Assistant Coaches

Clippers assistant Eyen may be headed to Sacramento
6:16 PM, June 19, 2009

It appears likely that longtime Clippers assistant coach Jim Eyen will join Paul Westphal's staff in Sacramento.

Westphal was hired earlier this month by the Kings.

The well-liked and highly respected Eyen has been an assistant on Coach Mike Dunleavy's staff not only with the Clippers but when they were with the Lakers and Bucks.

It could be the first of several off-season moves involving the Clippers coaching staff. An evaluation period is ongoing, as a whole host of contracts expire at the end of this month.

Rumor has it Bryan Gates of the Idaho Stampede and Scott Roth of the Bakersfield Jam (formerly an assistant with the Mavericks, Grizzlies and Bucks) are finalists for the third assistant with the Sacramento Kings. I'm not sure if there are other candidates for this spot, but I'm pulling for these two, as they are both are definitely deserving.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported yesterday that the head coach of the Idaho Stampede, Bryan Gates, "is expected to be a strong candidate for a spot on the staff."

I don't know how much to read into this quite yet, but I do know that Gates and new Kings coach Paul Westphal share the same agent, along with another rumored assistant candidate, Mario Elie.

This is great for Coach Gates, as he won the D-League coach of the year award for the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons, and we thought he probably should have taken home this past seasons award as well.

Thanks for these. The only thing I've seen so far regarding the assistant coaches is that Terry Porter won't be one of the assistants. I like the idea of bringing in Mario Elie and Bryan Gates sounds like a good choice as well. I really don't know much about the others.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

I like the idea of getting a guy that has been a good coach in the D-league.

I remember seeing a behind the scenes thing on NBA TV a while back and Gates was featured in it. He seemed like a nice guy.
