He has worked so hard non-stop since the season ended. Then he was running up and down the court like crazy, so he couldn't focus on playing his game. He was pretty much going through the motions, trying to keep up with the game. He broke through the wall this game. The non-stop work he puts in now will pay off later on when he gets some rest and gets fresh during the season. Imagine constantly going to the gym and running, changing your body dramatically, then competing with a bunch of fast, smaller guys without taking a break. This is all good for him and his development to go through this. That's why I have been saying the whole time that I'm still high on him even though everyone was freaking out.

I just started the game, 3 minutes in. Papa is still making the same mistakes/displaying same limitations: rocks for hands, dribbles the ball after rebounds, poor awareness on D, and can't move with the ball. The player guarding GP is completely overmatched by Papa's size and strength.

At 3 minutes in I'm not sure this is a game I'd brag about for Papa.

The beginning wasn't the best, I didn't like the bobbling of the ball, but he'll learn. If he didn't have weaknesses he might as well just be a superstar now. Most players are going to be smaller than Papagiannis. Playing against smaller players is a different type a challenge, but not less of a challenge. Watch the whole game. He makes a lot of good plays, including ones he doesn't show up in the stat sheet for. I really liked his defense.

I don't think people realize that Papagiannis was thought of as a late 2nd round pick by most before he was drafted. He was drafted for his potential, not what he will be in his first year or two. I think his progress in one year has been great and I really like what I see. Everyone wanted Denzel Valentine or Wade Baldwin and they have looked absolutely terrible. Papa G had a much better rookie season and has much better potential.

So, its been really irritating watching Papagianis continually shy away from contact. However, while he definately must work on his fundamentals, i also realized he is much less strong than he looks. I don't say that as an indictment. He is super young and has the frame to put on muscle, just needs to put the time in. Looking forward to Uncle Zach schooling him everday in practice and showing him how to utilize his size and rebound in traffic.

Defense, rebounding, setting awesome screens to go along with his good touch, developing shot and solid passing within an offense. That's a great combination to have in my opinion. Most bigs who rebound and play defense don't have the potential with shooting and passing as he has. At a minimum, defense, rebounding and setting screens is still solid as a role player as a better Kosta Koufos even if he doesn't develop his shooting and passing (with his work ethic I don't see why he won't).

So you see him as a role player. I see role player skills as well but I have some doubts. It's still early in his career so he has time to fix some (not all) of his major issues.

No joke last season I was impressed with how physical Papa was going against Steven Adams... but now since he's lost the weight I'm watching him struggle to back down Chris in Summer league???

All players who aren't stars are role players. If non-star players don't learn to fill their role, they won't be successful. He likely isn't a star, but I wouldn't say he can't be. People talk about him like he's garbage. He was picked 13th in a terrible draft. Becoming a good rotational role player would be amazing for that position in that draft, and he has potential to be even more. People just have extreme expectations and no patience it seems.

IMO unless he gets quicker he projects as your 2nd big off the bench role player.

You also have to remember that they call the game entirely different in summer league. For instance they never allow that much swiping at the ball in the regular season. Same with post D. They allow far more than they would normally. He'll have to adjust to this new physical characteristics, but SL is almost like 90's ball.

Yeah, I think phase 1 was losing the weight, phase 2 will probably be strength, but some of that strength will only come with age.

Tough game coming up. Dallas is playing well. The difference will be whether the Kings can contain Ding. That's all you can hope to do.

Return to Sacramento Kings
