The 2008-09 Roster
Everyone says we got Von Wafer to make a roster spot for Rudy next year. Does Oden already have a roster spot even though he hasn't played all year and is injured? We're going to have the 12th pick in the draft, assuming we don't stash it in Europe again, that means we'll have to clear a spot for him too, right? So right now we only need to clear one spot or 2?

I'm thinking we'll be trading our 2nd rounder(s) for future picks or throwing them into deals, or drafting Euros... Do we only have one second rounder this year?
I think everyone expects a trade, but if we don't make one, then we'd have to cut someone and only Darius and McRoberts are options there, right? I mean a trade that doesn't mess up our cap room the following year is going to be tricky.

Portland has three 2nd round picks: Memphis, NY and Phoenix. Right now that would be 33rd, 34th, and 54th.
I think it's a good bet that KP will work trade scenarios that either move portland up in the first round draft order or bring in a useful veteran, as well as consolidate the roster. Maybe he can impress us all again and do all three.
IMO I'd rate these players as most likely to least likely to be moved/waived in this order:
Wafer
McRoberts
Jack
Frye
Sergio/Webster
Lafrentz
Miles
If KP finds no interest in Lafrentz this summer and if he's dead-set on cap space in 2009, Lafrentz could become more likely to be moved. But I think KP will want to hold on to him until the trade deadline considering the value of expiring contracts. Same with Miles

Honestly I think KP will use our picks to get not veterans, but near veterans. Bringing more youth into this team is not a good idea. We don't need old guys but we definately need some experience and some proven players on this team. We will have a lottery pick to help us land either a good wing or a good point. I'm sure those deals will include Raef, Jack, Webster... they will be 2 for 1 or 3 for one deals, we'll have plenty of room for Rudy and GO.
Jack, Webster, Raef, and pick for player.
Player/Blake/Rodriguez
Roy/Fernandez
Outlaw/Jones
Aldridge/Frye/McRoberts
Oden/Pryzbilla
That's how I see our roster looking next year, either that or that incoming player will be a wing. I think the team is definately trying to find out if Outlaw can be the SF of the future or not... judging by the last couple of games.

I am sure the club is putting a big effort towards getting Miles to take a medical retirement.
If he does, insurance picks up most of his salary and it comes off the cap and the LT calculation.

If that's the lineup it seem's like we would need to move Mcbob (even though I want to see more of him first) and let Outlaw have 3rd string PF minutes. It will probably take some time for Rudy to adjust to the NBA game so either that starting PG spot is a proven scorer or we need another SG that can score.
Basically, we would need a back up for Roy in case Rudy takes a bit to get used to the pace.
Argue all you want but I still think KP sees the future lineup as:
Roy/Sergio
Rudy/???
Outlaw/Jones
LA/Frye/Outlaw
Oden/Przy

I hope this is true. I'd love for Outlaw to be this teams SF for the future.

I'm hoping for a roster thinning trade. Trades are a lot more exciting than wondering which scrub is going to get cut to make way for Rudy and our first rounder next season.

I think we need to hope the Nets end up in the lottery...supposing we pick at #13 and the Nets around 8 to 10, I think they could draft Mayo for us and trade him along with Hassell (salary dump) for Frye, Jack, the rights to Hibbert and one or two of our 2nd round picks...
Harris/Williams
VC/Jack
RJ/Moute
Frye/Boone
Hibbert/Williams
That's a pretty good team for the east, and they'll likely move VC for more expirings and young pieces.

No, they cannot try to convince him to retire, it's up to miles if he wants to decide to retire. Unless KP is breaking the NBA regulations (which I truly doubt), Miles must make approach the team with the suggestion.

I dont think hes nearly as bad as he used to be. He is actually passing alright. In just about the same amount of time as Martell, hes averaging about the same apg (TO - 1.3 Web - 1.2). While neither are good numbers, nobody thinks Martell is a black hole. He shoots just under 3 shots more per game than Martell as well (TO - 11.4 Web - 8.6). Thats not much of a difference. Webster isnt a black hole either, I'm just saying I dont think Outlaw is that bad anymore. He shoots more, but thats his job. Hes one of he few guys on that team who can create off the dribble. I would be ecstatic if he were moved into the starting lineup next season. That would have to be the longest frontcourt I've ever seen. Outlaw/ Aldridge/ Oden... 3 guys will HUGE wingspans patrolling the paint

I guess by 'effort', he meant not playing him a single minute...

I don't like Outlaw starting. His Asthma makes him expend three or four times the energy on offense then a regular NBA player. Starting him at the three where he has to keep up with some of the most prolific scorers in the NBA will be a huge detriment to his game.
Outlaw is great as a 6th man and thats where he should stay, in the white unit.

I don't think that's a great way to compare them--Webster gives up the ball much more readily when he doesn't have the shot, while Outlaw forces up shots even when he should pass. The results show this (see below).

It's a huge difference--Webster averages two minutes more per game, but verages 30% fewer shots attempted than Travis. On a PER36 basis, Outlaw averages more shot attempts than anyone else on the team, including Brandon, while Webster is 8th on the team.
Webster isnt a black hole either, I'm just saying I dont think Outlaw is that bad anymore. He shoots more, but thats his job. Hes one of he few guys on that team who can create off the dribble.
Just because he can create off the dribble doesn't mean that when the ball gets in his hands more often than not it results in him directly jacking up a shot. It also doesn't mean that this is how he should play, as Travis regularly shoots very high degree of difficulty shots despite open teammates surrounding him.

We'd have a longer frontcourt than your envisioning by playing Manute Bol, but I wouldn't want to do that either. And in no way would I want Outlaw to start. I don't think he's a player that really improves his teammates (the black hole thing again) and he really provides almost nothing other than the ability to jack it up.

agreed outlaw should be a 6th man imo.
Heres my dream scenario.
Mile retires. duh
AND
We make a package to toronto for calderon or ford this offseason since I HIGHLY doubt they can keep both happy with one on the bench.
Jack/Frye/1st for either opens up 1 roster plus darius gone opens another so lets just say ford (who I want more but would take either heh)
Ford/Blake/Sergio
Roy/Rudy
Webster/Jones
Aldridge/Outlaw/McBob
Oden/Przybilla
IR: Raef and 2 players we decide to draft this year or bring over seas freeland or kaponen
