+1

Thats the bottom line regarding Evans.
Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

I would say that Evans is pretty damn untouchable right now.

Fair enough. Everyone except Evans. That's kinda what I meant, I thought it was obvious.

Also, how many people here are SICK and TIRED of Beno and Martin missing so many games due to "mysterious" injuries? I swear, if you combined the number of games our starting PG/SG missed last season, it probably led the league (behind Washington, cuz of Arenas ;) )! I'm tired of having small, thin players in the backcourt, who are TERRIBLE at playing defense, especially defense against the 3 point shot. I'm also tired of seeing players just run into the lane for an easy layup, because our backcourt is too WEAK to do anything about it. Evans will be a star for this team, count on it!

I must say: today, I know what it feels like to be a Jets fan. It's not a good thing.

Rubio WILL NOT be the best player in this draft, let alone the best point guard. I just don't see his game translating to the NBA. He will be easily defended and won't be able to get away with what he did in the Spanish leagues and Olympics. I don't wanna hear how he did in the Olympics because the Olympic game is more suited to international style of play. Rubio lacks athleticism and will get bullied on defense, he is guarding WAY better athletes in the NBA than he was in the Spanish league. He lacks a jump shot so teams will back off and dare him to shoot. People need to stop buying into the hype machine known as Ricky Rubio aka the PG version of Darko Milicic. Plus his situation is being handled horribly and I would want no part of that!

Here are some of the national media grades of the draft.

Scott Howard-Cooper, SI.com
Grade: B
They just set themselves up for years of comparison -- Tyreke Evans, the pick, vs. Ricky Rubio, the pass -- not to mention decades of abuse if it goes bad. But the Kings were not the only team that would have made the same tough call. In fact, there is a good chance they would have taken Jonny Flynn over Rubio at No. 4 had Evans been gone. Point guard was the obvious position problem and point guard was addressed, with Evans and the Sergio Rodriguez trade with the Trail Blazers. Evans is not a natural playmaker, so the risk is obvious. Forward Omri Casspi, the 23rd pick, is willing to play in Israel another season if the Kings want to save the money. Washington power forward Jon Brockman will go from No. 38 to being a fan favorite, if he makes the team, just on his demolition-derby style of play.

Chad Ford, ESPN
Grade: B+
I'm a little split on what to give the Kings.

On the one hand, I really liked their draft. Evans is a talented guy and one of the most NBA-ready guards in the draft, a terrific, physical slasher who knows how to score. Casspi is tough as nails with a high-energy game. Brockman is a lumberjack in the paint and will knock heads with anyone. Put these three draft picks together with the acquisition of Andres Nocioni in February, and you can no longer call the Kings soft.

On the other hand, I think the Kings chose the safest route, picking now over the future. Ricky Rubio was a better fit than Evans, who is a not a point guard -- he has a scorer's mentality, and Sacramento already has a star shooting guard in Kevin Martin.

The Kings felt Rubio was too far away, too much of a risk. Compared to Evans, he might be. But in the coming years, Rubio might make them wish they had grabbed him while they could.

Kelly Dwyer, Yahoo.com
Score: 8 out of 10 (that would be a B in my book)
There's nothing actually wrong with any of these selections, but on a team that can't rebound to save its life, Blair would have helped.

Evans has huge upside, Casspi can play and was much-bandied about heading into the Draft, and even Brockman might contribute given a good summer, but you're still left wanting with this team. Wanting, maybe, Ricky Rubio and DeJuan Blair. Time will tell.

Tony Mejia, Pro Basketball News
Grade: A
Quietly, the Kings had a brilliant draft. In passing on Rubio in favor of Tyreke Evans, Geoff Petrie and his staff got a player more likely to contribute immediately and equally capable of growing into a star. Omri Casspi and Jon Brockman add an element of toughness the Kings have been badly missing, while Sergio Rodriguez will contend with Beno Udrih for time at the point right out of the gate. Without spending money it doesn't have, Sacramento got deeper via a few promising pieces.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

I think if we're talking how safe a pick would be, Flynn would have been the safest pick. I think Tyreke and Ricky could very easily never be the players their teams envision. Although I will say that I think it's more likely that Ricky completely busts than Tyreke. Tyreke will certainly at least have a place in the league for years to come.

Agreed. I think people here have been complaining how 'boring, methodical, deliberate and safe' Petrie plays his picks MOST of the time.

Well he SWUNG for the fences with Evans. Flynn will be a Jameer Nelson level PG for years to come. I think it's a virtual lock. I REALLY like Flynn. But Evans, he could be Dwayne Wade level as his ceiling. He's just really got that much talent. He's already better than Salmons, and I really like Salmons. So a likely scenario is a step down from Wade and a step up from Salmons. I'd put that with a Brandon Roy caliber player. I think he can be that good.

I had my internet connection out in my house, so I can't comment anything during draft night yesterday.

So yeah, the Evans selection over Rubio was surprising to me. Because I actually thought the "smokescreens" were real but I was wrong. The Kings did have legitimate concerns about Rubio. And I kinda wanted Rubio over Evans for a while but Evans was a very close second though. I do believe that he has one of the most (if not, the MOST) potential in this draft. So, I won't deny that. I think he will fit pretty solidly with the Kings. Well, more specifically with Martin.

I like the Casspi pick.

I don't really know about Brockman but he seems to feel a need for the Kings though. And he went to Washington! Just like Spence! haha

Overall, I like the draft by the Kings. I give it a B+/A- grade.

Well, Realgm gave us a D+ (lowest grade out of all the teams), and a "Bad draft" in the other review. This is kind of similar to last year, so I will keep the faith in Petrie and wait till next year to see how it pans out.

^^To be brutally honest, I have never been impressed with this site's writing staff's ability to analyze the Kings. I'm just going to leave it at that.

Nice press conference with Jon and Tyreke. A lot of people are posting how worthless that pick on Jon was, but I am positive he'll be a fan favorite in no time. Jon said Spencer called him about five seconds before he was picked and told him he was his rookie! Hahaha!!

They had us taking holiday at 4 in their day-of mock draft... Those guys aren't the best. Really, none of these analysts can truly predict what will happen, and in all honestly, anyone outside of God cant! Who knows if someone gets injured or decides to go to the bajamas with ricky williams and smoke some grass. There are just a lot of variables, and I don't care AT ALL what these guys say, because it means absolutely nothing.

I give Petrie a C, it could go to an A though.

I don't like the Evans pick and I think the Kings messed up in the days before the draft. What many people around here thought were smokescreens was actually fact but it should've been kept under wraps. So they could sell that #4 pick to the Wolves better.

The move here was to flip spots with the Wolves and come away with Love, Brewer etc. Then, you could've picked Evans anyway. Me myself I would've preferred Curry or Flynn but Evans was his man, I just say get your man and a little more especially when you had a willing buyer.

I don't like the Casspi or Brockman. I keep hearing about this toughness crap. Well, I find it hard to believe that Casspi is any tougher than Sam Young or Demarre Carroll. Two tough as nails SF who can defend and are skilled. I know Brockman is no tougher than Jeff Adrien.

So for me it was a mixed bag........Time will tell

I literally don't even see how it is possible to give us a D+

I think a C is the lowest you can go with this draft

Return to Sacramento Kings
