Team USA/Evans: "I know I probably won't make the team"

Post#1 » by KF10 » Sat Jul 24, 2010 12:33 am

Tyreke Evans' Team USA run for this summer looks to be over. The Sacramento guard, who suffered a sprained left ankle in Tuesday's first practice of training camp that wiped him out for the week, is resigned to the fact he won't be invited back for the Aug. 10-16 training camp in New York and for the World Championship, Aug. 28-Sept. 12 in Turkey.

"It happened at the wrong time, but I just got to ice it and get better and get ready for the regular season,'' Evans said in an interview Friday with FanHouse, after he missed his third straight day of practice and was ruled out for Saturday's public scrimmage that concludes the first camp. "I know I probably won't make (the team). I didn't even play. That wouldn't be fair to the guys who played. I'll just go home and rest and get ready for next year.''

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo pretty much agreed Evans' summer is over with the team.

"It's pretty evident it's hard to give him the kind of consideration if he hasn't been able to participate, but we haven't made any final decisions,'' Colangelo told FanHouse.

Told Evans himself believes his summer is over, Colangelo was even stronger.

"I think so,'' Colangelo said. "It's a bad break for him to come up with the injury. But we've had a few bad breaks (since camp started last Tuesday, namely big men Robin Lopez and David Lee being lost due to injures and Amar'e Stoudemire due to insurance trouble).''

Evans said he hurt his ankle when he came down on the foot of North Carolina forward Tyler Zeller, a member of the college select team. While Evans said he could be healthy enough by the time the New York camp starts, he's not expecting to be invited.

Wow, that sucks for Evans. Getting his ankle injured on a teammates foot. (This reminds me how Garcia sprained his ankle during a dead ball situation couple of years ago, when he tried to get the ball on the back rim, and he landed on someones foot and was sidelined for several wks..And Garcia was never the same again).

But I guess this may be a blessing in disguise though. Finally Evans can rest and train on his weaknesses and not worrying to impress the Team USA coaches.

I didn't expect him to make it before the injury. I didn't think he was the type of guard they would be looking for. With Rose, Rondo, Westrbook and Billups trying out I fugured it would have been down to these guys.

tough break for Reke..i'm from Slovenia and i really wanted to see him play against our team in the WC..maybe there is still some hope..you never know

anyway i wish all the best to Reke and hope he won't have any more problems this summer

I don't know if this was posted yet but Beno Udrih quit our team a few days back.. after just one weak of training and without any games played he quit on the gameday with Macedonia.. i'm really dissapointed about his decision..he wasn't happy with his role in the team, mainly because he probably wouldn't start but he would still have a lot of playing time in my belief because he can play 1 and 2.. so Beno has all the time in the world now to prepare himself for the next season.. i kind of hate him right now but still wish him all the best :D and Goran Dragič is definately my favourite Sloveninan player from now on

sorry for a bit of offtopic

I disagree, those are all 1's, and evans is a combo guard, he wouldve (in my opinion) started at the 2. oh and i think u forgot about steph curry. I know he wouldnt be at the top of the list with those guys, but i feel like he should at least be mentioned

I agree.

Not one of those guys is taller than 6'3" and Euro teams traditionally have really tall 2 guards. On the basis of size alone, Evans probably could have gotten a spot.

Besides, if you read the front page article blurb it said that they could be having a guy or two over the roster number later.

I think he'll be practicing his jumper regardless of if he makes team usa or not. Also there are good shooters/coaches/trainers on team usa who might be able to help him with his shot as well. And if he were to play the 2 guard, I think he would be expected to take more shots then he did last season - which would also give him some in-game experience and confidence against world class players.

That's just my opinion though, I could be wrong - but I will admit that I am kind of leaning towards him not playing - because I don't want him to get injured, the sprained ankle was scary enough for me...

I can agree with most of you about not wanting Reke to play because of injury purposes.
But at the same time, Reke could have played along side some of the best talented players in the NBA.
And that could have helped him out alot.

The U.S. coaching staff is top Notch, they can teach young talented players how to play as a team. And how to score as a team..

For some superstars it's all about "ME", so I think it would have been a great experience. I hope he still makes the team. But at the same time, like others, I don't want him to get Injured.

Evans is deserving to be on the team as far as his talent, but I'm glad he'll probably be out.
The pattern seems to be that many of the players that play on Team USA lack energy and/or get injured during the following season. He's still young enough where he'll probably be one of their prime targets 4 years from now anyway.
Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed.

This is actually a blessing in disguise-- if Tyreke is anything like Kobe (as in will and determination) then this tiny moment of failure will likely motivate him to even greater heights.

I don't really know how much it is "failure" than just plain bad luck. He wasn't able to play due to injury. Had he been playing I'm more than positive he makes the team. They need a physical presence and he would have provided that easily.
