Howard is not as good as Ron and he's not even a whole year older so there's no point to making that trade.

The Dallas Morning News -
One way for the Mavericks to jump start their roster would be to acquire forward Ron Artest from Sacramento, and Rick Carlisle isn't opposed to coaching the former Pacer once again, according to The Dallas Morning News.

When asked about coaching Artest again during an appearance on ESPN's 103.3 Galloway and Company this afternoon, Carlisle had this to say:

"Of course," said Carlisle. "This guy is one of the real difference-makers that we have in this league. He's had one all-star year; that's when he played for me. I've had a chance to reconnect with Ronnie a couple times over the last couple of years. I love him and I love his family, so yeah. This guy was one of the most physical, intimidating players that I've ever seen at the small forward position, so he'd be a player that any team would want to have."

Well, perhaps not (in relation to Carlisle), but who knows how much this means in relation to trading Artest for Howard

A little bit surprising to me (about him playing for Carlisle again), but that's good to know in general that they're still good with eachother.

I still wouldn't trade Ron for Howard.

Would you trade Ron for JHo and pick?

Dallas has no pick this year, and I don't know about for next year's if I would.

I'd be interested in:

Artest -> Mavs

Howard -> 3rd team

Pick and/or young talent -> kings

However, on the contrary...

DALLAS -- Rick Carlisle is ready to let Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks run. And run.

And run some more.

"When you play with Jason Kidd, you have to open it up," Carlisle said Wednesday. "Our wing guys are going to have to get conditioned to really run. The thing Jason Kidd does better than probably any point guard in the league is push the ball ahead."

Carlisle emphasized his ready-to-run mentality in the opening statement at his news conference. He also stressed that while more fun, "it's a lot of work, a lot of sweat."

Carlisle added that he plans to keep the defensive core established by predecessor Avery Johnson, prompting a whisper of "That's cool" from Dirk Nowitzki, who was sitting with the media to hear what his new coach had to say.

"We've got to be passionate and vigilant about what Avery [started] here," Carlisle said.

Carlisle also was planning to have dinner with Josh Howard and may travel to North Carolina for more time with Howard and Jerry Stackhouse, whom Carlisle coached before in Detroit.

"This is not about me coming in here with my style," Carlisle said. "This is about fitting the style to the personnel."

His track record demands respect: A career mark of 281-211, with a Coach of the Year award and consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference finals, once with Detroit then with Indiana the next season. He's made the playoffs in five of his six seasons, getting fired by the Pacers after his lone flameout in 2007. He spent this past season working for ESPN.

This will be his first time coaching in the West. He arrives with the Mavericks getting older and the competition getting tougher. Dallas extended its streak of 50-win seasons and playoff berths to eight in a row, but both came down to the final weeks.

Nowitzki turns 30 next month and Kidd is 35, plus going into the final year of his contract. About half the roster spots are open, but the Mavericks already are over the salary cap, limiting the kind of moves they can make. Dallas also gave up its first-round pick in the Kidd trade

I'd say with the running style that will be implemented, Howard is probably going to be a main piece to that. Carlisle planning to go to dinner with Howard shows that, as well.

I also think Rick would get Howard back to the more balanced Josh Howard from previous seasons. In the way of consistent defense and rebounding, and paint-oriented-first scoring.

Obviously they wouldn't do Dirk at C and Ron at PF, because that is a significant downgrade defensively.

Also there is talk that Dallas will look to use a significant deal of the MLE on former key Mav defender, DeSagana Diop this summer. Obviously Diop being a serious loss up front defensively in the Kidd trade.

Ron wouldn't be quite as perfect of a fit as he would have been before the Kidd trade and before Avery got fired (at which point he would have been an absolutely picture perfect fit), but he still would bring a big dose of what they need.

Would Sacramento be interested in Ron Artest for T.J. Ford?

I'm thinking a three team trade between Dallas, Sacramento, and Toronto would go something like this:

Dallas Gets:
Ron Artest

Sacramento Gets:
T.J. Ford

Toronto Gets:
Josh Howard

What do you think?

Terrible, even with a pick it sucks. TJ Ford has John Salmons type value, not Ron Artest value.

trade

i would hate to see the kings get howard, ford or calderon i think none of the 3 are a good match for the kings the only way i want the kings to get involved in a deal with those players involved ids with a 3rd team where the other team will get any of those players !

we dont need howards issues
we dont need fords 1 injury away from having nor career and have to be burdened with his contract not to mention with his years remaining on it !
calderon i see not fitting in his offensive game is pretty good but he has absolutely no defense thats not to say he is any worse than what we have but why pay more for him and give him a bigger contract when you can pay beno for a little less or draft a point guard !

If we are to trade for a point guard we better get a serious upgrade at that position not someone who is slightly better or no better than what we already have not to mention having to pay more money for a slightly better player !

petrie would be smart not to aquire any of those 3 ! :wavefinger:
