I remember how god awful we looked last year in preseason before coming out of the gates looking like a new team so I'm not putting a ton of stock into how we've looked so far. The India trip leaving with us only a few days of practice didn't help things either. For as much criticism as Walton gets as to the quality of coach he is, one thing he always had was those Lakers teams in the top half of the league, defensively. I think we were somewhere like 28th on defense last year so any improvement there will really help us.

Early prediction on Giles vs Holmes minutes.

Who gets the most playing time first 10 games of the season?

I think Holmes ultimately wins the backup spot this year. I'd love for Giles to prove me wrong and I'm as high on him as anyone but I think Holmes will be a regular in the rotation.

Bagley playing good individual and team defense tonight.

No doubt Holmes is in the rotation, only question is if he beats out Dedmon as a starter (though Dewayne looked better tonight). Id extend Richaun as soon as possible. He can be a solid starter

This year won’t be about stats, but teaching Marvin feel for the game on both ends

Agree 100%. Really there are 3 things I'm really looking for from him this year.

Defensive awareness and positioning. Dont care about steal or block numbers this year

Passing. There was a play tonight he was diving on the left block, had a few passing angles but forced up the shot and got blocked by the help defender. Plays like that need to be cut back this year. He doesn't need to be a big time facilitator, just need to not force shots like that, he needs to know when not to force it and take the easy pass.

FT%. This is the one area I would like to see some actual statistical improvement. Doesn't need to be a huge jump but if he can get to the 72-75% range that would be a good improvement in year two.

I am starting to think that Giles's knee is in really bad shape. If the Kings were holding him out for injury prevention purposes, they would be shouting it from the rooftop and would be crystal clear that there is nothing wrong. Instead, they really aren't saying much about what is going on. It really worries me.

I think Giles gets the most playing time in the first 10 games because he is the better player, but this is starting to get Brandon Roy-ish (though not exactly the same injury).

What do we think of Buddy's comments about his contract extension talks? https://www.sacbee.com/sports/nba/sacramento-kings/article236025223.html
“We need to get that done,” Hield told The Bee. “I want to get that done, for sure. If it doesn’t get done, things could go the other way. This is where I want to be, so it would be good for me to be here in Sacramento. If I’m their guy, I think they should make it happen already. I want to build a future here. I want to be here, but we have to see something. Something’s gotta come to the table. We have a week and a half to see what that brings, but I want to be here.”

That is a little worrisome for me, but I think in the end, Buddy gets his max this off season and money cures all wounds.

It is good to hear he wants to be here, I believe him also.

I'm guessing it ends up being max or close to it.

Honestly I am getting a little bent on the articles pushing the bs narrative that we have to somehow “make a move” or “give up one of them”.

We are on the way up.

If things go well and we ascend to a contender status, is there any reason that Vivek doesn’t decide to do like the Dubs did and just pay guys and pay the tax to contend? Ultimately that’s what it’s about right? And he can afford it. So he should put his money where his mouth is and pony up if he wants to really win. Young stars are going to cost money no matter what.

Buddy isn’t getting max, IMO. I think it ends 24-28/year

Kings can’t afford to pay Fox/Bagley/BOgi/Barnes/Holmes etc, while giving Buddy money like that.

Kings have all the leverage

1. China situation will make teams reticent of extensions if they sense decrease in cap

2. Buddy is making ~5, its s big thing for him to get long term security now, as anything like injuries can happen

3. The team’s next year with cap space will by in large be young, rebuilding teams with a different age timeline, he is not guaranteed a max next year at all

4. Literally no point to the Kings paying him big money now to matching next year

He’s already said he’s taking less than max as long as it’s not an insult, which points to the Kings already taking a tough stance, and I think the Kings have the leverage to get a good deal

Of course the Kings don't have to pay him.

But Zach Lowe said he had one of the best shooting seasons for a guard in history.

46/43/89 is nothing to sneeze at. That is Curry-esque as the Kings hoped he'd become.

I'm guessing he's not a great defender. Not too high in assists but decent rebounding average for a SG.

Yes Kings have to pay Fox and Bagley too. But Lowe suggested that by the time they have to pay Bagley, they may be able to trade Barnes whose deal will be near expiring.

Make or miss league and the Kings are unwilling to pay one of the best makers in the league?

Looks like our current offer is 4 years/$90 million but Buddy is looking for 4 years/$110 million. Pay that man. 4/90 would be a steal, 4/110 seems to be a reasonable offer, hopefully we can find a middle ground at 100 million.

Bogdanovic has a 4-year $51.4 million offer on the table.

4/90 would be a decent offer for Buddy if Barnes didn't just get 4/85. Hard to justify when Buddy is more important to the team and has become a historically great long range shooter. Probably need to offer at least 4/100.

Let's hope that this is just posturing. As said above, the Barnes contract is the problem, he was overpaid

The Barnes contract has nothing more than any other contract being signed in the NBA when it comes to Buddy. He has said pay him what HE is worth, and the contracts being handed out to players at this current time tend to agree with him.
Again, the Barnes contract isn’t “the” problem.
So according to you if Barnes didn’t sign or the Kings didn’t offer him the contract Buddy would sign for 4/90? 4/80?
You can say whatever you like about the Barnes contract, or heck you can even jump on the laughable bandwagon that the Kings won’t be able to sign Buddy and Bogs because of it, but one thing you can’t do is say the Barnes contract is the problem regarding Buddy’s negotiations. When Murray just signed for 170 and others that either arguably aren’t as good or slightly better are signing for a lot more, it’s simply the market, and right now 4/110 is unders for Buddy and the only reason he isn’t maxed is his age and perceived lower ceiling due to that.

I don't particularly believe Barnes was much of an overpay. That being said, its foolish to suggest players don't compare what they're making to their teammates. No doubt in my mind Buddy has thought to himself "I am way better than Barnes. I deserve way more than him." That's obviously not the only factor in determining what he's willing to take but its a factor.
