Why, When did you become fan of Sacramento Kings

Post#1 » by stock01234 » Tue Jan 11, 2011 4:27 pm

Hey Guys,

I want you, my fellow kings fans to share when and why you started following and became fans of Sacramento Kings. Other than Kings, which team do you rout for as your #2. For me

Why, When : When I came to US, I first lived in Sacramento for ~2yrs. Then moved to Bay Area for 5yrs and now in Austin, TX. My time in Sacramento is least of all three, but being my first city in US, it holds a special place for me. I started following NBA in 2004 and obviously Sacramento Kings were the team I would rout for. At that time the Royal Decline had started and many of my friends said I should follow either Spurs/Lakers. But not being a bandwagon fan, Kings are still my # 1 team.

# 2 : Eventhough many of you will kill me for this, but after Kings, I support the "LA LAKERS" . I know being kings fan, technically I should hate Lakers to death. But for me, Kings are #1 by huge margin. Between Kings and Lakers, its always Kings. But the decline of kings, not making to playoffs and gradually less nationally televised games had be chose a second team should i follow NBA in general throughout the season.

I am not sure if similar thread has been started before. If yes, mods feel free to lock this. I know there is a similar thread on RealGM general NBA forum. But that is for all teams and not exclusive for kings.

I read the post and am curious where are you from originally?

To answer the question I've been a Kings fan for an awfully long time. One of my first real memories is as a child at some time in the mid-late 80s going to a game with my family. I guess I'm mostly a fan because my dad was and he used to get tickets often and so we'd all go along as a family and have a good time. I still have a lot of programs and junk from the "old" days, my favorite being a Danny Ainge poster where he's advertising the old soft drink Slice.

To answer the second question I don't have a second favorite team, once the Kings are out of the playoffs (or don't make it) I typically just root for who ever I deem least likely to win. I hate the idea of the same old teams winning over and over again.

I absolutely HATED sports as a kid, so it's somewhat ironic. I was a bandwagon jumper after watching part of the 01 playoffs at a pool party. I don't know, the game just actually became FUN to watch when they were playing it and then it was ingrained.

I support the Warriors, living in the bay. I love Portland, so I also support the Blazers. And one of my bros is a die hard Bulls fan, so they're up there too.

I am originally from India. As you know NBA or basketball in general is still not popular there. ESPN India never televised a single NBA game there. It was more of cricket, soccer, volleyball. Golf and Baseball are growing in India. Even when I was there a decade back, people followed Brazil and all teams of English Premier League. People followed Yankees and Red Sox. I guess couple times Super Bowl was also televised. But not a single basketball game. I don't know a single person there who would know if there was a league called NBA..!!

Why?

Well, I have two older brothers, (every youngster looks up to their older bros). Both, who have been die hard Kings fans right out of the womb. (Just a bit of an exaggeration :)). We were all born and raised in Nor-Cal. (Yuba City). So, it was easy to follow the the nearest sports teams; Kings, Giants, 49ers. And yep, that's pretty much it haha. I've been wearing Kings/Giants/49ers clothing since I was a baby. I actually have pictures to prove it. 8-)

When?

I really didn't become a "Die-Hard" Kings fan in-till the 6th grade in 2004. I remember being on my bunk bed watching the Kings vs. Timberwolves, Game 7, Webber missed the 3 pointer to end the series. It was heart breaking to say the least. :(

Do I root for any other NBA teams?

Nope, I only root for ONE team. And that's the SACRAMENTO KINGS BABY!! Other then that, any team that's playing against those damn Lakers!!

(so I guess I do "root" for other NBA teams; BEAT LA!!)

I would be the oldest brother of YC42Balla (I'm 27). I was actually a Bulls fan first (Sorry YC to let ya hear that) because my older cousins were all in love with Jordan and his rings. But I remember my dad got free nosebleed tickets to the Kings vs Clippers way back in 1993 and after the game we got to high-five Olden Polynice and ever since then I was a Kings fan...fell in love with The Animal, The Rock, OP & co...watched them get swept by the Supersonics in their first Sacramento Playoff series...

And I have no other teams I root for...not even the Bulls.

I was born in San Jose and moved to Sacramento when I was 4. Been a fan of the Kings since the move! My Dad hated the Warriors when we were in SJ, thats why we are Kings fans not Warrior fans.

Geography. I was born and raised in Sacramento. I became a fan during the Mitch Richmond days when my dad took me to a game as a boy and bought me a Mitch Richmond jersey, which I still proudly wear. I remember we beat the Boston Celtics that day. I've been a hardcore Kings fan ever since and will always be as long as they're in Sacramento.

No other NBA team matters to me.

The jersey was really big! It didn't fit me at the time, but it was the only one they had left. I didn't care. I knew I would eventually grow into it.

Fell in love with that '99-'00 team. Didn't get to see a lot of the games back then since I live in central California and at the time it was all Lakers here. Just kind of lucky I guess that eventually central Cal would become a bit of a Kings market.

