I guess I'd vote player A as the better defender.

Player A also dishes out more assists for his team.

It's probably no secret one of these guys is IT since this is your post. You should have also included DWS and Drtg

In comparison Ben McLemore, the guy you say is horrible, had a similar Drtg this past season of 112

I have a hard time figuring out what the purpose of this exercise is. Is player C just one person playing four positions against four opponents? How are we supposed to compare those positions relative to players A and B which are clearly PG? But simply between A and B I'd have to say that B is the better defender because of the lower eFG% of the opponent. However, I'd still like to know who was on the floor in terms of opponent and teammates in order to make these stats. Some of the talk about defense on this board has me a little lost because defense should be a team concept, not an individual one.

my guess is the purpose of this exercise is to convert IT's non-believers into believers. Also chart C would be McLemore and Gay to show IT has similar defensive stats.

So C is a composite of players. Regardless, we split on whether A or B is a "better" defender. Still moot cause I don't believe you can trust a person's individual stats as a record of their defense if the overall team defense stinks.

I'm sorry for the confusion. Player C is just one player who played at (mostly) 2 different positions last year, SG and SF. The chart tries to show how effective he was at each position.

You see this is where you lose me as a lifelong basketball guy with advanced stats.

AS can tell you part of the story.

Can they me about he clutch quarter, half or fame ending shots made by IT or Gay?

No.

Can they tell me about all the times that some d leaguer desperate for a contract blew by Ben and was stopped by one of the boys or they picked up a foul?

No.

Can they judge a players heart and competitiveness in a win or die situation?

No.

The metrics make sense to a point, but only to a point. Then knowledge and feel and actual observation need to make the final decision.

Btw, what's your point? What exactly are you trying to prove here?

Please clarify for me as a non-stat geek.

advanced stats can be very helpful when paired with game film. The two by themselves don't provide the entire picture IMO

Game film is all you need if you know what the intended strategy is. Numbers are the result of what happens, why it happens and how you can reproduce it is a combination of personnel and the ability to use it to it's full effectiveness.
