Kings Want Dally to Focus on...OFFENSE?!

The 76ers asked Samuel Dalembert to focus on his defense while in Philadelphia, but the center says the Kings want a little something different.

"In Philadelphia, I was asked to focus more on defense. But with the Kings, they expect me to play a more offensive role. I'll be able to accomplish many more things with my new team," Dalembert said.

"The Kings were trying to get my services for two years and I also wanted a change," he added. "So it is a wish come true for both parties. I join a team that wanted me and it was also my will. Everything is for the best."

Is anyone else very worried about this? We traded for Dalembert's defense. We have plenty of offense. The only thing that can hurt Dalembert is if he tries to do too much--which I could very well see.

I only want him getting points off of putback's occasional oops and maybe (maybe) a pick and roll or two per game...

I wouldn't be too concerned.

Out of the possible offensive options, Dalembert will be the 5th option in offense. I doubt Westphal will utilize Dalembert in a way that will hurt the team i.e. have Dalembert in the perimeter shooting mid range Js consistently.

Most likely, Dalembert's offense will consists of garbage points, tip-ins/offensive rebounds.

I doubt seriously anyone is going to tell him "don't play defense". What this means to me is that there is a desire for him to be a more complete player while he's on the floor...not just a shot blocker. I'm fine with that. In my mind there is no such thing as too much of "plenty of" offense. The more offensive weapons you have on the floor at the same time, the more you stretch the defense and create opportunities for scoring. That's what I see going on here. Nobody is going to ask or want him to be a 1st, 2nd or even 3rd option. But if he can show some offensive prowess, especially if it is away from the basket, he's going to help pull defenders out of the paint and open the lane right up. Imagine how much damage Reke can do if any duo of Dally, Landry and Cousins are pulling their guys out 15ft from the basket to defend them...LAYUP CLINIC!

When I saw this at first, I thought they had a typo. Offense? No, just no. Put backs, alley-oops, occasional wide open jump shot. That's all you need from Samuel from an offensive stand point. I hope this doesn't become a focal point for us, we have plenty of offense for those who can score the ball.

Keep in mind this statement came from Dalembert, not the Kings. Also keep in mind that Dalembert is in a contract year, and if he plays better on offense he probably gets a bigger deal.

I'm actually not worried about this.

Dalembert's already proven he can play defense well, if he can expand his offensive game, he'll be worth more if the Kings try to trade him at the trade deadline.

Landry is our only proven post scorer so if dally can add a baby jump hook or something we could go to once and a while in the post then great but i dont expect it and i doubt that westphal does either.

You know, Daly actually does have a nice touch. He can be a semi-consistent mid-range shooter off the pick and pop if needed.

Better stats, promises of adding to his game at this age = more trade value?

Ya this is isn't surprising at all. In the offseason players need to work on their weakness' and become more all-around. Just like we want Tyreke to focus on his jumber, Landry to focus on his defense/REBOUNDING we need Dalembert to become more of an offensive thereat. Especially if he's going to be opening up the season starting at Center

Yes Dally work on these 5 things on the offensive end:

1) Set nice picks for Tyreke and the other guards.
2) If a guard passes you the ball, pas it back as its probably a "give and go".
3) If you grab an offensive rebound, dunk it!
4) Keep your body on your man so he can't get close enough to Tyreke to block his shot.
5) If you do find yourself with the ball outside the paint, pass it to a shooter.

Hows that? Can you add any more :D

Don't underrate the intentions of the Kings to keep Dalembert beyond his current contract. They've been looking at him for awhile now and I'm starting to think more and more than it doesn't have everything to do with just his contract.

Don't underestimate Thompson in his last game put up a 19/16 vs the Lakers and like Tyreke had little help last year. KMart just today has been announced at 100% from his injury last year. With Beno, a healthy Garcia, a year older Casspi and Greene, and more vet big men this year this team will have more weapons every night.

Eh I wouldn't read anything into this, Daly has always been convinced that he was a capable offensive player taking randomly horrible possessions in Phily. This is just him clinging to this belief-I'm pretty sure most of his coaches have begged him to stop trying to improvise his offense. I expect him to be the same player he was in Philly-that is an underrated defender who will take a couple "I cant believe he just did that" shots a game. I seriously doubt this in any way shape or form came from the coaches mouth.

I found this to be a good read about Dalembert's offense.

I think they figure that he should already have the defense down from his stint in Philly, and that he should expand his game to include a slightly bigger offensive role. That way he won't be somewhat of a liability on the other end. Nothing wrong with being a two-way player, right?

Dalembert averaged a double-double in 07-08. Instead of increasing his playing time by, say 15%, over the next 2 seasons inept and incompetent coaches CUT his playing time by 25%.

Last year he averaged 8 points, nearly 2 blocks and nearly 10 boards, playing 26 minutes per game. In theory he could've played 39 minutes without fouling out. Philadelphia had one of he worst defences in the Association last year.

He made 73% of his foul shots last year, has a very reliable jumper from 14 in, and, statistcally speaking, is a very good scorer off the pick-and-roll and cutting.

What did you guys think about the trade? I just realized KINGS traded Hawes and nocioni for Dalembert!!

And some people here thought Hawes was the next best thing. The Kings didn't think so..
