Kings will ask for extension on March 1st deadline

Post#1 » by City of Trees » Thu Feb 24, 2011 4:47 pm

With the Maloofs crunching numbers debating which city is better for their team an extension on the NBA's relocation deadline will be requested. Also hints at no resloution until after the season.

What we can assume from this? 3 things i think.

1) http://articles.ocregister.com/2011-02- ... r-tom-wood

The upshot of all of this is that months of talks between the Maloofs and Honda Center officials have intensified to the point that a final decision is expected in March. But it's also possible there might not be an announcement until April because the Kings' regular-season home schedule doesn't end until an April 13 game against the Lakers

After years of futile attempts to secure funding for a new arena to replace the outdated Arco Arena in Sacramento, the Maloofs seem genuinely interested in moving to Anaheim for several reasons: Honda Center is an NBA-ready facility with luxury suites; Samueli isn't asking for partial ownership; and the Orange County market offers better demographics, more potential corporate sponsors and a track record for supporting the NBA

The Maloofs are working hard to finalize the move and this article that was written on Feb 22nd looks to have some truth to it with news that is coming out today. If this is the case and the Maloofs wait to tell the fans their plans until all home games are played will be a slap in the face.

2) Maloofs are playing a type of Hardball that we have Never seen from them pushing Sacramento to make something happen. Filing for an extension with no plan to act on it is one hell of a move. (I hope this is the case)

3) The extension is needed because the Maloofs honestly are not ready to make a decision being this choice has potential to make or Break the Maloofs as owners in the NBA.

These are all taken from Kriedler's twitter.

# BTW, Kings extension on relocation could well run through the end of the season. The NBA doesn't really have set parameters, I'm told. 14 minutes ago via web

# None of this changes Sac situation -- no arena in sight. Mark Cuban, Phil Jackson among those saying they think team should stay in Sac. 22 minutes ago via web

# (cont.) Could be spin, of course, but my gut says Maloofs haven't heard magic words from Anaheim and that NBA is wary b/c of history there. 24 minutes ago via web

# Kings will turn modest profit this season owing to NBA-low payroll. Lost only modestly last year, contrary to reports. So sez ownership. 25 minutes ago via web

# Per Maloofs, they will not sell franchise under any circumstances and will take NO loan from Ducks owner Samueli. If they move, their dime. 27 minutes ago via web

# Kings will ask for and receive extension from the NBA to consider the Anaheim deal. Am told the league also wants time -- not sold on OC. 30 minutes ago via web

# Lots of interesting Kings/Anaheim conversations today. Tell you what I learned on the Rise Guys show tomorrow 6-10 a.m. KHTK AM-1140.

This isn't a good thing but it's not a bad thing, either.

It gives Sacramento a chance to actually SHOW Maloofs what Taylor has been working on, lets us as fans remind them who we are, and means they aren't convinced. It'll hopefully continue to scare Sacto into putting everything we can into this arena plan, and, if the arena plans aren't sound enough, then it wasn't a buisness waste for the Maloofs to wait.

Flipside, **** the NBA letting them wait it out, especially if they can wait it out till the end of the season. That's just torture, disgustingly so. And April? WTH? Whats the point of having the deadline if they can push it back so damn long?

What the hell? Take no loan? I seriously doubt that.

This to me is the most interesting part of the equation.

On one hand if there is a loan and the penalty of missing a payment is loss of the team the Maloofs would have to be insane to take it. In my opinion, with their money problems and the promise of a lockout next season, it is a virtual certainty the Maloofs lose their control of the team.

On the other hand, how can they possibly afford paying of the city of Sac, moving, and rent on the stadium in Anaheim without some sort of loan in place?

This thing just keeps getting weirder.

Saw a little bit of that KJ presser, dude sounds like a man possessed. If this fails he certainly didn't give it anything less than his best effort. Tomorrow is going to be a HUGE day. He said if the Maloofs don't give over the promised documents so ICON can do the feasibility study that it will say a lot about their intentions.

He really should be possessed. He was elected in major part to keep this team here, and he's been the city's point man on this thing. If it doesn't work out he'll take a good percentage of the blame, rightly or wrongly. He's a smart guy so he knows this better than we do.

I think this is the biggest piece of information that really is not being talked about. I think the Maloofs have not gotten a deal they would like with Anaheim and now are waiting to see what happens with Sacramento.

At this point I think the only way they can move is with a loan, there is no way they can finance 76 million dollars to pay back the city of Sacramento.

Even Bill Simmons in his NBA trade grades called out the Maloofs and why they are broke.

They stupidly invested in the Palms in the start of the depression.

I personally haven't been to Vegas in 2 years. Nor have I been to a Kings game in 2 years because of the state worker cuts of Arnie.

They are hemoraging money.

They will not sell.

Of course until their business ship is sunk.

If they stay in Sac sink faster.

If they move to Anaheim they sink a year slower.

The Maloofs are sinking either way.

They are too blind to their own mistakes and change their minds more than my 3 year old daughter.

Geoff Petrie made the Maloofs. Since the Adelman firing they have turned on his way that made them billions.

Even the last original trade of Anderson/Thorton for Landry addressed the Petrie philosophy of 2 more 35% 3 point shooters to space the floor as a team for Tyreke.

The Maloofs changed their minds and didn't want to pay for Anderson.

The Maloofs flip flop more than bacon in a frying pan than I have ever seen since 2003.

Adelman-Yes then no
Bibby-Yes then no
Mussleman-Yes then no
Coachie- Yes then no then yes then no
Artest-Yes then no
BMiller- Yes then no
Reggie-Yes then no
Petrie- Yes then no then yes then no then yes then no then yes then no then yes then no.......
Generic Utah Jerry Sloan assistant Defensive coach- Yes then no.
Kmart-Yes then no
Landry-Yes then no
Hawes- Yes then no
JT-Yes then no then yes then ???
Dalembert-Yes then no then yes???
Sacramento- Yes then ???

Who the F knows what is going to happen when the Maloofs are in charge?

Return to Sacramento Kings
