That video doesn’t show me anything. It’s like the Kings crew contacted Willie and had a convo like this:
“Willie, we need you to show up for work just once this offseason. Please come in. We need to show the people that you are improving”
“K.”
“We need you to show off what you’ve been working on.”
“What I’ve been working on? I got these paintings... oh you mean on the court? Yeah. I can... uh... show you that...”

... And this is what we see. It looks like nothing has changed. He looks like the same dude. It’s likely that he’s been working out, but this video does more harm than good.

Honest to god, I hope he is working and improving. I want the guy to succeed. It’s best for all parties. I’m just really worried that he may not.

I always hate contract year players. They typically put one serious summer before their big pay day and return back to their uninspired selves once they got their $$$. I have a feeling Willie is that type of player.

Agreed. I wish it was different with him because he has such amazing physical gifts. He just has no drive. It feels like such a wasted opportunity because there are so many people who would love to be in his position. He should take advantage of his athleticism and actually get better. He would absolutely get paid if that was the case. Unfortunately, teams will probably (hopefully) see through his contract year play.

In Kings related news:

Vince Carter to Hawks for 1 year $2.4 million. They got him for $6.6 million less than we paid. This might be it for Vinsanity.

A guy I wanted the Kings to sign, Troy Williams, a 23 year old athletic small forward, what's a small forward Vlade may ask and Peja would respond that's what I played Vlade signed with Pelicans. Two years, non-guaranteed. Guess we couldn't do that. :nonono:

I saw a tweet from Iman Shumpert with a video of him playing ball. It was just highlights of him but he was looking good. I saw Noah, Tristan Thompson, and Willie in the video.

At 27, Shumpert, like Willie, has something to play for this year in a contract year. We could potentially get something for him at the deadline because of his ability to defend and expiring contract. I said this before but I think the Rockets could use him with the loss of Ariza and Moute. They'll want a top end wing defender to take on the Warriors come playoff time.

Just listened to a podcast with CJ McCollum and Kevin Durant. The topic was brought up of players not getting major pub league wide...

Durant: You know who I like a lot? Willie Cauley-Stein. I feel like he's the next one of those guys.

McCollum: He's springy, springy. Like crazy springs.

Durant: Oh my goodness. He's fast too. Gets up and down the floor.

McCollum: Gets off the ground like as quick as anyone I've ever seen.

Durant: Once they get better in Sac, they're gonna see his athleticism is ridiculous.

McCollum: Insane.

I for one want to give him until the all-star break before moving him. Even with a small upgrade at small forward this summer the Kings aren't making the playoffs this year. I don't think a Willie trade is gonna help the kings on the court this year.

He does have obvious flaws but he did develop a good deal the last couple years offensively. I wanna see what sort of strides he makes this summer/start of the year before giving up on him. If he becomes this great player because its a contract year shame on him for only playing for the money, but also shame on the coaching staff for not finding a way to motivate him.

As an outsider I thought Mason was pretty decent as a rookie but reading this thread, a lot people dont seem to rate him very highly. Whats the problem with him?

Poor court awareness at times. It takes him too long to establish offensive cohesion, a lot of the times he finds players in non prime position. He drives and gets into trouble.

Paired with a decent facilitator at the time he looks better. Like if he played with Bogi or Fox at the same time it would help.

I'm sure Bjelica on the floor with him would help.

It's mental mostly.

I’m personally fine with him. He’ll be a good backup pg for the majority of his career. I think a lot of people expected there to be less of an adjustment period for him coming into the league because he was an older rookie. He’s definitely done well in some areas, but he is still adjusting to a foreign role which is more of a facilitator than a scorer. He tends to get tunnel vision when he realizes he can get past his defender. Normally this would be a good thing because it shows confidence. Instead, he goes straight for a bucket and gets his shot altered greatly because of his size. What he should be doing is working on the drive-and-kick. As soon as he understands that this is the more efficient play, he will become even more well liked. He can already get past defenders. He just needs to complete his driving game.

His defense isn’t nearly as bad as some people have painted it to be. He normally can guard bigger guys because of his strong stature. That being said, his lateral quickness is surprisingly slower than expected and his length limits his ability to alter a shot. I think he can work on a few nuances with hip movement to turn him into a plus defender. His IQ is there.

For anyone who wanted Capela, I’m sorry. This is the stake in that coffin. I, myself, am relieved that the Kings didn’t do something foolish and go after him. Now we might see a salary dump from Houston. Maybe Kings action?

I wasn’t necessarily targeting him, but he was one of the people I had in mind. It was a pipe dream thinking a lowly team like the Kings could pry him away. He would’ve costed $90m/4years to pry him away. That would’ve been crazy!

A true shame... one of the most physically gifted athletes ever but with a two cent brain and seemingly one cent work ethic.

I can't totally blame him though. A guy as gifted as he is can coast his whole career, bank $30M and do things he truly enjoys. Even if I feel like if you're that good at something you owe it to yourself to go all out. Different strokes I guess.
