Another completely fair deal.

Wow, I'm surprised there are not more posts in this thread.

I was very vocal about trading Sharp this Las off season. He's shown some signs, hopefully he can show improved consistency moving forward.

Kudos to Cronin on this deal. Sharpe is young enough that he can sign a mega deal on his next contract if he's able to reach his potential.

Kinda got grouped in with the Camara thread since they happened so close together.

Not that I'm complaining, but I'm surprised Sharpe didn't bet on himself. He could have gotten much more next summer as a restricted free agent, when a lot of teams are scheduled to have money under the salary cap. And judging by our team comp and preseason, his counting stats are going to look really juicy this year. Efficiency is another story...

Pulling this Sharpe comment out of the Camara thread.

I'm also fairly curious that he didn't bet on himself. I have to imagine a couple things at play here, he's rep'd by Klutch, they're more connected than any agency in the game. They saw what a drag RFA has become in the current CBA for players with this restriction. There's starting to become very little reason to "play" the RFA game for players and agents.

Sharpe also, from what has been reported by those connected to the league, is a pretty polarizing player to front offices. I think a group like Klutch probably just did the math, they'll know what teams really would be high on him and what the likelihood those teams could offer him the money they want. If the teams that like him are capped out, then the Blazers offer is what it is and there's no benefit in dragging it out into RFA if there's no team(s) out there to start a bidding war.

I love the signing, especially after what Sharpe has shown us in the preseason. He looks ready to take a step forward. It’s a fair deal in the short term that could become a great deal in the long term. Between this deal and Camara, I get the sense players are taking team friendlier contracts because they want to play together. Front office is well on its way to keeping a solid core of young players.

This team is exciting. Let’s go Blazers!

That toumani deal will be a steal.

Don't mind the shaedon deal either, it isnt gonna hurt us. I wonder if theres any options involved but I bet its just 4 years for each

If Deni wants to resign there's a lot of room to do it now once he expires. Got some room to re up clingan eventually as well as scoot possibly if he does well this year

This is a deal for both Camara and Sharpe. Now, lets see what Scoot does this season.

Verdict is out on Deni playing out his contract in portlabd. That contract situation is gonna take some tactfulness otherwise the best option might be to deal him away so we dont lose him for nothing

It was smart for Sharpe to not bet on himself. The upside of getting 5/160 or whatever he could have got in FA next year is not worth the risk of him becoming another Nerlens Noel type situation.

Who knows what type of injury or bad form might prevail on 2025-26, even if he believes that he'll increase his value in the year ahead.

Even after tax, agent fees etc, this 4/90m is absolutely generational wealth by many multiples. He's a smart man to lock in this solid offer from Portland. If he ends up being underpaid from this contract, that just means he'll be signing a big 9-figure deal when he's 26 years old.

If the new cba wasnt part of this equation id say given the chance id probably gamble on myself if I were Sharpe. But it doesnt seem like hed get significantly more unless he has an all star sort of season. Maybe 10 mil more at best but an achiles or acl injury and then its likely 40 million less.

To me this is right about fair value compared to the market, and about the risk I was willing to take on. And fair value is a good place to be given our recent history with jerami grant and now having jrue's contract on the books.

What's that phrase? a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush? I think that applies quite well with Sharpe.

My rule of thumb for these things is if my reaction is "could be better, could be worse" then it's probably a pretty decent deal for both sides. This one seems a pretty decent deal for both sides. If he keeps playing the way he has, this may be slightly on the rich side for what Sharpe brings, but only slightly. If he does blow up into a monster offensive threat or improves his defense some, then he will earn this amount many times over and we'll see a big extension kick in later on.

So I thought Sharpe would get somewhere in line with Jabari Smith, a slight overpay but gambling on him improving over the life of the contract.

Estimated: $20/$21.7/$23.3/$24.9 - Averaging out to $22.5/year - Smith's deal averaged out to $24.4/year. So, a slightly better deal for POR than expected, but still a huge gamble on Sharpe's continued improvement and not plateauing, which is\should be a major concern.

Probably worth the gamble, he is only 23, however,if Sharpe does not markedly improve, this deal will not look so good 2 years from now.

These (Camara\Sharpe) are the first deals that Cronin has inked players to that is in the "reasonable zone" but it does not absolve him of every single major contract overpoay up to this point. Worthy gambles, could backfire (Sharpe in particular) but not unreasonable. So credit to Cronin...

Disagree on this. If Sharpe plays exactly how he's played in his prior seasons and doesn't demonstrably improve, this is still okay money to pay for a 18.5/4.5/2.8 starter...ESPECIALLY in subsequent years when salaries for players will only go up.

I view Sharpe's money as "5th starter" type money, and I think Sharpe even if he levels off as a 22 year old is still a 5th starter on most teams.

I think this is very good value for Sharpe.

What I find interesting is that the general consensus seems to be that paying Camara a 25 year old 20M/year for 4 years is a slam dunk, while paying Sharpe a 22 year old 22.5M/year for 4 years is a risk.

Not saying anyone is wrong...just find it interesting.

Quenton Grimes averaged 14.6 - 4.3 - 3 on 46.7/38.5 FG/3ptFG% and I doubt he sniffs anywhere near the amount Sharpe got. Now Grimes is 25, Sharpe is 23 but 2 years from now if Sharpe has not progressed what is he then? A lesser version of Quentin Grimes? Is that worth $23/$24 mil/year?

Grimes has a a career 3pt FG% at 37.5% - Sharpe is sitting at 33%

Grimes has a career eFG% of 56.3%, Sharpe is at 51.9%

and I agree with you on Camara, this is also a hedge on him improving , if he doesn't, then this deal is not nearly as good...

I think both contracts were great deals.
