Sonics

In trading Kurt Thomas, the Sonics now have 6 first round picks over the next three years.
2008 - Theirs and Phoenix's
2009 - Theirs and San Antonio's
2010 - Theirs and Phoenix's
Their GM who is from the Spurs organization like Pritchard is out-Pritcharding KP. Add those picks to Durant and Green and they are going to be chasing the Blazers in a couple of years.

No, KP beats their GM by miles. I honestly don't think the Allen deal was THAT good and you can't underrated the Roy deal. The boston deal was the deal of the decade because he got not only a star, but a YOUNG star for next to nothing (also factoring the trade with minny of course). Plus, Oden is as good of an aquisition (if not better) than Durant. Essentially, all that Presti's done better than KP is acquiring heavily protected draft picks that won't amount to much once they're usable.

I don't know if I'd say Sam Presti is "out-Pritcharding" Pritchard. I'd say he's just following the model that KP set in rebuilding the Blazers. Build through the draft, dump big contracts and take advantage of teams with cheap owners, like Robert Sarver of the Suns.
Seriously though, what a boneheaded trade that was for the Suns to move Kurt Thomas (a player who was gave the Suns some good defense and above all, was an expiring contract), and 2 future first round picks to the Sonics for nothing more than the TE they got when they let Rashard goto Orlando. I get that you might want to save some salary here and there, but give me a break.
Speaking of questionable moves, I still don't understand why they picked Durant AND Green? As both of those players mature, they will both turn out to be SF's. I don't get why they picked 2 players who will eventually play the same position...

The Sonics had a lot more to work with than the Blazers. KP was good enough to trade Randolph. Thomas is desirable asset for any team this year as he is expiring and can help a team in the playoffs. What he does with the picks is what will really determine how good he is as a GM.

Yeah, true, and definitely agreed on the randolph trade. Many GM's couldn't 1) come to terms to the fact that Randolph should be traded (just ask John Nash and Steve patterson) and 2) get a decent soon to be expiring contract that goes along with our capspace plan for an overpaid, cancerous, player. The Randolph trade was amazing an while I was semi-against it then, it's definitely one of the better trades the Blazers have made in the decade.

It will be interesting to see if anything comes of those three picks, but they are sure better than giving Lewis that god-awful contract. The biggest thing I see is that Durant and Green will get another high pick to play with next year. The West is in win now mode and the Sonics are setting themselves up nicely for a run in a few years.
As I have said before, I really like what Presti is doing up there.

I agree that Presti is doing a good job up north. As other have said I still don't really get the Green pick. I think Presti was trying to go BPA, but both are clearly SFs and nobody wants to be the second coming of the Atlanta Hawks of a few years past.
So far he's no KP, but he's performed well.

First Suns had to pay Sonics two 1st round picks to take Kurt Thomas then a half-year later Sonics trade him for another 1st round pick and a couple decent players. So, Sonics get three 1st round picks for renting Kurt Thomas for 6 months. That is what I call shrewd horse-trading. Presti is the GM Blazers should

No, that's called having a free agent SF that wanted the max and having a team that had the appropriate cap space (Orlando) that gave him the max in a sign and trade. Then taking the gigantic trade exception they had, and getting a big contract from a cheap team (The Suns) and asking for a first round pick in return (the same things the Blazers asked and received in the James Jones trade; except the Sonics could ask for two because the contract they were taking on was five million more than Jones).

well, it will be very interesting to see what they do with those 6 picks, specially 2009 and 2010.

The Shaq trade makes that 2010 Phoenix pick very interesting.
I don't think it has any lottery protection.

I don't think the Suns will be lottery bad by 2010, but they'll certainly be on the decline. If Nash should have a serious injury as he gets old and slows down, that could be a really nice pick for them.
Man, the Suns have made some really stupid moves this year. I mean, potentially franchise crippling stupid moves.
