Is Hassan Whiteside the next "great" shotblocker?

Last night Grant and Jerry alluded to Whitesides lack of production in the D-league being an indicator of just how far away he is from contributing (without bringing up lack of PT however). They did acknowledge his shotblocking being a potential factor now though. If Whiteside develops into a player that can consistently play around 30 mpg, I think he'll be the guy that brings back those Hakeem and Mutombo like blocking numbers from back in the day. I know it's the D-league, but dudes averaging 10+ bpg per 48. That's insane.

He is a great natural shotblocker, but he has to continue developing the rest of his overall game to warrant playing time. We should have an open spot for him in the rotation next season if he is ready for a bigger role with the departure of one or more of Jackson/Dalembert/Landry. If he can put it all together he will be a very nice player and a good complement to guys like Cousins since his offensive game is based more around his jumper than his inside game.

With how this team is playing, who couldn't get into the game!?
I really hope as the season starts to wind down, and as maybe a few of the guys in front of Whiteside are possibly moved (cough, cough) he gets legit playing time. Stupid IMO to just let him rot in the D-league and the bench all year. If you're resigned to development doesn't actually focusing on DEVELOPMENT kind of go along with that? I don't know how much he's even developing in the D-league playing only 11 mpg. He should be getting that with the big team.

As long as he's a one-trick pony, he's useless.

Not completely true, and by all accounts he's no one tricker. He can face up and shoot, great compliment in theory to Cousins. Also when that one trick may possibly be the best shot blocker in the league, you can roll with that. Big time.

Come on now, Sammy has been terrific at guarding the rim this year.
Even besides that, JT and Cousins have put in quality defensive performances.

Funny. Is that why I've so often seen opposing teams get so many easy layups right at the basket all year? They don't appear especially afraid to come inside against us...

I'm watching the Bighorns right now and Whiteside needs alot of improvement still to play in the NBA. Even the commentators said he looks lost out on the court sometimes on D. He jumps on every shot and goes out too far to defend. His FT are terrible as well, 40%.

Especially when they know they could probably get a goaltend out of Sammy as often as they get their stuff swatted. Dalembert is overrated by kings fans. He's also horrible on offense, and costs the team possessions on a consistent basis.

Yeah, didn't look too comfortable out there. He also looked a little slow, I wonder if all that muscle gain has effected his quickness. Still the shotblocking potential is there. Doesn't really look like he has much of a role on that team. I can't tell if it's a) he is just way lost cause he's young, b) he's lost his quickness because of the muscle gain, or c) Eric Musselman is the coach.

I doubt it. I might be wrong, but don't you have to recall your players after a certain amount of time? Anyway, he hardly played.
