year. That would be 2 years in a row of lame-duck...
If the team only offers that, then I think Billups walks.

If you want my unasked opionin--I have less faith than some that Billups is responsible for the Blazers Top 5 defense in the last 3rd of the season. IMHO, that's mostly because of Camara, Deni, and Clingan playing more...and Ayton, Simons, and Grant playing less.

I think that if Ayton, Simons, Grant all would have played their usual minutes in that span, the Blazers would be bottom half.

The two guys I wanted most for HC are now off the table. Those being Tuomas Lisalo and David Adelman.

I would take Jenkins over Malone. Malone would struggle with a young team imo. Jenkins would have a much better command to connect with a younger team.

I liked how hard Memphis played for Jenkins prior to the Ja disruptions. Injuries hurt, too.

Adelman getting his try-out with Denver hasn’t taken him off the market, yet. He was (reportedly) previously prevented from taking another job with a year left on his contract … but they do have Jokic.

Cronin will offer him a 5 year extension. Chauncey is not going anywhere unless another team poaches him.

Usually, I'm a fan of continuity and Billups has been getting wins out of this roster, BUT...

This team needs some shake up. If Jody's not leaving, and Cronins not leaving, sorry Chauncy

Yeah I think most of us would rather it be the first two and Chauncey as well but secondary to them but 1 out of 3 is better than 0 for 3

Please let him walk! I can't think of any head coach that has screwed up and lost more winnable games in the last minute. He seems like he has no feel for the game and can't seem to call a time out at the appropriate time. :banghead:

Billups to return according to Jaynes sources. I don't know what the Blazer brass sees in him. This might be the first time in the history of professional sports that a head coach has been retained/rehired after 4 straight losing seasons. I don't know of any other case? 4 straight losing seasons seems to be the NBA record for a head coach (of the same team) from what I could find.

1. Cronin (and the rest) need to decide early in the post-season whether to let go (or retain) Billups in order to get the best, new coach. Time is not their friend.

2. Since Cronin did not get trades of Ayton, Simons, and Grant done, Billups had real NBA players to make the game easier for the young guys. And the young guys earned their minutes. It hurt the tank — which sucks — yet the youth matured. Would they have grown MORE with time they hadn’t earned as much or without some stability from veterans? Speculative, IMHO, but Billups has the history of BAD teams on his side.

3.This is Cronin’s summer. I hope Schmitz is a BIG help to him.

Does Jaynes really know anything anymore though? Or is this speculation on his part?

The issue is the years & the money, Billups is going to want guaranteed multiple years at a rate much higher than his league lowest $2nil\year he gets now

Curious if Vulcan is dumb enough to give it to him. Who am I kidding, they are

Also worth considering, now that Cronin has an extension does he want his own coach or does he tie his fate to Billups?

Everyone full of praise for Chauncey for this teams improved play, which he had little to do with

Arrival of Deni
Arrival of DC
Improved play of Camara & Sharpe

Remember for much of the 1st half of the year, 3 of those players were coming off the bench

and of course the good fortune this team had, injuries to other teams, teams blatantly tanking early, teams resting key players against POR…all which made them appear better than they really are

If Cronin resigns Billups, who is a bad game coach and punts on trading away vets (to compete for playoffs) and Billups of course favors those vets and plays them, it is going to be a glorious crap show next year when this team misses the playoffs or gets summarily washed out if a play in

The finger pointing and excuse making will be hilarious and they will deserve every bit of it

Got to ask, if the intention is to resign Billups and that is what Chauncey wants then why not announce it when they re-upped Cronin?

Jaynes is a vet,so I"m sure he does have legit sources. But who knows. Did the Blazers leak the story to make them seem less desperate while they negotiate with someone else?

Can someone find me a case where a pro sports franchise kept a losing coach 5 full-straight years?
