Marc Spears from Yahoo! Interview on KHTK

Post#1 » by ICMTM » Fri Mar 19, 2010 10:26 pm

Did anyone catch this the other day? He was interviewing with Kayte and (I think) Jason Ross. Anyhow a couple of things he said that were of interest:

1. The Kings aren't far from a good team. He's said this before and is impressed with the team. We have good YOUNG depth and we should be competitive sooner than later.

2. The guy for the Kings is Evan Turner, but he's probably not going to be there when we pick.

3. Carl Landry was a nice short term pickup, but he feels Jason Thompson is the future 4 in Sacramento.

4. Spencer Hawes is like a box of chocolates...You never know what you're going to get. They also talked about the Laker game and how Andrew Bynum is supposed to be able to play at that level and get those results more than he does.

It was a radio interview so I don't have a link. If one pops up I'll share.

Well all of these either fall into the "no S Sherlock' category, or the "just being generous because I'm on a show in town" category. I remember a lot of the interviews last year when the team was at it's worst and all of the interviews on 1140 were internet writers who were saying that this Kings team was on the way up.

It's only natural for the interviewers who work for the station that relies almost completely on Kings material for survival to try and nudge the interview in a positive direction. As natural as the internet writer who depends on national readership to speak positively about the team of the city where the interview is being broadcast.

Can anyone honestly remember an interview at 1140 that went dramatically against the Kings? Even in the last couple of years when they were simply awful?

I didn't hear the interview so I could be way off, if so I apologize. I just find it hard to believe that things on that station have changed much in the last year.

The first and third points come as no surprise to me. I think that the rapid ascension of the Blazers/Thunder/Grizz has shown many pundits that a large scale infusion of good young talent combined with one of them being a superstar-level player changes the team's direction very fast. Add that to the fact that a large number of teams have been hanging onto older groups WAY to long (especially in the West) and you have a ripe for the picking time to come up. I don't totally agree about Landry. I DO think that Jason is the starter in the long run and also has FAR more potential to be better as you just can't teach 6'11" at the 4. However I think that Landry will eventually be sixth man of year material perenially.

As far as Turner being the best pick, I don't know about that. I think the size factor really applies here and I doubt that we will get the #2 pick anyway. In the West - Lakers aside - you HAVE to have a LOT of true size. I would still look at Cousins and some of the others ahead of Turner.

On the last point, he is not that far off. However, although I get as frustrated with Spencer as any Kings fan, I have to keep in mind that young bigs take several years and a LOT of work to develop. I have to say that I would rather be where we are with Spencer than have the frustration that is Bynum. All that size and ability yet he just doesn't seem to GET IT. He just looks lazy on the floor like he expects everything to just come to him. Also, does anyone realize that is the FIRST decent game he has EVER had against the Kings? I mean, come on, he should have no trouble with young bigs at his size.