Back in the day I used to root for the Barkley era Suns. Fun team to watch, a lot like that C-Webb Kings team.

When/Why: I was born and raised and still live in socal but when I was 9 i went up to sacramento to visit some family. I don't know if you guys remember a guy named Darrick Martin who played like 2 or 3 seasons on the kings from around 2000-2003. My dad was his high school coach so when we went up there he called him up and got us tickets which happened to be my first pro game and I met Darrick and he introduced me to chris webber and ever since I have been a huge fan. Ironically enough the rivalry with the Lakers started soon after so all my friends and family a Faker fans...

Became a fan when they first moved here because I lived here. Born and raised in Sacramento. I remember seeing Theus, Eddie Johnson, Terry Tyler, Otis Thorpe, and Tank Thompson play when I was a young lad. Saw my first nba game at arco Kings versus the Rockets (tickets were $15 and they were pretty good seats).

The Sonics use to be my second favorite team, loved watching Kemp play, but now that they moved I don't have a 2nd favorite I just root for whoever is playing the Lakers, next whoever is playing the Warriors, and next whoever is playing the Heat.

Lets see... I started watching basketball back during the Bulls FIRST three-peat in the early 90s. My brother was a Bulls fan and I decided to bandwagon and root for the Bulls too. When Jordan retired I jumped off the bandwagon and started watching the Kings in 1993-94 because they were the hometown team. I've been a loyal fan ever since.

I wouldn't say I root for any other team necessarily, but I do root for LeBron James, so I used to watch the Cavaliers and now I watch the Heat. The Magic also look interesting after the trade. Also I will root for any team playing against the Lakers.

And for the topic creator, YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!! That's like illegal to like both the Kings and Lakers. Ya gotta pick a side, man. (lol j/k)

I've been a Sacramento Kings fan since 1985 (lived in Citrus Heights). I went to the original Arco (I think it held 10,333) as a kid when Reggie Theus, Larry Drew, Mike Woodson, Otis Thorpe, LaSalle Thompson, Eddie Johnson, and crew lost to the Twin Towered Houston Rockets in the playoffs. I remember going to a Kings game against the Showtime Lakers too. I remember when we had four, YES FOUR, 1st round picks (Lionel Simmons (once missed game due to playing too much Nintendo), Travis Mays, Duane Causwell, Anthony Bonner). I remember Ricky Berry's death, Bobby Hurley's car accident, Joe Kleine, Spud Webb, Danny Ainge, Wayman Tisdale, "Never Nervous" Pervous Ellison, Kenny "The Jet" Smith (won Slam Dunk contest in baby blue Kings uni), Vernon "Mad Max" Maxwell, Mitch "The Rock" Richmond, Jason "White Chocolate" Willaims, Vlade "I shave before the game and have a beard after halftime" Divac, Phil Johnson as coach (long time assistant to Jerry Sloan in Utah to this day), Jerry Reynolds as coach, Bill Russell as coach, the lockout season that was the turning point to winning seasons, Rick Adelman picking boogers, Robert Horry's shot, Mike Bibby's shot, missed free throws, Chris Webber's knee, you name it I've heard and seen it all. I moved to Orange County in 1989 and was surrounded by Lakers fans but stayed true to the Kings. 2002 was hard on all Kings fans at the time but especially hard on me. In 2008 I moved back up north (Folsom). I've been with the team through thick and thin, ups and downs (more downs) and look forward to hopefully experiencing the ups again sometime soon.

I became a fan in 85' I suppose. I can tell you when I became a Minnesota Twins Fan. I can tell you when I became a Chicago Bear Fan, but it's weird with the Kings because until Chris Webber came along none of the players I really liked played for the Kings. I was a huge Dominique Wilkins fan. I was a Huge Kirby Puckett and Walter Payton/Mike Singletary fan.

I liked the Kings before Mitch Richmond. I remember when Mark Olberding and LaSalle Thompson were around. I remember I got an autograph from a Michael Jackson who played for the Kings at a Rax restaurant. I've always liked the Kings, but to be honest why has been because they have been local.

That's why if they leave I'm sure I'll follow them for a while, but I probably will lose interest in the NBA all together.

I only just got deep into the sport (Strategies, financials, etc.), back when I was like 7, it was just all fun, and then I had a big party and we had a competition with mates on NBA Live, and I used to kill with Sacramento, so I got to know the team really well back then. (Well, now I get to know all teams lol) And now the team has changed, I still share that love for the franchise. I got to know the sport through the team :)

When: See above; when I was 7.

Other teams, the Pacers are my favourite East team, but I equally have a love for the Nets and Spurs (Even though I hated the Spurs then lol), whom where the first teams I saw play in real life. Oh and teh Magic (Whom I also saw play)

Other Teams: Pacers, Nets, Magic, Spurs, Mavs, Jazz. (I A better word would be teams I also follow.)

Return to Sacramento Kings
