Cousins Named Rookie if the Month for July...

Post#1 » by KingInExile » Mon Jul 19, 2010 12:02 am

Just announced at the start of the final summer league game that DMC was named the Rookie of the Month. Nice to see the recognition starting early! Up next...the Kings with b2b ROY seasons!
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

Props to Cousins. Now if he can beat out Blake Griffin and John Wall for the ROY, I don't see how we're not at least a .500 team this year.

Honest question, how can a guy be Rookie of the Month when he only shoots 33%, and only 20% in his last 3 games? Maybe I was watching completely different games, but I'm not sure Cousins was the best rookie this month.

So a guy that was good in half his games was the best rookie out there? Will you be happy with 41 good games and 41 terrible ones?

It's not a championship ring, it's more a promotional award for rookies who showed good games in a very marginal league, and he wasn't terrible in games 4 and 5, he deteriorated from game 4 to 6 probably because of fatigue, no need to get worked up over it.

5-18, 28%, 6 TOs, 10 fouls and 12 rebounds 4 off, and 7 trips to the line 2 assists, one block and one steal.
He wasn't good but was better than the Chicago game, which was better than Dallas. he played 6 games in 7 nigths I think, and fatigue is bound to have its effect.
There might be someone else with better stats, but it's not really that important, it' more of a promotional award of who the league wants to promote.

Well, I think this was a little different circumstance than regular season. The Kings coaching staff rode him hard for every game literally focusing on him just about every play he touched the ball on. He needs to get in better shape and by the 3rd game he was gassed. 3 minutes in he was hunched over with his hands on his knees. Fatigue did him in big time and I'm sure that was the goal if for nothing more than to show him he's far from a finished product.

Clearly, a lot of people haven't tried to play basketball 6 days in one week. But then again, when exactly was the last time IN AN NBA REGULAR SEASON that a sequence of 3 games have been played in 3 consecutive nights?
Oh yeah, that's right. 1999. Let alone 6 games in 7 nights. Its EASY to criticize a man for not being an athletic machine while you're sitting comfortably on your couch. I know it LOOKS easy from your perspective, but if you ever tried running up and down a basketball court for 2 hours yourself in just ONE day, chances are your energy level and performance may decrease slightly the next day. And the day after that. And the day after that. And 2 days after that. And the day after that. And the day after that...

My point is, we're never gonna see a frenetic schedule like this again when thinks actually COUNT, so I think all this talk about low numbers and percentages in the second half of back-to-back-to-backs is a little bit overblown.

Just because we might not see 6 games in 7 days or back-to-back-to-backs, doesn't mean he won't get fatigued during the season. Are you going to keep giving excuses in the regular season, or finally own up to the fact that he might not be as good as advertised.

Listen, I was also impressed with some of the things he did out there like passing and running the floor, but it is foolish to not take his shooting struggles into consideration when examining his performance.

He was not the only one who had to deal with the circumstances they were dealt. But he was probably one of the most underwhelming performers when looking at the whole picture.

Looks to me like someone is failing to grasp the reality that there is more to the game than just shooting percentage.

Here's the press release, which highlights his accomplishments.

LAS VEGAS -- Sacramento Kings forward DeMarcus Cousins was named the NBA's T-Mobile Rookie of the Month for July prior to the Sacramento vs. Dallas game at the 2010 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

Prior to Sunday's game, Cousins had played in five games for Sacramento and led the league in rebounds with 10.6 rounds. He averaged 16.2 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in the tournament.

Having a big guy average a double-double at better than 15/10 in a summer league that is traditionally dominated by greedy guards jacking up shots every time the ball gets anywhere near them is a pretty good accomplishment.

Maybe the award had more to do with the fact that he immediately proved doubters wrong...proved that he has a broad skill set and well rounded...proved that he is absolutely NBA ready with a multi-dimensional game. Don't blame Cousins if you have a GM who couldn't judge talent to save his life.
