Rudy will be #5 still, and Bayless will be 0. I always dig players who wear 0, except Arenas.

I thought this was about Rudy Gay not wanting the word "Gay" on the back of his jersey. I forgot what forum I was at.

Isaiah Thomas had his whole name on the back of his jersey one year.

It's a semi-common thing for Spanish, Portugese or Latin American soccer players to go by their first name, probably because many players share the same surname. It has the effect of making the athlete resemble a child, which I think is part of their relationship to the athlete, that the athlete is a prodigious child. Think of Pele.

I had forgotten about that. The back of his jersey looked like a big mess. Hilarious.

Depends on where they're from, but in general it's true that the surname comes first in Chinese. Yao's given name is "Ming," not "Yao." Yi's given name is "Jianlian," not "Yi." Ha's given name was "Seung-jin," not "Ha," so it applies frequently to Koreans as well. The big exception in pro sports is Ichiro Suzuki, where in Japan he goes by Suzuki Ichiro.

I see what you're getting at. Tho, in Spain Rudy wore Rudy on the back of his jersey? I wonder what he would prefer?

Nene (Hilario) has just his first name, but I think he may have dropped his last name altogether.

The point, at least in Spain, is this: Fernández on a jersey sounds ridiculous.
Fernández is like Smith in USA. And calling someone Fernández, Pérez, García, etc.. (all very common surnames) sounds like how office workers used to call each other 30 years ago in the office. Sounds like a joke.
That's why, for example, Raúl González (famous soccer player for Real Madrid) has Raúl on his jersey.
When the surname is not common, like for example, Gasol, you can use it and it doesnt sound weird like Fernandez, Perez. etc...

Now I was thinking of Raül López who played like two or three years for Utah and he had López on his jersey (López is even more common than Fernández).

How common a name is isn't very important tho. How common is Suing Jin? or Jian Lian? I think it's honestly about player prefference. If they insist on their first names then I doubt a team would deny them the request. That all being said, I think he wears Fernandez. He wants to embrace the NBA game and last name on the jersey id s part of it.
