Scouting report on Spencer Hawes?

Hey guys,

I am a Sixer fan and I am sure a lot of you have heard about the Dalembert for Nocioni + Hawes trade. It came right out of the blue, because none of the insiders have heard about this trade at all.

I watched you guys play last year and it seems to me it was preferred to have Thompson + Laundry playing over Hawes. I've seen highlights for Hawes, and he looked like a beast but so would anyone on youtube highlights. So my question is, how good is he as a player?

Thanks!

He does have some skills, but to me..he is way to inconsistant. One game he will put up great numbers, then the next game he will have 4 pts and 2 boards. He doesn't like to mix it up in the paint either.

Some games he hustles and some games he doesn't. He can hit a outside shot, sometimes shoots 3's, he has some passing ability.

Whoever is coaching him..needs to light a fire under his rear. I think he is a very likable person though.

He has the skill set but....

Doesnt play great defense, doesnt rebound the ball well, hangs around the 3 point line too much for a center.

He is a good shooter and a good passer but too much of a liability on the defensive side.

He will be on or off, doesnt play consistently at all, you dont know if your going to get the good or bad Spencer (unless you in Staples which means he will go off for 20-10)

Hey,

I think it was a risky trade for both sides - We get short term benefits (maybe long term depending on what we do with the extra cap space and draft pick we got). And you guys get a kid who could be great - I think to much is being expected of him right now, he is still young - especially for the center spot - But what everyone is saying about him is true, he is on and off - he can have a 20/10 game or a 8/4 game - It really depends on which mood he is in I guess. I'll be honest, I really like him - he can have a bad attitude at times in fact Coach W sat him a few games for comments he has made off court.

But anyways - here are a few things you can expect .. He can spread the court @ the center position. Has a nice mid-range shot, and can even knock down the 3 point shot (hes no dirk but he does have a quality shot). His passing skills are above average especially when you consider the fact that he is a center. He can get an occasional weak side blocked shot or 2 a game (especially when he is in beast mode)

The sky is the limit for him really, I guess in a few years we'll find out who got the best of this trade.

His passing is excellent, he'd stand at the top of the lane or at the elbows and find cutters and give&gos, his shooting is inconsistent, he's actually OK in blocks, but he's way too weak to play strong centers at either end, and because of that he's rarely in good position down low.

Hawes is talented and has all the skill in the world but he's a reluctant defender and has publicly stated he won't change his game.

Has the ability to plY in the post with tons of skill and amazing foot work but does not want to be in contact with other players in the post.

One minute he'll play fantastic and the next you'll wonder why he's on the court.

He can't really play defense and hasn't added really anything significant in his years here.

Personally, I'm not sad to see him go.

I'm not sure if it is allowed to link to this site? But a pretty comprehensive scouting report:

If that's not allowed, my apologies to the mods. It was the only one that came up on my search that wasn't from before he was drafted.

Great talent... Not so great work ethic. doesnt take criticism well in sacramento and ive heard about u philly fans hahaha .... he has all the tools in the low post game, has a jumper, good free throw shooter, good passer for a big.. will run the floor , has a 3pt shot

things he doesnt do well: anything on the defensive end, offensive reb, not very strong

mmm, sounds like he can be a gem, but it's 50/50?
I've watched you guys play recently, and he does seem to play a bit like Brad Miller.
I am actually more concerned about his defense if anything, since Elton Brand is not exactly his old self anymore...

FYI, Dalembert tends to be inconsistent as well. If he is having a great time, he can be a 10/10 player minimum. But he has been giving us locker room issues, and I was told that was the main reason we really needed to get rid of him rather than letting him to just expire. Hope he works out for you guys though!

Hawes and Landry together was way >>> than Thompson and Landry. Coach realized that and finally stuck to the obvious.

Spencer is a super skilled high potential young player. If the Sixers just give him the reigns it might be tough some nights but I think Spencer will become a really good player. He can shoot the 3 very well and has better court vision than any other C in the league right now (until Monroe and Cousins comes into the league maybe).

Obviously struggles on the boards and defensively. Good shotblocker however. I think he has the potential to be a legit 14, 8, 3 apg, 1.5 bpg player as soon as next season if used right and given consistent time. He literally has a million moves in the post but this staff really didn't utilize him there. He's not a forceful post player, gets pushed off the block, but in college and early on he showed major potential as a finesse post player.

He has shown flashes of being an all-star caliber player, but by flashes I mean one game every two weeks maybe. He has a smooth three-point shot, some really impressive post moves, and can block shots. He's a good passer, decent rebounder, and is a pretty smart player. He's not athletic, but he's quicker than, say, Brad Miller. His problem--and why I've called him "garbage" on several occasions--is that he will disappear for several games at a time. He'll just do absolutely nothing and you'll forget he's even there. So his #1 flaw is consistency.

Hawes has a bad case of Brad Miller Syndrome (BMS). Common symptoms include being lazy and wasting talent. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for this disease as of yet.

He's like Brad Miller without the bong. Good passer and shooter from the high post. If you notice, there is no d in Spencer Hawes. He will occasionally make a nice block off the ball. Other than that, he's a highway to the hoop. He has a knack for turning the other teams layups into three points. He is a world class pouter - And I'm a Hawes fan.

Thanks for the information guys. Philly will eat him alive if he sucks lol. Well if you have questions on Dalembert feel free to ask.

All these Brad Miller comparisons are terrible. IT's just not the least bit accurate at all. Other than being 'white' and 'skilled' big men they have little else in common.

If anything, Spencer reminds me more of a pre-injury, Raef LaFrentz.

Raef LaFrentz actually cared about defense and wasn't completely opposed to trying to go within 10 feet of the basket.

Check out the stats again. Their blocks were pretty comparable. Their playing style similar. The biggest discrepancy I see(and this is skewed due to Hawes small sample size as a really young player in the league and Raef being a 4 year college player) is the rebounding. Other than that, they're VERY similar and I think going forward now that Hawes' is developing physically that the similarities get even stronger. Hawes isn't THAT bad of an individual defender. He often times looked worse due to the fact that he's the last line of defense and we've had TERRIBLE team defense ever since Hawes has been in the league.

Hawes is way more dynamic than Miller. Hawes can literally make shots all over the floor whereas Brad had 2-3 spots on the floor where he was comfortable.
