Re: Kings off season FA thread
Kings signed Glenn Robinson III. Wonder what it cost? Here is to hoping for a 1 year deal!

Good pickup for a position of need.

Id probably feel better giving him minutes over Jeffries. I liked Jeffries hustle but hes destined as a end of the bench guy. Robinson was a 40% 3pt shooter who can fill some minutes at the 3. So if we aren't comfortable giving Woodard minutes right out the gate (I think we should, hes already 21 and definitely filled out) then i dont mind GRIII taking some of those minutes to start the season.
Interested to see what our rotation ends up looking like.

Am I the only one besides a random dude on the General Board that sees these two signings as the writing in the wall that Barnes is gonna be moved sooner or later before the deadline?

I mean I think we all hope that's the case. Listening to McNair's presser today it's certainly sounds like he is thinking 3 steps ahead.OGSactownballer wrote:Am I the only one besides a random dude on the General Board that sees these two signings as the writing in the wall that Barnes is gonna be moved sooner or later before the deadline?

I would love to see the Kings figure out a way to get Zhaire Smith. He still has a great amount of potential and could really be a steal for the team.

It’s not inevitable because it’s not like cap space means as much for Sacramento, but the Kings have enough rotation-caliber players signed to cheap contracts to make Barnes + X for expiring contracts + young players/picks deals workable.

My thing is that there seems to be a distinct style movement here.
McNair is quite obviously building this team around Fox and to a lesser extent (depending on whether he returns to full health) Bagley.
He is building the team to run and be far more athletic in the modern vein. He is also veering younger with key guys and going super cheap/recycle (ie - Whiteside) with the vet fillers.
So does Barnes really fit the mold? I don’t think he does. He isn’t old of course, but as far as core pieces go he actually is. And he does not work for an improving/growth timeline that we are now on. He is what he is and that is no knock and I feel that his contract is at worst neutral and really a net positive for what he gives and the fact it is declining.
But ultimately it would be better to free up the length and be more flexible in the middle term if Fox takes another leap and Bagley looks to fulfill his promise.

COVID is another reason to look for a lot of depth this year. Just look at the NFL. Broncos lost all 4 QB's this weekend. Kings could face a similar situation where depth is needed.
Monte looking ahead.

Yes, the contract is declining and not that bad; what they traded to get him and the first year are sunk costs now and it’s just 3 years, $60 million (a more tradeable deal than what Bogdan’s signed to going forward). So while Sacramento would be a great one-stop shop for contenders looking to beef up their rotation at the trade deadline if the Kings are out of contention, it’s not like they’re going to preemptively tank or take themselves out of playoff contention to get rid of Barnes midseason if he’s a part of their success.
I think Covid is really gonna upend things with the NBA out of a bubble - just look at the other sports leagues - and Sacramento with more parity between its best and 10th best player is positioned to handle that better than other teams. This roster isn’t built to tank, and if they wait until the offseason Barnes at 2 years, $38 million would be a solid short-term consolation prize for teams that struck out in free agency.
Sure they’ll trade him if they’re getting good young players back, but I really doubt they’re going to trade him for a second-rounder if they’re 3 games out of the playoffs even if by the book that might be considered a slight plus in terms of assets. Not like they’re gonna sign Giannis or Kawhi with max cap space.
