The so-called dunk contest is a joke

This dunk contest reached a new level of absurdity. Dwight Howard's superman dunk wasn't even a dunk. If you don't make it to the rim and throw the ball into the basket, that is called a shot. Yet, after this non-dunk, the commentators and judges went nuts. The contest was decided before it began and Dwight Howard couldn't lose. He couldn't even lose it by shooting the ball in instead of dunking.

what are you talking about?
he should have won it no question. i was very impressed with the dunk, very creative and see how much air time he had on that one?
dwight howard is my new favorite player, but of course next to Brandon Roy

I am with Tauf here. I think the idea of the Superman dunk was to get high enough so that he could literally "throw it down." This year was one of the best ones ive ever seen.

The birthday cake one was awesome, the tip of the glass to himself by Dwight, and like 4 others were ridiculous.

But i agee, Dwight couldnt lose this contest. Especially with fan voting. My roommate bet on Dwight and got 2.3 to 1 odds.

I agree d-train. I was disappointed with the contest this year, you just can't beat the classics. Vince Carter did, Dwight had some good ones last year... other than that no one has came close.

What is a dunk? Is it a dunk if you shot the ball through the rim? He didn't get to the rim. It wasn't a dunk.

Exactly. This isn't the "crazy shot" contest. Plus it didn't even seem like he meant to do that, but instead resorted to it at the last second. Even if he had, it wasn't a dunk.

Ok I though the cupcake dunk was awesome. The replay from behind the backboard was classic. Also now that fire is allowed it opens the door for some interesting possibilities in the future.

"A slam dunk (or simply a dunk) is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air and manually powers the ball through the basket with one or both of his hands, then often grabs the rim shortly after the ball passes through the hoop (a dunk is still being performed if the rim is not grabbed, as long as the athlete powers the ball through the hoop manually). This is a standard field goal worth two points"

Yes, it was a dunk. And if you want a link, go look it up yourself. There's a gazillion dictionaries online that have the definition of a slam dunk.

In case you're confused the bolded part means to push the ball through the rim with a hand or two.

Now then, I haven't gone back and looked closer, but I don't think one or both of his hands was anywhere near the rim. So, by your definition, I do not believe his dunk-contest winning shot was actually a dunk.

That said, my vote goes to D12.

I've never been much into the dunk contest gala.

BUT, I think "The Superman Dunk" by DHoward will go down as one of the most memorable moments this year in basketball.

ASW is all about the fans and DHoward lit up the fans.

Superman was in the building!

And yes it was a dunk.

By this definition, a jump shot from the 3-point line qualifies as a dunk.

Read the part in quotes.

I guess that's not a dunk, either. If Howard's dunk wasn't a dunk, what would you categorize it has? It sure as hell wasn't a layup. It's called a slam dunk because you "slam" the ball through the hoop, which is what Howard did. I think it's pretty clear that it was a dunk.

I agree!!
I posted about it right after Howard did that,
up on the All-Star thread. You agree with me
for once d-tran!! Whats next.. .flying pigs??

Also I talked about how no one has dunked
from the FT line yet in any NBA/ABA dunk
contest. Its a myth. Jordan, Dr. J, Brent &
even Drexler came close but it has yet to
be done. I wanna see someone do it!!!!!!!!

I did enjoy Howard tho with the dunks he
did make. If that superman dunk was
completed I would of gave him a 10.
BUT IT WASNT, so I give him a 7!!

It is what it is. That's the definition from a published dictionary that is widely used world wide. If you don't want to think it's a dunk, then you have your opinion and I have mine. We'll leave it at that.
