Who knows? I sure don't, and I doubt John G does either. I some what trust his eye for talent/prospects, but I have VERY little faith in his connections.

I think we've all been assuming he'd be here, but it's probably not wise to plan for it till it actually happens

Sounds like standard sports double talk. You tell everyone that you're not gonna leave. But when it comes down to it money talks and bull walks.

He wants to play in the NBA. It has been a dream of his, I read. Who knows how much money will be thrown at him, but I thought he already signed a longterm contract with his current team SO with that, I assume that either he comes to portland or keeps his current contract.

And from what I hear, a Euro club can offer him a tremendous amount more money than he would earn on a late first round pick rookie scale contract in the NBA. Nothing is set in stone yet.

But that's only for 4 years. Sergio would make SOOOOOOOOOOOO much more money here later in his career than he could in Spain that it's totally worth it to take a pay cut for 4 years.

But dont you think it would be hard to turn down 40-50 million if it was in your face to take a 48 million dollar pay cut for 4 years to play in a league where you MIGHT have a CHANCE to get a deal that big IF everything plays out the way you would like it to?

Actually, the reason he dropped to Portland was because he had one year left in Spain on his deal and Portland was the only team willing to take him in the first round. After this season, he is a free agent in Europe. In the States the Blazers own his rights.

Come on AZ you are totally over reacting to Giovony's baseless reporting. The sentiment in Vittoria? WTF does that mean?

There is no quote from an inside source, but a handle full of Basque fans who feel that way. They can't even bomb their way to independence, yet somehow their certain Rudy is staying in Spain.

Rudy has already proven to be one of the best players in Europe and his buy out is totally affordable. There is little chance that he is not coming over here next year.

What I did was come across an article that I thought was of interest to regulars on this board. I posted the quote in question, linked the article and then asked if Givony is just talking out his ***.

No over reaction from me unless soliciting debate is over reacting. I would like to know where Givony is getting his info. I think he is full of it, but would like to hear from others. Have they seen or heard any info on Rudy having a change of heart?

I've seen it reported that Sergio has said that in the frequent converstions he's had with Rudy, Rudy has expressed his intention to come over next season.

However, it's also been reported that at least a couple of other European teams are planning on offering Rudy a lot of money to sign multi-year contracts. It sounds like it would be substantially more then a rookie scale contract in the NBA. An extra 5 or 6 million over the next 3 years might be kind of persuasive, so I'm not sure Rudy being here next season is a done deal yet.

Actually, he rejected some big contracts this season after being drafted by Portland (for example, from Barcelona).
The reasons, reported in some media, were that his team (Joventut) would make things easier for him to go to Portland, which probably means a small buy-out.
Others teams would have offered him bigger contracts but with a clause saying: "Ok, if you leave to Portland then you pay $XXXXXX"... Aghhhh everyone wants to make money!!!!!!!! :tooth

that's actually why it seems likely he's coming to the NBA next season. It was reported here that his 'new' Joventut contract had a minimal buyout provision making it easier for him to leave. I know the blazers can contribute some money to a buyout so maybe that's the total buyout amount.

Still, 22 year olds has been known to change their minds in the past, and with an extra few million waiting if he stays in Europe, it's possible Rudy's mind will change. Seems unlikely at this point but still possible.

Am I crazy, or should someone just offer the kid a shoe contract to ease the financial pain of leaving Europe. To be honest, it doesn't even seem that unethical, if at all... Larry Miller, make the call.
