2006-07 season: Felton is an ace at getting to the basket; it's just a shame the Bobcats can't bring in a relief pitcher to make the shot once he gets there. He's proven himself to be among the worst finishers in the game, constantly making dazzling drives and then botching the layup at the end.

For the year, Felton hit 43.8 percent of his shots in the immediate basket area; he and Derek Fisher are the only two players to make under 45 percent in each of the past two seasons. But unlike other players who shoot poor percentages from close-in (Fisher, Jannero Pargo, Matt Carroll, Ben Gordon, and Luke Ridnour, to name a few), Felton takes a ton of shots near the rim -- more than half his attempts have come from there each of the past two seasons.

Obviously, with the bulk of his attempts coming on shots he has trouble making, his overall shooting numbers are poor. Felton made only 38.4 percent from the field, undermining what otherwise was a very solid second pro season. He created a lot of shots, had decent assist and turnover numbers, defended competently, and hit enough 3s for defenses to respect his shot. He just couldn't make a layup.

Scouting report: Felton's penetration skills are his primary asset. He is very quick off the dribble, can go with either hand and is effective pushing the ball in transition. He has good court vision, too, and might be able to indulge that part of his game more now that he has a few teammates who can score. While Felton has a reputation as a poor outside shooter, he's actually done decently from outside the past couple seasons. Instead, finishing at the rim has been his big problem.

Defensively, it would be nice if he were an inch or two taller, but Felton does a good job keeping opposing guards in front of him and doesn't appear to have any glaring weaknesses. Opponents rarely attacked him since some of his teammates were such easy targets, but that might change this season.

2007-08 outlook: Felton figures to take another step forward this season, as even if his finishing troubles persist, his outside shot should continue developing. The other reason to like Felton this year is that he's likely to be trying to finish much less often -- the Bobcats have added enough scoring that he can focus on the drive-and-dish rather than driving for his own offense.

Brevin Knight's departure guarantees him a starting job and a likely 40 minutes-a-night gig. The Bobcats didn't even bother looking for a backup (well, unless you count Jeff McInnis), so obviously Felton's job is safe. All told, if you're looking for a breakout player this year, you could do a lot worse.
