The starters definitely came out of the gate dead. They depend on Tyreke's penetration and dishing ability, and Reke wasn't able to do the things he usually does because of the injury. He had no lift when attacking the rim and on his jumpshot. Mason and May looked like crap.

Thankfully, it appears that Spencer Hawes has arrived.

Kevin's 49 points aside (and make no mistake he played his heart out today), Spencer has to be given the game ball for this game. Today was a flash of what the future could look like with Spence. The stats were gaudy for sure (21/11/7, near triple double) but just the way he looked in this game was truly magnificent. He was simultaneously the anchor of the defense and the hub of the offense; challenging shots at the rim, hedging the pick and roll nicely, and overall being a nuisance (to Gasol especially) with his length while at the same time managing the game from the high post, finding cutters, hitting midrange jumpers (quick note to Spence: your range is 17 ft. Stop shooting threes), and (wait for it...) ATTACKING IN THE POST. I don't think I've seen Spencer so aggressive in the post before, and I would actually have liked to see the Kings go to him more when it was apparent that Gasol could not stop him down there. All in all, second straight 20/10 game from the most talented big man on the roster. We want more, Spence!

Beno again showed flashes of that talent which he does every now and then. There are times when he completely dominates games, and this was one of them. Enjoy this look from Beno, we might not see it for another few weeks or so. It was especially timely considering that Tyreke was down with injury this game.

I'm still super impressed with Omri, the guy plays with his heart on his sleeve the whole time. But I don't see star potential in him right now, just a super active, smart, nuisance like roleplayer; kind of like a rich man's Noc. Speaking of Noc, he played a very Nocioni-like game today. May and Mason were crap, and HOLY CRAP K9 sighting. Would have liked to see Brockman more instead of KT.

And lastly, Kmart... just an incredible scorer. Mayo could not guard him at all. Scored everywhere, passed well, and also attacked the glass nicely. Defense is still lacking, but he was the one consistent weapon out there tonight, and 49 points is 49 points.

Westphal has officially won my trust as coach. For the first time literally since Adelman, a diagrammed play in crunch time was run perfectly. And good decision not to force Tyreke out on a bad ankle, stuck to his horse in Beno and it paid off. Nice first win, coach, hopefully the first of many.

Very strong post. I especially agree about Westphal. Like I said in earlier threads, the team just seems so much more well-organized than it has in the past. It feels so much more coherent--like it's a real team, or something. It's still very early and any real judgments should be taken with a grain of salt, but it certainly feels like Westphal is far and away the best coach we've had since Adelman.

Spencer played like a man against the Grizz!

Holding down the post on the defensive end, and running the offense from the high post. It was beautiful to see him finding the right guy for shots, and cutters, and making offensive plays.

Man! I missed the game! I try to watch the game on replay (I saw the score, so I'm happy haha) It seems like almost everyone played well today (esp. Martin, Beno, Casspi and Hawes). Evans' ankle seems not to be 100%.

Nice win!

Kmart put on quite a show. He has very impressive basketball IQ and shooting touch.

playing with an ankle injury has a way of making a player run a lot slower than usual.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

My thoughts exactly. You kinda discredit yourself when you bring up the exact reason he was running slow.

Everyone was screaming that hawes was scum and that he is now a bust, then he flirts with a triple double against a solid front court... We need to calm down a little bit and put this team in perspective. No one talked about how badly we got beat on the boards, no one has looked at the fantastic assist to turnover ratio... I mean, Kevin and Omri had great games, but there are more important things to talk about.

Dont you dare lump me into that group. I've easily been one of hawed biggest supporters even admist the early struggles.

LOL at the 10 point play, I heard that...

and what are you smoking?? SERIOUSLY, as much as I HATE Peja, him in his prime he WAS A MVP CANDIDATE ONE YEAR (FINISHED 4th!!!) Casspi is good and all but PLEASE DONT EVER SAY THAT AGAIN! Casspi WILL be compared to Peja, he WILL be a better defender than Peja, but his shot will not be as good as Peja's was... MAYBE in a few years you could compare the two but to say Casspi as a rookie is better than Peja in his prime is just idiotic

The game was amazing and it was the first time the KINGS brought some excitement, and showed some toughness and maturity. Hawes and Udrih were really good finally, Martin was awesome, Evans can't say anything about him he is injured. Great game, great win... but LETS REMEMBER THIS, IT IS THE GRIZZLIES WE'RE TALKING ABOUT!!! We are in their class as far as how good our team is.... we can run with those teams, so I'm not getting my hopes up for anything, but nevertheless, a quality win for the first time in a looooooong time

True. But ti me the most impressive thing was the way the fire & passion with which they played, and how they played together as a team. They seemed to trust each other, and the hustle was outstanding. They were outsized with Randolph down low, but they stilll scrapped which was impressive to me.

Perhaps I did go a little overboard, and Casspi may not be able to shoot as well as Peja and maybe he never will, but in just his fourth game, he already gives so many things that Peja never did, i.e. TOUGHNESS and decent defense. He has a lot of talent, and that much can't be denied.

I don't see any comparrison between Peja and Casspi. Two totally different players.

I don't forsee Casspi ever being the pure scorer or shooter like Peja. He does alot of other things very well.

His stat line last night was awesome.
15 pts, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, & 2 blocks. Not bad for a 21 year old rookie's 4th game.

Casspi is playing very solid...and to think majority of you guys wanted him to stay overseas because of the "logjam at the 2/3 spots" :?
Smills91 wrote:You guys are idiots....
If you sleep on Beno, he can drop 30/10 on you.

^Shall remain until this happens

Great post! Just wanted to piggy back on your comment that's bolded. Great lines bytheway about anchor of the D and Hub of the O. That's what I envision Hawes basically being, the Vlade Divac of this team.

Hawes was himself last night. I think he just needed some extra time to get his stride going. He may be one of those players that starts slow to begin the season, but he was fabulous tonight.

Casspi's won me over. He's the real deal. He's going to be our starting SF for years to come. I don't see superstar by any means, but later in his career, he may very well sneak into an all-star game or two a la Hedo Turkoglu. He reminds me of a more aggressive Hedo at that same age.

Beno was vintage Beno. IF he can pull this off more consistently, we have a GREAT guard rotation between Martin, Evans and Beno.

The thing this team needs is a back-up 7 footer. Two options I see: Kenny Thomas for Mark Blount(expiring for expiring, he's banished in Minny and his agent is trying to find a team for him.) And then something based around Donte Greene, maybe for someone like Sean Williams?

We need a reserve that can come in and be a defensive force behind Spence(as he should/will be starting soon).

If we can find that last piece, this team could get up to the 25 win mark, and I WANT to see that progress, rarely do teams make HUGE jumps in wins(without DRASTIC changes)-, so I want to get into that 25-30 win total as the goal, and draft well, sign well and trade well moving forward so that next year we can make the playoffs. I want this year to be our final trip to the lottery for a LONG LONG TIME.

Last night's game was an inspiring win against the lowly Grizz, and us fans will take it any way we can. Don't need to mention any specifics since they've been pretty much talked about by the regulars on these boards...I'm just really excited about Casspi like the rest of you. Glad Spencer showed up, I knew he would eventually, now he's just got to build upon the success last night and keep it up. GO KINGS!!!
can we just get a new arena already...

This game was awesome. I had a lot of fun. Martin carried us the entire game and Casspi is looking like a solid pick
