Best strategy for 2008 Lottery Pick
The more I think about it, the less likely I think the Blazers will be picking at #13. I think they are almost guaranteed to trade up in the draft or trade out of the draft completely for a veteran (probably PG) in a package deal with the #13 and some combination of young players.
What do you think is the best value for the pick?

I voted to trade up, as either Bayless, Mayo or Gordon would be perfect for this team and I'm convinced one of them can be the missing piece for us. I think Gordon would be the most likely candidate as he will probably drop the lowest unless he has strong pre-draft showings, Mayo and Bayless will IMO go Top 5. If we can move up a few spots we should be able to get Gordon and I think he would be a great fit alongside Roy, as he can score at will and would be able to handle the ball in bursts, and defend PG's, which is what we need at the point. A 3 guard rotation of Gordon, Roy and Rudy would have us set at every position basically, with Blake and Sergio backing up.

+1
I think Gordon would be the best fit, and possibly the most attainable. I'm not opposed to seeing a veteran PG being brought in either though, would be good to have an experienced vet set up the offense and show the youngsters how it's done.

well, it could all depend on who is available at #13 (if that's the spot the blazers will have).
and also how much would it cost the blazers to move up, because i honestly think that the players that could be dealt are martell, jack, sergio, outlaw & frye plus some picks and maybe even some of the euro players the blazers have.

it's the question of the summer right now, maybe even more then if Rudy is coming over.
Obviously, a 25-27 year old veteran PG would be best. He would help immediately, and also fit into long-range solutions. The trouble is, those type of PG's are a rare commodity. Several teams besides Portland want one, and the teams that have them won't be giving them up easy, if at all.
Portland could probably get TJ Ford, but I don't think they'd have much interest in him, his health, or his contract.
The only hope for getting Calderon is if he plays for his QO next season and that ain't likely. NJ won't be moving Harris.
In any event, I have a hard time believing that any combination of the 13th pick/Outlaw/webster/frye/jack/kaponen is going to fetch portland a good, young, veteran PG.
Moving up in the draft is probably a better bet. But that won't be easy either. I could certainly be wrong about this, but I think the only way portland moves up more then 3 or 4 spots at most, is if they do one of two things: trade Aldridge, or trade Lafrentz's expiring for bad contract(s). They won't be trading Aldridge so the question becomes will the player they get with the higher pick be worth taking a major chunk out of 2009 cap-space? Difficult to say. For one thing, we don't even know yet how many of the top rated players will stay in school another year. And even if portland drafted a good PG, chances are pretty good it would take him 2-4 seasons to become a good player...like it did Devin Harris and Monta Ellis.
I have serious doubts that portland would get much of an upgrade over Blake with the 13th pick, so trying to move up seems a better choice then staying there. And the 13th pick isn't going to be much of a reason for a team to trade a PG better then Blake.

Where is win the lottery, draft Derick Rose or OJ Mayo and be merry?
Forgive me for screwing up the vote, but I really would just want Portland to pursue options 1 and 2 at the same time before falling back on option 3. I would try using that pick plus some guys like Outlaw, Sergio, Frye, Jack, Freeland, Kopponen, second round picks, cash etc to see what I could get either up in the draft or as a young vet. Devin Harris is one of the first that come to mind, but maybe even a Rajon Rondo (obviously not all of those assets would be moved).
I also would probably do some fishing for a young vet SF. Granger of course it the first to come to mind, and sadly Deng won't be movable come draft time. But maybe something in that neighborhood. I'm not saying that Portland necessarily will have the goods to get a deal done, but if not you can fall back to the draft.
At that point I'd hope they push incredibly hard to get into the top 6.
I'd have to think the best value in terms of assets given up vs received will come in the draft. I don't see the established guys coming easily.

DJ Augustin.. Get him.. The only PGs I would take over him are Rose and Mayo. Id put Bayless close to him. I love Gordon, but I still have doubts as to whether he can handle to PG duties in the NBA. I know Roy handles the ball alot but its not like he takes the ball up every time. Blake or Jack usually do.

As some of you have pointed out, it's a very, very Dynamic decision. In that the variables are changing all the time. There is really no way to know what the best decision is until draft day.
I only saw Gordon lay an egg in his last game...probably not fair to judge him on that, but thorougly unimpressed.
Mayo has turned his season around somewhat, but there are still ? marks. The Blazers would probably have to give up quite a bit to get him.
After watching all of the guards at the top of the draft, I don't really consider any of them to be "can't miss" prospects that are ready to come in and play. IMO every one of them is going to have a large adjustment period into the NBA game as a point guard.
I'd be content to try and get either of the UCLA guards. I think that Collison could be very good in 3 years.
I think that we can do better with a combination of Outlaw, Martell, Frye, Sergio, #13, and other assets. It might just take a bit of patience.
All that being said I think KP is going to try his best to move up.

