Would this be a Bad Trade? warning: LMA

Post#1 » by Wizenheimer » Sat Mar 15, 2008 1:13 am

I was responding to a guy on the trade board who wanted Memphis to get Oden, webster, frye, Lafrentz & the 13th pick for mike miller, darko, and jason collins.

I proposed one I knew he'd be irritated by...lost self-control for a moment

anyway...assuming memphis landed the 1st pick:

portland trades Aldridge and Webster for Rudy Gay, Mike Conley, and the 1st pick.

Portland drafts Beasley to replace LMA on the frontline and still has their 13th pick to upgrade elsewhere.

I know memphis wouldn't do it....

but what would portland fans think about this one? Blake and Conley at PG's to play with Roy, Gay, Beasley, and Oden?

As much as I love LMA, you have to do that. We get our SF of the future, hopefully our PG of the future, and reluctantly get our future PF (not a beasley fan)

Conley
Roy
Gay
Beasley
Oden

Thats not fair for the other teams in the NBA

Dear god. Memphis would never, ever do that. Its questionable that they would deal Gay for LMA(Althoug, I would also not do such a trade as a Blazer fan)

Just saw that you said Memphis would never do it.

Yes, the Blazers would be high on crack to not do that deal.

I think LMA could be traded for the #1 pick in this draft.

But so would Gay. Gay and LMA probably have around the same high value.

Webster doesn't have as much value as Conley and no where near the value of the #1 pick. So this deal is not even close to realistic for Memphis.

No way you pass that up. Oden, Beasley, and Roy would be an amazing trio to build a team around. So would Oden, Gay, and Roy. So would Oden, Gay, and Beasley. So Would.... You get the point. We have four franchise players as well as a solid point guard and a great shooter. We would probably win the next 10 Championships.

as I said in the OP...I know memphis wouldn't do this. I was just curious about what value we all place on LMA.

If we made the pick, I might consider picking Brook Lopez
of Stanford who is 7' 260 lbs over Beasley who probably
is going to a tweener.

Wiz, I can't believe you took the bait. PTI was belly aching about some proposals from Blazer fans earlier in the week that he felt were over valuing our players and under valuing theirs. He said so, but that wasn't enough for him.

He had to throw this deal out there on the trade board today. The first several posters, non-Blazer fans, all told him he was on crack so he has to ask for Blazer fans to "rip him a new one." A pretty classless move. I PM'd one of the mods about his baiting. I was surprised it made it for 30 odd posts before it was locked, but it was nice to not see Blazer fans over reacting to his ludicrous post.

I saw that thread as well, and I'd say your deal is a little more ridiculous than the one proposed by PTI, but not by much.

Anyway, you'd be crazy not to take that deal, LMA and Gay are really close value wise, and neither team would exchange them (I'd give the edge to Gay for now, but LMA's size means he has the edge long term). The rest is obviously way way way off.

exactly, i don't think many armchair gm's understand the concept of loyalty or team chemistry, they think it's one damn big fantasy team. And for the last time, Beasley is not going to be #1 overall type talent...think Big Dog robinson.

First of all, Beasley is a full three inches taller than Robinson and has a lot better range on his shot. Second of all, there is no way that Beasley is as poor a rebounder in the NBA as Robinson was--his length and aggressiveness and the way he positions himself suggest he will be a very good rebounder in the NBA. Finally, the way Beasley plays inside doesn't resemble Robinson at all, who was a very good offensive player (20.7ppg career average in the NBA, which is better than Clyde Drexler had) but who played a mid-range game. Instead, Beasley's inside game resembles another smaller PF who also happened to be a very, very good rebounder (prior to injuries) in the NBA--Larry Johnson. So while I know it's popular to hate on Beasley, I would easily take a 6'10" Larry Johnson first overall, and he s a #1 overall type of talent.

I won't argue the chemistry issue because I can't say for sure one way or the other on that. But saying that Beasley is somehow not the clear-cut best player available this year at the #1 slot is ridiculous. The only thing that keeps it even arguable are potential off-court issues, not on-court play.

As much as I love LaMarcus (no homo), that's like a must-do deal. Does Memphis have Chris Wallace at the helm again? If you really think about it, Gay or Beasley would be around LMA's value. Saying Webster is equal to Conley and the other player not factoring into Aldridge's value would be unfair.

As I said before, I'd take Brook Lopez of Stanford who is
7' over Beasley who at best is 6'9 who would be a better
fit for us.

I love this deal from Portland's perspective but Memphis obviously says no (as you acknowledged in your opening post). A top pick in the draft + Gay, + conley is the kind of value needed to acquire Oden and LA together (not saying I would, I'm just saying it would take Oden or Roy being added to the mix for Memphis to even consider). If this deal were offered, it would be hard to not say yes.

It's a very bad trade IMO... for Memphis.
