Role player potential. Scoring off the bench.

No he hasn’t shown he’s a liability when iso’d on defense as far as I’m concerned
You could probably blow by JJ when iso'd on the perimeter. Its bad.

He has length/athleticism/a good motor work rate. So I don’t think there is anything that necessarily prohibits him from developing. He obviously needs to bulk up and he has been. Blown by? Which games?

In Sac and Vegas. Now that I've pointed it out you should notice. JJ gets blown by almost every game. Slow reaction time i suppose or slow reaction to move his feet.

I can't find any quick vid's on SL defense but trust me JJ is still getting abused.

There are thousands of vids of him playing defense, man, just point to one and illustrate it and we can go over it :) In Vegas? Josh Jackson had a bad night and I didn’t see anything in his footage against us?

I think he will be fine if he isn’t because of the attributes I’ve discussed

Back from Vegas...couple observations

1.Obviously there's a lot of negativity regarding the Bagley pick right now. To me one of the biggest questions entering this season: if Bagley looks bad the first couple weeks will the Kings keep giving him significant minutes to help his development when it also may mean us losing games? If he can't hit shots from outside 5 feet, isn't a huge factor on the glass and continues to struggle on defense how can you start him or play him major minutes as a rookie? It's a tough call because if the #2 overall pick isn't getting much playing time he'll be talked about as a bust all year.

2. One area that actually impressed me with Bagley was his man to man defense. He does a good job staying in front of his man and also contesting shots/shot blocking. Even though he's thin i only really saw him get manhandled once in summer league (by ayton). That being said he's gonna hurt us with defensive IQ. He doesn't seem to understand which man he should defend after a screen is set. He just seems pretty unaware on defense in general except when he's playing straight man to man where he can rely on his athleticism.

3. I'd love to see the Kings simplify Bagley's offensive game for his rookie year. No 3-pointers. Fewer perimeter shots. Just focus on dunks/tip-ins and offensive rebounding. Sure you'd like for him to diversify his game but it may help early on to just have him do the things that have always come easy to him. Like Ayton, Bagley's a guy who, in theory, can do a lot of scoring without actual plays being called for him.

4. As far as Jackson, the hot shooting is nice but i'd love to see him develop some other skills as well. He's not a good defender, not a good distributor and not a factor on the glass. At this point, if his shot is off he literally is no help to us on the basketball court.

5. Like everyone else i loved seeing Giles do well. I'd love it even more if his minutes are closely regulated this year. I'd say around 20-22 minutes per night with him resting the 2nd game of back to backs. We aren't contending for a title this year but could have a great building block for the future if he manages to stay healthy. It can't hurt continuing to be cautious.

6. I'm interested in seeing Harry & WCS play together. These are 2 bigs with perimeter shots that actually look pretty good. Them on the floor together will definitely help our spacing. Harry's such a good passer that he may get willie some open looks inside.

Also, i'm terrified that despite what he's said publicly, Joerger will continue having the Kings play one of the slowest tempos in the league. It's scary watching these summer league games as the offense looks pretty similar to the one we run in the regular season.

The thing about running this 2-bigs high post offense is that there's usually only 7 or 8 seconds left when we actually get into a set. It also seems like there's so little offensive freedom and the players are thinking too much instead of just reacting.

Once De'aaron Fox eventually plays for another coach it will seem criminal how handcuffed the kid was in Joerger's system. This is literally the fastest player i've ever seen play basketball and he's almost exclusively a half court player at this point.

I've been watching Ayton in summer league and they are giving him opportunities to be a finisher. Plenty of lob plays at the rim. That's something they didn't do for Bagley at all. I can understand them trying to develop other things or look at the other stuff but geez, give him something! Last year they let the poor guys suffer for way too long before they let them start playing in a way that was more comfortable for them.

If Vlade has some knowledge at all then he won’t offer more than 9 for Smart and not offer Hood anything.

One thing that nearly all GMs do with the possible exception of Myers, Ainge, Morey, Buford and Lindsey is to make moves simply for the sake of making them.

It’s a recipe for long term mediocrity/ failure and kind of shows what kind of organisations they’ve been.

I've read your thread from this point to the end and don't come as a troll. I live in Rhode Island so effectively my home team - when I watch 30 minutes of basketball - is the Celtics. Before Vlade threw money at LaVine, I was hoping you would make a run at Smart. He's a subpar shooter - bring in Drew Hanlen to work with him - but he's a winner in every other way.

You have the cap space to offer him four at $55 mil or $60 mil but front load it at $16.5 mil or $15.5 mil and work down to $13.5 mil or $12.5 mil. He will bring defensive intensity like you've never seen. He's the guard equivalent of Andre Iguodala. He's a perfect fit with Fox. Looking at your payroll, Shumpert's $11 mil comes off after this season, so you'll still have some money to play with next season with the cap scheduled to go up to $108 mil.

I don't know whether the Celtics will match. It won't be easy for them because they've got to deal with Rozier who's going to be very unhappy coming off the bench. And then they're going to make their third $30 mil offer to Kyrie next July. That will give them three players - two coming off major surgery - at a combined $90 mil. Good luck.

I also don't believe that the pick you lose this coming year will be a bottom five pick. You have a nice young nucleus which has been underreported. The addition of Smart will not hurt you.

He knows how to win and he can play multiple defensive positions.

Good luck.

I'm too old to understand your "gif". The first NBA game I attended was at the old Philadelphia Civic Center to see Bill Russell and Sam and KC Jones against Wilt and Hal Greer.

Dude, Capela was never an option for this team and would have been a terrible signing. We would have had like 7 centers on the team.

Return to Sacramento Kings