I hate these polls that ask if we want to move up in the draft. Of COURSE we want to move up, that's not a question, the question is can we do so without giving up one of the big 3? That doesn't seem likely.
I don't want to trade out of the draft, we're unlikely to get a very good player by doing so, and it will just hurt the cap space plan later on.
I'm happy just to stay at the draft. Trust KP people. There's almost always a stud in that 13-18 range, KP can find him. Take a look:
This year: Al Thornton, 14th pick
Last year: ok nobody.
2005: Danny Granger, 17, McCants 14
2004: Josh Smith: 17 (I won't count Al Jefferson since he's HS)
2003: David West: 18
2002: Nobody
2001: Richard Jefferson: 13, Zach Randolph: 19
So the point is, you can get a very valuable player picking at 13 if you have a good scouting department. We all think we have that, so let's trust it.

For what it's worth, Quick was on 1080 last night talking about what the Blazers might do this summer, and he expects the Blazers to make another hard push for Jose Calderon. This probably won't have any effect on our lottery pick as Calderon would have to be S&T'd to Portland, but I suppose it isn't out of the realm of possibility for the Blazers to move whoever they take at #13 to get Calderon.
Doug Collins put it best last night, the Blazers really need a PG who can push the tempo and help make this team faster. Roy can run the team at PG when it's a half court situation.
As for who's in the draft, I really don't think Gordon would be a great fit. Like others have mentioned, his PG skills just aren't high enough. Bayless and Mayo would both be better, and the more I've watched/read about Augustin, the more I like him, but he's still a very small PG.
Derrick Rose is obviously the best option for us, but unless lightning strikes twice for the Blazers, we ain't gettin' him.

It would take more than lightning to get the top pick. Getting the pick from the 13th is unprecidented. There was precident for the sixth record getting the top pick.
I think you will see a lot of guys take their qualifier this year. It's in their best interest. Next year like 10 teams will have cap room, so players will make a lot more money next year than they will this year.

No one mentioning Darren Collison? He's a pure PG, a lockdown defender, he has range out to the three-point line and he's absolutely killing it in the NCAA tournament. What more could we possibly need out of our PG? And we wouldn't even have to trade up for him.
If we do trade up for anyone, I like O.J. Mayo best of all. If we stay put, Collison should be our man.

Will Collinson's defense translate well into the NBA though? At 6'1", 170lbs, he's a fairly small PG by NBA standards.

I vote none of the above. I say we wait for more information to assess our options and for better options to arise. I don't know yet how valuable the #13 pick will be and I don't know which veterans from other teams will be on the trading block. I also need more information about the Miles situation because that will have a huge impact on our trading options if we have additional cap space that would give us the option to acquire salary commitments that extend into 09/10. I don

I'd love to pick up the UCLA pair of Collison and Love... and I think we have the pieces to add a 2nd mid-late lotto pick w/o giving up too much. If I could land those two for Outlaw, Frye, Jack and our 13th pick I'd be ecstatic.
Blake / Collison / Sergio
Roy / Rudy
Webster / Jones
Aldridge / Love
Oden / Pryzbilla
Sure I'd love to get Mayo or Rose, but I don't think they're as viable of an option as landing Love and Collison(or Augustin)... I also know many of you are in love with Outlaw, but I don't really see him fitting as well in the future as Webster. If I could move Outlaw and our peripheral pieces(Jack/Frye) to solidify our PG and backup big for the next 7-8 years I'd take the chance and run. I don't expect Love to be an all star, but his smarts and toughness and work ethic are definately there and good enough to be an excellent role player in the right situation.
About the only way I'd want to move Webster is if we were landing a good SF prospect like Gallinari or Batum. I'd prefer Gallinari, but Batum has alot of promise as well.
I wonder what kind of 2nd pick we could land with a package of Jack, Frye and our 2009 1st. I imagine something around our pick isn't exactly out of the question.

Calderon is the best option for us. Period.
The Blazers will never be a top tier team without a top tier point guard. It's that simple. If there is a way to get Calderon without giving up Roy, Aldridge, and Oden we need to do it.
If we can manage to keep the 13th pick while we're at it, draft Kevin Love.
Calderon/Blake/Sergio
Roy/Fernanez
Outlaw/Webster/Jones
Aldridge/Love/Frye
Oden/Pryzbilla
That's my dream team for next season, realistic dream team.

Just because Quick thinks portland will make a big push for Calderon doesn't mean Toronto will cooperate.
I can't see the blazers having any chance at calderon in a trade unless they send LMA to Toronto. And I don't think that's likely.
The best chance Portland has at calderon is if he really wants to play with fernandez (or just hates toronto) and decides to play for his 3 million QO next season and become UFA in 2009. That's not likely either.

So in that dream, are we trading Jack and Raef for Calderon? Because thats all that you have missing in that depth chart
To get Calderon were going to have to include some combo of Sergio/Webster/Outlaw/Frye/ rights to our draft pick, and on top of it all, hope he makes it clear that this is where he wants to go and somewhat forces Toronto's hand in a S&T. Him being a RFA makes things very difficult
