You know, I think that this is one of those situations like the anti-Luther guys here - you're just not going to agree with anything positive about JT no matter WHAT any of us say.
Did you actually go back and review your statements and realize how you are contradicting yourself? You agree with everyone's assesment of JT's game - which includes having a nice soft touch on his jumper and short hook - yet you say "it looks like he's trying to break off the rim every time he shoots".
This discussion has taken on the form of MANY here on this board lately and it's the principal reason that many of us are frustrated in EVERY topic any more. The whole losing/moving thing combined has basically destroyed this fanbase and made it very difficult to find ANY kind of positive even if it is the development of a really nice complimentary big from a #12 pick in a weak draft.
The Haslem comparisons are excellent ones with one major difference - Udonis Haslem will ALWAYS be 6'8" not 6'11". JT is not a superstar or an all-star, he is a very nice complimentary third big on a GOOD team, and a starter on a crappy team. If DMC hadn't started to get his head straight and Sammy suddenly showed up to play for his next contract in the second half here, he WOULD be the starter. As well the point about the point is the biggest thing when it comes to JT's advancement. He is NOT a big who will routinely create for himself. He needs a good veteran point to create opportunities for him. Watch how much better he plays with even POOH at the point and you can easily see what I mean. He grew late, so he learned the post late and is JUST NOW figuring out how to move his feet properly to take advantage of his length and size against 4's and his speed against 5's.
I fully agree that once again, the "x" factor that is affecting things here is PW. He should have reined in Beno a long time ago and told him to stop shooting the f(%*g ball every time on the P n R and get it in the hands of the big man instead. Unfortunately, neither Beno nor Tyreke is a true point, but rather they are a combo guard and a good passing and handling 2.
As far as the defense goes, JT has teamed as defender against some of the leagues PREMIER bigs this season along with Sammy and DMC and pretty much served them with some of their worst games of the season. You think that LMA or Dwight want to play against these three any more this season? There's a good reason - besides the desperate need for consistent backcourt third guard scoring - that GP moved Landry out first among the bigs. He is too short to play effective post defense when it comes playoff time. It would be one thing if he wa a widebody, but them he wouldn't be the scorer he is. The Glen Davis' of the league can make it work that way, but really you need the height AND size to battle when the game slows down into the halfcourt.

He needs to learn to be more comfortable with his back to the basket, but he'll never be a very good NBA player playing that way. The way Paul Westphal uses JT is a shame.
Yeah, but at the very least he's a much better fit next to Cousins than Landry was, even if it's at the expense of his individual game.
JT came out of college as a senior and a decent player, but it's hard for someone like him to really "break through" because he had very little ceiling left.
He's a proven 14 point, 9 board type of player in starters minutes. A bigger, longer Udonis Haslem. Not bad, but not great.
I'm just glad so many have jumped into reality and I'm coincidentally no longer being bombarded with all the "JT hater" stuff.

I should have been clear what I meant was Thompson has a good touch on his jumpshot, but when it comes to finishing around the basket, or any kind of 1 on 1 play he sucks.
