As a photographer, I can tell you that you should never use a photo like this to judge height...not even relative height. The perspective of a low-angle photo with a telephoto lens will always bee skewed.
I'm not sure if he has "grown", but he has toned over the summer. He has put on muscle mass and taken off fat.
